Since late October Lucas has been volunteering at the Copper library every Wednesday to help with whatever was needed. He has hosted two kids movie nights and helped out with shelving of books and movies and used a lot of organizational skills and muscle in the recent big move to a new location.
To date Lucas has volunteered almost 75 hours to the library. "It's rewarding. I really enjoyed movie night; something for the kids in the community to do."
Since Bret Harte has implemented a new program for seniors where they don;t need to attend school each day Lucas is on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday schedule at school. So with that said he felt the most difficult part of the project was actually waking up and working on one of his days off. "But it was worth it. I learned responsibility."
Valerie Shimkus, his mentor, said that Lucas has learned a lot about organization and responsibility. "He is awesome. Even when he wasn't feeling all that well he would still be here and help. He was responsible and motivated."
Lucas's favorite subject is science and he hopes to go into a career as an x-ray tech or dental assistant "something in the sciences."
