Bark n Bubbles Grand Opening - bubbles of fun

Saturday August 27, 2011 was the Grand Opening for the new self service dog wash Bark n Bubbles, located in Lake Tulloch Plaza by IGA.

Doggies of all sorts brought their owners to visit the new shop to get a good wash or just to shop for new toys.

One family's four-legged friend was treated to a family scrub down with mother and son pulling double duty with the bubbles and the scrubbing. The mom said it was so much nicer than putting her dog in the tub at home. Not hard on the back at all and fun for her young son.

New Look for Calaveras County Sheriff Dept vehicles

In an effort to transition the Sheriff’s Office into a new era, Sheriff Gary Kuntz has begun to change the appearance of the patrol vehicles. The old style green graphics has made way to a new design that features discreet black and gold coloring while including the necessary key features in sheriff vehicle recognition. The new design not only matches the colors of the Sheriff’s Office, but was formulated through team effort and input from the patrol deputies to match the look and feel of the newly refocused Sheriff’s Office. "Community First" was a promise that Sheriff Kuntz made to the citizens of Calaveras County and each vehicle bearing the new graphic design will have this slogan on the rear of the vehicle as a reminder that the communities and the people of Calaveras County have the highest priority. In order to be fiscally responsible, the Sheriff’s Office will only be putting the new graphics on new vehicles as they are replaced. Gateway Press Inc., located in Murphys, worked with the Sheriff’s Office in formulating the new graphic and was able to respond with the expertise and ability to meet the requirements for the new sheriff vehicle signage, as well as completing installations at a cost savings from previous installs. This full service print and graphic shop specializes in digital printing, vehicle graphics, and more. "I believe in using local vendors whenever possible," Sheriff Kuntz said, "Gateway did a great job."

Spellman Still Working on County Noise Ordinance

Together with Supervisor Wilensky, Copperopolis resident Jack Cox, County Counsel Janice Elliot, Supervisor Darren Spellman has been working on a noise ordinance plan for Calaveras County.

"One size fits all does not work" said Spellman, pointing out that what may work in West Point may not work on Lake Tulloch, the county will need "site specific policies."

Spellman said that as soon as the County Planning Director gets a handle on the general plan and the plan is pushed through with what is required by the state to become compliant, then a generic noise ordinance can be put in place with site specific community plans including their own noise ordinances.

Generic noise ordinances usually include policies that require no loud noises after 10 pm Sunday through Thursday and after midnight Friday and Saturday.

On this day in History - Thurgood Marshall becomes first African American Confirmed as Supreme Court Justice 1967

On this day August 30, 1967, Thurgood Marshall becomes the first African American to be confirmed as a Supreme Court justice. He would remain on the Supreme Court for 24 years before retiring for health reasons, leaving a legacy of upholding the rights of the individual as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
From a young age, Marshall seemed destined for a place in the American justice system. His parents instilled in him an appreciation for the Constitution, a feeling that was reinforced by his schoolteachers, who forced him to read the document as punishment for his misbehavior. After graduating from Lincoln University in 1930, Marshall sought admission to the University of Maryland School of Law, but was turned away because of the school's segregation policy, which effectively forbade blacks from studying with whites. Instead, Marshall attended Howard University Law School, from which he graduated magna cum laude in 1933. (Marshall later successfully sued Maryland School of Law for their unfair admissions policy.)

Recall is a Go – Interview with Michael McDaniel

In a telephone interview 8-29-11, Michael McDaniel, the driving force behind the  Supervisor Spellman recall effort, stated that the recall has been “approved and on the move.”
According to McDaniel, Calaveras County “has approved our petition and verbiage and have given us the green light to start collecting signatures.”
McDaniel and recall supporters have until November 28, 2011 to collect 1702 valid signatures of registered voter residents within the previous District 5. “Our goal is to collect 2000” said McDaniels, hoping to offset the possible invalid signature potential, saying that supporters of the recall don’t want anything “to hamper the recall” effort.
When asked when signature collection would begin, McDaniels stated, “Signatures will begin to be collected by the end of this week.” He also asked for those who wished to become involved to contact him at 981-7200.
In an earlier interview with Supervisor Spellman, Spellman felt that the recall effort was hampering his effectiveness as a Supervisor, stating, “There are so many things I am working on, it (the recall effort) takes away from my ability to be as effective as I could be.” He also asked that voters contact him with any questions and wishing to dispel rumors, he says, “talk to me.”
Spellman can be reached via email at  dspellman@co.calaveras.ca.us

Veteran Stand Down in Sonora September 23-24, 2011, 8-5

STAND DOWN 09/23 – 09/24, 0800 to 1700 (8:00am to 5:00pm).  The attendees will not be required to stay the night.

Target population is Military Veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.  We are being kind of loose on our definition of homeless. We want to encourage those at risk Veterans to attend.

We will be providing free medical and dental checkups.  The dental services will include extractions, cleaning, and fillings.  Medical checks will be for vitals screenings and referrals to higher level of medical care if needed.  We are working on getting a Vision Van there too.

We will provide Veteran attendees free meals, clothing, haircuts, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, track phones & minutes for track phone (for the first 20 Veterans who arrive), gas cards (for the first 20 Veterans),  & transportation to the event for the Veteran participants.

What we would greatly appreciate from our community partners is:

Assistance with identifying those Veterans who are homeless or at risk of being homeless.
Inform those Veterans of this event.
Instruct the identified Veterans to bring their DD 214 papers (discharge papers).  If necessary we can assist them with acquiring copies of their DD-214 papers prior to the Stand Down.  The more advance notice we have for this the better chances we have of getting the papers back in time.
Identify which Veterans are in need of transportation and provide the Outreach team with this information as far in advance as possible so we can make arrangements.

Thanks so much for your willingness to support our Veterans.  If you have any questions please contact me at 209-588-2604.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,
A friend sent this to me his morning . . . I never saw this report even though I watch Fox news.

This took place this past Fourth of July 2011.

All of the major news media groups were invited . . .

Not a word from CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC etc. They never said a word.

Whatever is said about President Bush . . .

The troops recognized him as the Commander in Chief then and now and this explains why;

"The package proposed by the Governor will make California more competitive with other states and provide a foundation upon which we can rebuild California's job base,” said Joe Panetta, President and CEO, BIOCOM, “Governor Brown is to be commended for putting the strength of his office into these efforts.”

Boeing
“As a company with several major manufacturing sites in this state, Boeing applauds the governor’s initiative to support manufacturing in California,” said Jeff Sweet, Director of California Government Relations for The Boeing Company. “He understands the need for consistency and certainty to spur investment and job growth, and is seeking solutions that will help accomplish that goal.”

Governor Brown Proposes California Jobs First Package to Spur Local Job Creation

Taking action to put Californians to work, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today proposed a three-part California Jobs First plan that offers over $1 billion a year in tax relief for businesses that create jobs in the state.

“Boosting job growth in California is a top priority, and this proposal is a critical step in making sure the state does everything it can to support local job creation,” said Brown. “Our state has added 116,000 jobs since January, but we must do more to build economic momentum. This legislation would expand a currently existing job credit to make it more effective while adding new tax incentives for growth in the manufacturing sector.”

Thirty-four counties in California were identified to participate in this offer. “The state prevalence rate for adults is currently 11.9 %,” stated Dr. Dean Kelaita, Health Officer.  “Calaveras County’s rate is well above that at 18%,” added Kelaita.  While there has been progress in decreasing the number of adults who smoke, Calaveras County continues to lag behind the state.  The result is a continuing concern for the smoker’s health and for the health of the community at risk of second and third hand smoke exposures.

Letter from Congressman Dan Lungren

This month, I have hosted three Town Halls in the district and visited with nearly 20 business and community groups to listen to their ideas about getting this country back on its feet and back to work, and update them on what’s going on in Congress.
I point this out because media personalities such as Greta Van Susteren at Fox have suggested that Congress should have cut short its “vacation,” and returned to Washington D.C. to solve some problems.
I beg to disagree on a couple of levels.

Copperopolis WWII Vet to take Honor Flight to D.C. by, John Howsden

Shortly after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Mel Ogg kissed his girlfriend good-by, walked into the nearest Marine Corps recruiting office and said he wanted to fight for his country. After some no-nonsense training at boot camp he was put on a cargo ship headed for the South Pacific. The young farm boy was about to become a combat veteran the hard way—fighting.

The above sentence makes going to war sound easy and exciting.  But World War II was among one of the most heinous human crimes in history. Before it was over, 16 million Americans went off to war and of those, over 400,000 didn’t come back.

Copperopolis, Where a Hero calls Home

There may not have been a ticker tape parade down Main Street upon his return, but Tech Sgt Tavis DeLaney, returning from Afghanistan, was "blown away" by the incredible support and love he felt from the community saying, “this community has touched my heart.”

"I didn't know anyone here, I really kept to myself, never had time to make friends, so when I came home and found myself the recipient of a great coming home party at Griff's, a welcome home sign on my garage door and applause at my church followed by hugs, I knew I had found my home."

Not believing himself to be a hero, Tavis underplays his role in the four tours he has completed, three in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. He currently holds a Bronze Star and has recently been nominated for a Silver Star. While some may wonder, misguidedly so, at his many tours, he holds true to four rules: patriotism, honor, courage and sacrifice.
Tavis's most recent nomination for the Silver Star stemmed from a 7 hour fire fight in the Hindu Kush mountains near the village of  DoAb  in Nuristan Province , Afghanistan, with a team of 40 US and 20 Afghan soldiers against an estimated 400 to 500 insurgents hiding in the cavernous mountain range “it was like a battleship in the mountain…the hill was crawling with insurgents.”

On this day in History - Mount Vesuvias Erupts 79 AD devastating Pompeii

After centuries of dormancy, Mount Vesuvius erupts in southern Italy, devastating the prosperous Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and killing thousands. The cities, buried under a thick layer of volcanic material and mud, were never rebuilt and largely forgotten in the course of history. In the 18th century, Pompeii and Herculaneum were rediscovered and excavated, providing an unprecedented archaeological record of the everyday life of an ancient civilization, startlingly preserved in sudden death.

Governor Brown Creates California Interagency Council on Veterans

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued an Executive Order establishing the California Interagency Council on Veterans to improve how veterans’ services are coordinated across local, state and federal government.

“The California Interagency Council on Veterans gives everyone a seat at the table and ensures we’re working collaboratively to address the needs of the 30,000 servicemen and women who return to California each year,” Brown said. “We owe our veterans the best and when they come home, we must serve them the same way they so bravely served us.”

Governor Brown announces appointments

Jeanne Clinton, 60, of Berkeley, has been appointed special advisor to the California Public Utilities Commission. Clinton has been a manager of the Climate Strategies Branch of the Commission since 2009. She was an advisor on clean energy and policy planning to the Commission from 2006 to 2009 and a consultant to former California Energy Commissioner Jackalyne Pfannenstiel from 2005 to 2006. Clinton served as an international energy efficiency advisor for the Vietnam Ministry of Industry from 2004 to 2005 and deputy director for the California Consumer Power and Conservation Financing Authority from 2001 to 2004. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $130,236. Clinton is a Democrat.

New Melones Fishing Report

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 2,180,884 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped two feet this week and is currently at 1068 ft. above sea level and 20 ft. from full. Water temperature is 80-83 degrees. Water is green-stained (lots of plankton) with strong mud lines near shore. Watch for floating debris and unmarked island tops.

Trout: The bite is starting to pick up. Fishing at night under a submersible light can be a great way to some nice holdover trout. We have a selection of submersible night-fishing drop lights at Glory Hole Sports. The light attracts plankton, which attracts the baitfish, which attracts the rainbows and brown trout. Drop a nightcrawler/Power Bait combo or a live minnow under the light. Allow an hour or two for the baitfish to come around the light- then the action starts! Also use a vertical jigging spoon below the light to draw a reaction strike. If you wish to troll for trout, fish 50-60 feet deep over the deepest water in the main lake or creek channels with shad-patterned lures such as Excel, Apex, Needlefish, or Rapala Countdowns, and use Bang or ProCure threadfin shad scent on your lures. If you are in the mood for a beautiful boat ride, head upriver and still-fish under the logjam. Bank anglers should head to local creeks like Angels Creek, although we have the occasional trout caught by bank anglers in Angels Cove. William Heinle of Arnold, George Lindsey of Murphys, and Ben Baier and John Glick of Sonora all brought in nice limits of trout this week.

Senators Gaines and Hernandez's Hospital Cost Transparency Bill On Its Way To Governor

Senator Ted Gaines (R-Roseville) and Senator Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina) today announced that their bill – Senate Bill 751 – has cleared both the Assembly and Senate with bipartisan support and is now on its way to Governor Brown.

Senate Bill 751 is a straightforward measure that will give California consumers access to cost and quality information regarding hospitals in their communities. Consumers will be able to use this valuable information to determine which hospital will provide the best care for their ailment.

Copper Fire Implements Cutting Edge Paramedic Technology

In the world of paperless data input and export, real time communication and data storage, CFPD has the corner on the market.
Paramedic/Medic Training instructor Kelly Zook has been with Copperopolis Fire Protection District as a per diem Paramedic since February 2008 and licensed since 2005. Beginning August 2010 he has been in charge of the EMT aspects within CFPD. Frustrated with the budget constraints put upon smaller Districts but desiring a “quality program” to run within CFPD, he was told about a new program called iPCR, an electronic patient care reporting system for iPad from Forte Holdings Company.
In early January 2011, after contacting persons within Forte Holdings and telling them of the budget limits and needs of the District,  Zook was contacted by the CEO, Dion Nugent, and was told to “come on in..we will walk you through our program and we will work on the other details for you.” Zook said that over the following eight months “we worked together in order to come together and get our District Patient Care Reporting program I am very proud of.”
To offset the budget concerns, CFPD has been designated as a test site for this product. In being designated as such, CFPD is to give input and feedback suggesting changes or modifications. Zook is to attend quarterly meetings with the corporation focusing on improving the iPCR for our District and other Districts. Others in attendance at these meeting will be EMS Directors from other Fire Departments and EMS Agencies that are currently using the product.

The investigation included the undercover purchase of the substances in question; the testing of the substances in question by the California Department of Justice Lab to confirm the products did in fact contain a controlled substance; contacting and notifying the business owner of the health and legal actions if he continued to sale the salts and spices.
