Saddle Creek Garden Club Garden Tour raises money for Copper Elementary beautification

The Saddle Creek Garden Club held their second annual Garden Tour on June 2, 2012 to raise funds for the beautification of Copperopolis Elementary school.

Five families shared their beaitiful gardens for this great cause: Tom & Lynne Gilmore, Joe & Ginny Engler, Jon & Joni Slezak, Kent & Mary Ellen Lazarus, and Rod & Jeannie McWhinney.

Some used designers, others used their own vision. While grounds maintenance services are readily available Joe Engler says he much prefers to maintain as much of the grounds as possible by himself. "I spend more time in my garden than on the course." He said with a wry smile. It was evident in the beauty that surrounded him.  The Lazarus family utilized the natural shale and slate rock outcroppings to create a dramatic yet elegant garden setting that wrapped their home in the natural beauty of the area.

The intention of the beautification is two-fold. First the clearing of nasty weeds filled with stickers and painful goat-heads along with the planting of drought resistant and native plants along the small front slope where the bus loading zone is located, to slow erosion and create a calming, beautiful atmosphere for the children.

Currently the club is in need of donated soil, mulch and donated services of a professional landscape designer to help them with the various phases of the project currently in its preliminary design stage. If you would like to donate your expertise, your time, or funds, to their cause or wish for more information please contact Bette Saylor, Treasurer, 785-5651, bettesaylor@caltel.com.
