Mountain Ranch Man Celebrates Centennial

Joined by family and friends, Emil Gruna celebrated his 100^th birthday on Saturday, February 15, at a lunch at the Pickle Patch restaurant in San Andreas.  He was born on February 11, 1914, and was raised in Rosholt, Wisconsin.  World War II found him and his family moving to Southern California to support the war effort.  After his retirement from Lockheed Aviation, he was able to pursue as a hobby his talent in woodworking.  He moved to Mountain Ranch in the early 1970s and still lives in the same house.

Friends and neighbors sharing in the celebration included Marge Mobley, Jon and Janet Kramer, Carl and Johanna Scheafer, Sally Maxwell and Dean Santner, Kathy Dietrich, Lucy Burt, and Dave and Roberta Bean.  Son Jack and granddaughter Sharon of Montana and grandson Joe of New Jersey and their families were unable to attend.

Services to be held for Larry Barnes

Larry Barnes sadly passed away Tuesday March 4, 2014.
Services will be held Saturday March 15, 2014 at St Patricks in Angels Camp. 
The Rosary is at 10am and Mass at 11am.
A pot luck reception will immediately follow at the armory in Coperopolis.

State Controller Chiang Unveils Plan to Reduce State's $64.6 Billion Retiree Health Care Liability

SACRAMENTO 3-6-14 – State Controller John Chiang today released a new report showing the unfunded liability of providing health and dental benefits for state retirees under the current funding policy is $64.6 billion. The amount, known as the actuarial accrued liability, represents the present value of benefits earned as of June 30, 2013, that is expected to be paid over the lifetime of current and future retirees.

The unfunded obligation as of June 30, 2013, grew $730 million from the $63.8 billion obligation identified as of June 30, 2012. However, the accrued liability grew $2.7 billion less than expected due to fewer healthcare claims, lower-than-expected healthcare inflation, and the adoption of strategies by the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to lower health care costs.

"Although the growth was far less than projected, the State invites unnecessary risk with every day it allows to pass without a fiscally-disciplined plan for how to manage this growing liability," Chiang said. "While most are focused on unfunded pension obligations, this is a sleeper problem that can become the next big fiscal threat if we continue to do nothing."

Bret Harte Lock Down for potential gunman - area now cleared and safe

On March 6, 2014 at approximately 09:10 AM, the Angels Camp Police Department received information from the California Highway Patrol that the California Highway Patrol dispatch center had received an anonymous 911 call informing them of a possible armed person on the Bret Harte High School campus. 

School staff was notified and the campus was immediately placed on lockdown. Law Enforcement units were already on the Bret Harte Campus for the Every 15 Minutes program.

Calaveras County Science Fair

Calaveras County students in grades four through twelve, who are recommended by their school, or who have won at their school’s Science Fair, will be participating in the 29th Annual Countywide Science Fair to be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, and will be held in the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks School gymnasium at 150 Old Oak Road, San Andreas.

Judging of projects begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes an interview with the student(s) by a team of judges. Awards will be presented at the Awards Ceremony in the afternoon at approximately 2:30 pm.
Judging standards are based on creativity, scientific thought, skill, clarity, and the student’s interview. Awards will be presented to the first, second and third place winners at each grade level with a grand prize being awarded to the most outstanding project.

Local Marine veteran Jacob Koval dies in apparent DUI hit and run

YUCCA MESA— A man was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver Monday evening while riding his motorcycle on Buena Vista Drive.

Sheriff’s investigators say Jacob Andrew Koval, 27, of Yucca Valley, was riding his 2005 Suzuki westbound on Buena Vista Drive just after 5 p.m., when he was struck by a 2001 F-350 pickup truck driven by Ronald Svidergol, 69, of Yucca Valley.

Svidergol was headed eastbound and attempted to make a left turn at Surrey Court, in front of Koval, a sheriff’s investigation concluded. Investigators think Koval attempted to avoid the collision, but hit the front passenger side of Svidegol’s truck. Deputies and firefighters from station 42 in Yucca Mesa arrived to find Koval unconscious.

Earth shaking in Copper?

Over the past year there have been many reports of the "earth shaking" or the feeling of "large explosives" going off in Copperopolis.

Reports of pools sloshing, windows shaking, floors reverberating, have been documented and verified.

However, upon checking with the building department asking for explosive permit documents, talking with George Reed, checking seismic activity, etc, there remains no answer.

These events have been felt from Circle XX to the end of Little John, Poker Flat to Reeds Turnpike.

Do any residents of Copperopolis know, or have an idea, what may be causing these earth shaking events?

The most recent occurrence was at 7:25 am 3-6-14.

Local Scout Troop celebrates first Blue and Gold banquet and receives their charter

At the very first Blue and Gold banquet for the fledgling Copper Scout troop # 347 over 40 people were in attendance to celebrate 104 years of scouting, honor their scouts and support scouting.

District Executive Robin Wilson, from Stockton, spoke with the crowd and took great pleasure in seeing a growing troop in Copper and spoke of her commitment to her family through scouting, "I have 4 sons, three are Eagle Scouts and one is currently working on his project. Hopefully this time next year I will be able to say I have four Eagle Scouts."

 Following her speech, Wilson presented Cub Master Doug Oliver with the official Charter for Pack 347.

Currently the cub scout pack consists of 14 active members ranging from 1st to 4th grade. Doug Oliver and his wife Heather Oliver thoroughly enjoy what they are doing and hope more kids will join to experience the fun of scouting.

Sonora Kids' Marijuana Incident Makes International News

Sonora, CA -- The Sonora Police Department has released new details on the three Sonora Elementary students caught smoking pot. Sonora Police Chief Mark Stinson says they do not know how or where the two 8-year-olds and a 9-year-old got the pot. However, if someone gave it to them they could face charges.
"The investigation is still continuing so it will depend on what our investigation leads to, but there could be charges for contributing to the delinquency of a minor," says Chief Stinson.
When asked if the parents of the students could face legal issues, Chief Stinson replied, "It's possible."
The incident happened last Thursday morning just after 11 at the school. Police report the third graders were smoking the marijuana in a school bathroom when another student walked in. That student told school officials, who then contacted police.

Sonora PD Press release re: felony battery on an officer

4 March 2014, at approx. 10:00 am, an officer responded to St. Patrick’s Church located on Jackson Street for a report of a male subject attempting to steal a women’s purse, then refusing to leave the church after he was confronted about the attempted theft.

When the Officer arrived, he recognized the responsible party as Jeremy King, who is on parole for robbery and has an extensive violent criminal history. The Officer also knew that King had two outstanding warrants.

As the Officer went to grab King’s wrist to place him under arrest, King immediately pulled his arm away, clinched his fists, took up a fighting stance, and verbally challenged the Officer to fight. King then charged the Officer and started throwing punches at him.

Public Health Dept press release re: Tobacco Industry Continues to Market to Kids

SAN ANDREAS CA– New data released today shows that Calaveras County has more stores that sell candy, mint and liquor flavored tobacco products compared to similar counties and cities in the state.  The survey was conducted statewide from July through October 2013 at 7,300 retail stores. The survey also collected data about the availability of unhealthy food items and alcohol sold in convenience, supermarket, liquor, tobacco, small market, discount, drug and big-box stores.  Calaveras County findings from the stores surveyed include:

·         Over 83% sell the most popular brand of flavored cigarillos or little cigars

·         52% have unhealthy exterior advertising while only 9% have healthy exterior advertising

·         Alcopops or flavored alcoholic beverages are available in 100% of stores

·         Alcohol ads are placed three feet and below or near candy and toys at 74% of stores

This is the first time in California that 58 counties surveyed tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy food items together.  The results give us a picture of the challenges adults and youth face when shopping locally.

“While adult smoking rates in Calaveras County have dropped to 18.2%, we remain well above the state rate of 13.8%,” stated Dr. Kelaita, County Health Officer, “The tobacco industry continues to find new ways and new products to lure in our youth to try tobacco products,” Kelaita added.

Chaplain Niemeyer was enlisted from 1971 to 1975 and served aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN SSBN 602 as a Launch Operator Supervisor.

Is Calaveras County a Good Candidate for a Veterans Court - Calaveras Enterprise

In response to veterans facing charges that stem from mental illness and substance abuse, Veterans Treatment Courts are on the rise in California. There are currently 17 in the state.

Research has shown that the traditional Drug and Mental Health Courts do not always meet the needs of veterans. The veteran-court process helps catch the vets who may fall through judicial cracks, ensuring they receive the services they are entitled to as veterans, and it also transfers some of the financial strain of treatment from the county level to the federal level through the use of specific treatment programs offered through Veterans Affairs that address the specific criminogenic needs of the veteran.

Sonora PD press release re: vehicle vs pedestrian update

25 February 2014, at approx. 4:08 pm, emergency personnel responded to Stockton Road near Mill Villa road for a reported vehicle vs. pedestrian accident.

It was determined a 2006 Ford pick-up operated by Linda Smith, 67 of Modesto was westbound on Stockton Road, when a 33 year old male pedestrian, who was walking eastbound along the north shoulder, intentionally jumped in front of Smith’s pick-up.

The pedestrian was three feet into the traffic lane when he was struck by the right front of Smith’s truck. Smith was unable to take any evasive actions to avoid hitting the pedestrian. Several witnesses confirmed that Smith had no time to react to the pedestrian intentionally jumping out in front of her vehicle.

Angels Camp PD press release re: Mokelumne Hill Resident Arrested for Multiple Charges

On 03/03/2014 at approximately 9:20 AM, an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department conducted a traffic stop of a gray Mercury sedan on North Main Street in the Mark Twain Center for having suspended registration and the driver not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver was identified as 36 year old Mokelumne Hill resident, Joshua Ftacek. Ftacek advised the officer that he did not have a valid driver’s license and that he may have warrants from the Modesto area.

It was confirmed that Ftacek did not have a valid driver’s license and that he had a felony warrant for his arrest from Modesto, and a traffic warrant from Merced County.

Calaveras County Deputy Sheriff's Association Endorses Garrahan - press release

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Association today announced their endorsement of Pat Garrahan in the race for County Sheriff.

Pat Garrahan, a Valley Springs resident, Marine Corps veteran and retired police lieutenant, is challenging incumbent Sheriff Gary Kuntz. The Countywide election for Sheriff will be on the June 3, 2014 ballot.

“With over three decades in law enforcement, Pat has the leadership experience necessary to deal with the issues facing our department and the needs of the community,” said DSA President Brian Baker. “He understands the challenges ahead and brings a new perspective to the county.”

The Calaveras County Deputy Sheriff’s Association represents 48 members of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

Sierra Rep to host special Les Misérables brunch

Sierra Repertory Theatre continues to celebrate the start of its 35^th Anniversary season with its first-ever Directors Brunch.

The brunch, set for April 6 at the Black Oak Casino Resort Hotel banquet room, is designed to give audience members an idea of how SRT went about staging Les Miz, one of the biggest productions the theatre has undertaken so far. Forest Officials want your input on off road trails

Sonora, CA -- If you ride off-road vehicles, forest officials want to hear from you. Your comments are needed to help Stanislaus National Forest complete the preliminary 2015 off-highway vehicle grant applications for consideration by state park and recreation officials.
Forest Spokesperson Rebecca Garcia says, "It's what the public wants to see out there on the trails. We compile all the comments. We see what the public wants on the ground, and what they want the grant monies to be used for. Usually they try to go with themes to see where they can group this information together."

LAFCO discusses special district's spheres of influence - 'consolidation' the new buzz word for 2014

At the 2-24-14 LAFCO meeting, discussions centered on the various special districts spheres of influence.

A sphere of influence is the geographical area of responsibility per district.

The only spheres that remain the same and relatively untouched with time are the Veterans Districts and the Cemetery Districts.

Bert Sobon, City member on LAFCO,  made the presentation regarding special districts and their areas of responsibility. Many districts have come under scrutiny, most problematic are the CSA's and the CSD's" said Sobon. Suggesting a conversion to permanent road divisions or consolidation. GOing further to state that "all 5 CSA's are in trouble" in Calaveras County.

Water, Parks, and Wildlife Committee Vice Chair Bigelow Responds to Governor’s Signing of Drought Legislation

 

SACRAMENTO – Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee Vice Chair Frank Bigelow, R-O’Neals, today issued the following statement in response to Governor Brown signing drought legislation approved this week by the Legislature:

 

“I appreciate that the Legislature, and now the Governor through his signature today, have taken swift action to bring some relief to Californians who have been hit hardest by the drought.  In my district, farmers are struggling to make ends meet, many ag workers have lost their jobs, and small business owners – especially the hotels, restaurants and shops that rely on tourism – have lost income as a result of the drought.

 

 

High School Artists Featured in annual Show at Calaveras Arts Council

ArtSpirit, the 17th annual High School Juried Exhibition will open in Calaveras Arts Council’s Gallery Calaveras on Saturday, March 15.  Student artists are from Calaveras, Bret Harte and Mountain Oaks high schools.  A public reception will be held on Saturday, March 15 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. in the gallery.  The gallery is located at 22 Main, San Andreas.  First, second and third place judging results will be announced at 2:00 pm.

Cash awards will be presented to first and second place winners; ribbons for third place, in each of 12 categories. These include Black and White Photography, Color Photography, Digital/Computer Art, Oil or Acrylic Painting, Watercolor Painting, Pastels, Drawing/Illustration, Functional Ceramics, Sculpture, Printmaking, Other/Mixed Media, and Crafts.

Since March has been designated both nationally and statewide as Arts Education Month, this ArtSpirit exhibit is meant to call attention to the importance of having an education steeped in the arts. The exhibit provides the public with the rare opportunity to observe and purchase art created by the county’s many very talented teens.  Last year hundreds of students entered over 200 works. 

Calaveras Taxpayers Association hands out Constitution booklets to Supervisors

In an attempt to help public officials better understand the United States Constitution, the Calaveras County Taxpayers Association (CCTA) purchased hundreds of Constitution booklets to distribute to county and local officials, as well as school board members and some youth.

At the February 25, 2014 Board of Supervisors meeting, Al Segala, President of the CCTA handed out Constitution booklets to each of the Supervisors, the County Administrative Officer and County Council.

Supervisors Wright and Spellman began looking through their copies immediately. Supervisor Cliff Edson thanked Segala, "These are great booklets, Al."

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding

1,062,486 acre-feet of water.  The lake level rose a bit this week and is currently at 951 ft. above sea level and 135 ft. from full.  The water is very clear in some areas and slightly stained in others, with a little bit of debris on the surface.  The average water temperature is 53-56 degrees with some areas reaching 57-58 degrees on warm sunny days.  The boat launch ramps at Tuttletown and Glory Hole Point are both open.

Governor Brown Signs Drought Legislation

SACRAMENTO – As California grapples with the driest period in its history, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today signed legislation to assist drought-affected communities and provide funding to better use local water supplies.

“Legislators across the aisle have now voted to help hard-pressed communities that face water shortages,” said Governor Brown. “This legislation marks a crucial step – but Californians must continue to take every action possible to conserve water.”

On This Day in History - Dr. Suess was born

On this day March 2nd, in 1904, Theodor Geisel, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss, the author and illustrator of such beloved children's books as "The Cat in the Hat" and "Green Eggs and Ham," is born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Geisel, who used his middle name (which was also his mother's maiden name) as his pen name, wrote 48 books--including some for adults--that have sold well over 200 million copies and been translated into multiple languages. Dr. Seuss books are known for their whimsical rhymes and quirky characters, which have names like the Lorax and the Sneetches and live in places like Hooterville.

Geisel, who was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts, graduated from Dartmouth College, where he was editor of the school's humor magazine, and studied at Oxford University. There he met Helen Palmer, his first wife and the person who encouraged him to become a professional illustrator. Back in America, Geisel worked as a cartoonist for a variety of magazines and in advertising.

You can purchase any ticket from one of our youth that are going to camp. The proceeds will go to our mission trip to Mexico and our youth going to Hume Lake Christian Camp.
