On
August 7, 2012 the Angels Camp Police Department arrested Samual
Steele, 39 of Angels Camp for Manslaughter in the death of Michael
Elliott.
During
the course of the investigation police learned that Elliott and Steele
had been drinking together at Claussen’s Corner Bar on the night of July
23, 2012. While the two men were inside the bar they were involved in a
verbal altercation. The verbal altercation continued just before
midnight outside of the bar ultimately escalating to a physical
confrontation near the 1200 block of S Main St. During the physical
confrontation Elliott was pushed to the ground by Steele which caused
him to sustain a head injury.

Following
the physical confrontation, Steele who was aware Elliott had sustained a
head injury moved him inside of an apartment complex nearby. It was
during this time that an Angels Camp Police Officer was flagged down and
made aware of the incident. Medical assistance was summoned for
Elliott due to his injuries.
Elliott
was transported to Mark Twain St, Joseph’s Hospital by ambulance, and
later by air ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center where he later
succumbed to his injuries and died on July 28, 2012.
