Electronis Waste Recycling Event

The CHS Earth Club would like to invite you to get rid of your old, broken electronics to be recycled! This event will take place on Saturday June 1 from 9am - 1pm in the lower parking lot of Calaveras High school. E-Waste contains a variety of toxins which leech into the environment when thrown into landfills and not properly disposed of. Please bring the items to CHS to be recycled. This event offers you an easy way to recycle any electronic device that is not useful or is no longer working. Such items include televisions, computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, radios, record players, tape players, CD players, DVD players, telephones (landlines and cell), answering machines, copiers. Pretty much anything electronic! Items NOT able to be recycled are batteries, smoke detectors, x-ray equipment, fluorescent lights and ballasts. All you need to do is bring your e-waste items to Calaveras High School on June 1 and drop them off, no cost to you. Onsite Electronics Recycling will be gathering the e-waste and hauling it off. Please take advantage of this local, convenient event in San Andreas to help ensure electronics are recycled and not tossed into our landfills. The members of the Calaveras High Earth Club would like to thank the community members for continuing efforts to recycle not only electronics but also glass, plastic, aluminum and plastic bags.

Ladies Auxliary Community Potluck a tasty treat

On May 27, 2013 after the Flag Raising Ceremony performed by the VFW Post 12118 held at the Copperopolis Cemetery the Ladies Auxiliary invited the community to a potluck at Blackcreek Park.

The event was not only to create a community atmosphere on Memorial Day but to introduce the community to the Ladies Auxiliary and let them know of their presence.

Approximately 50 to 70 people were served a veritable smorgasbord of chicken, ham, deviled eggs, tossed salad, macaroni salad, brussel sprouts, garlic bread, cake, cookies, fresh fruit, spaghetti, pasta, and much more. Not a single person left hungry.

Chairman of the event and treasurer Shirley Burke expressed great thanks to all the volunteers who helped and the community that came out to support them.

Copperopolis Honors Our Heros on Memorial Day

A small crowd gathered in Copperopolis Cemetery on Memorial Day 2013 to commemorate the day with a flag-raising and wreath laying ceremony. While many chose to join the group, some preferred the solitude of the cemetery to pay their respects to those they had lost – to honor their memory silently.

The James D Piper VFW Post 12118 hosts the yearly event for the community with participation from the VFW Post 12118 Ladies Auxiliary and the Copper Hills 4H.

After a short welcome speech by Commander Al Gilbert the ceremony commenced with respectful silence as VFW Officers slowly raised the flag. Military personnel representing WWII, Korea, and Vietnam were present and accounted for in pressed shirts and crisp covers. The salute taught to them in their youth still fresh in their minds as they proudly saluted their American flag, the same flag they had fought for, the same flag some of their friends had died for.

Copperopolis Museum Open June 1, 2013

The Copperopolis Historical museum is only open to the public one day per year at their annual Homecoming Celebration... that means this Saturday folks!

Upon entering the museum one feels as if they have stepped back through time. The smell is of metal, dust and old leather is a heady scent. The first sight is of a glorious carriage circa late 1800's. Past the carriage is a part of history some people living here still remember today. It is the original post office boxes. The Post Office was located in what is now the gift store of the Union Mine Store. If you are lucky enough to meet up with local town historian elect Ed Gouzenne he may just show you his P.O. box. He can't remember the combination, but there is no need.

Just a few short steps away there is a miniature replica of the older Copper mines. In working order. Past the 'to scale' Copper mine lay equipment of all sorts. From obvious mining helmets, to tools rusted and dulled by use and time that makes one wonder how it was indeed used. The lunch pail used by the miners is creative in its use, the lid is actually the bowl.

Along with the tools was a modern convenience, the telephone.
If you make it to the 2013 Copperopolis Homecoming you won't want to miss the museum. There is more to learn and see than what is written here.

Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks opens Friday, May 31 at Sierra Repertory Theater

Dance partners shine in razor-sharp comedy

When dance teacher Michael Minetti first meets his elderly student Lily Harrison in her Florida-coast high rise, it seems pretty clear these two will barely make it past ‘Hello,’ let alone their first full lesson. Besides their 30-year age difference, they clash at every turn. A former teacher and minister’s wife, she’s guarded, uptight and suspicious. A former Broadway dancer, he blurts out jokes and insults and swings from glib to desperate to nonchalant in 10 seconds flat. It’s fun to watch, but how will they make it through a six-week dance course? That’s the hilarious and touching journey that unfolds in Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, a new comedy that opens at Sierra Rep’s East Sonora Theatre stage May 31.
