Jon
Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA),
will discuss current efforts to increase taxes and how to promote lower
taxes and regulation, at a Calaveras County Taxpayers Association
Luncheon on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, 12 to 2 PM. The event will be held
at the Historic Murphys Hotel in Murphys.
Coupal,
an attorney who successfully argued the term limits Proposition 140
before the California Supreme Court, has been HJTA president since
1999. Prior to that he served as the organization’s Director of Legal
Affairs. He was the principal author of Proposition 218, the Right to
Vote on Taxes Act, which was approved by voters in 1996.
HJTA
is a statewide organization founded by Proposition 13 coauthor, Howard
Jarvis. Its mission is the protection of Proposition 13 and the
advancements of taxpayers’ rights. The Association takes an active role
in state tax policy, and was instrumental in the defeat of Proposition
88, which would have allowed the state to impose a state-wide property
tax. Recently, the HJTA has been networking with Tea Party and other
groups in the interest of protecting taxpayers. This was expressed by
the sponsorship of two annual Taxpayer/Tea Party Summits in Sacramento.
The below photo was taken at the Summit held on April 17, 2012, at which 5 Calaveras County Taxpayers attended.
Other
speakers planned for the event are Leslie Davis, Assessor and Tonja
Dausend, author, with a presentation of her booklet “Undermining Freedom
in Calaveras County”.
Seating is limited. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
On- line reservations are available until June 25, 2012 at the CCTA website: CalaverasTaxpayers.org. or, call 785-1491
