According to amateur historians about the town of Copperopolis the beginnings of our Homecoming celebration date back quite a few years.
In the 'old' days when the ranchers kids would come home for the summer they would all get together and have a big BBQ at the Armory, calling it a homecoming BBQ.
As the years passed, Charlie Stone - town historian - was heard to say (with a bit of humor) that the ranchers got tired of hearing the same old stories told over and over again so started to invite some of the flatlanders to their BBQ. Next thing you know they were inviting folks from Poker Flat and other areas of town as it became populated.
The new, modern Homecoming celebration includes a pancake breakfast, music, parade, quilts, vendors, and more.
Thanks to the Copperopolis Community Center the tradition of Homecoming lives on.
