Sonora PD press release re: Stolen Vehicle Arrest
20 February 2013, at approx. 1:48 pm, a subject called the Sonora Police Department from the 100 block of Linoberg and reported that someone had just drove off from his residence, pulling his trailer, which had been locked up at his residence.
An Officer in the area observed the stolen trailer being towed by a 2006 Chevy Tahoe. The Officer stopped the vehicle and contacted the driver, who he recognized from prior contacts as Danny McLaughlin, 35 of Sonora. A warrants check on McLaughlin showed he had three active “No Bail” warrants for his arrest, all of which were drug related.

Copperopolis Gun Range comes under fire

Steve Nelson of Calaveras Tactical has had to close the
doors to his business in the foothills due to a complaint filed with the
Calaveras County Code Compliance Unit.
Nelson has been a NRA firearms instructor, safety instructor
and DOJ (Department of Justice) Instructor since 2006. Added to that expertise
Nelson served as a medic with the USMC beginning in ’91, has trained as a SWAT
Paramedic and is currently a Captain firefighter/paramedic with 25 years experience
in the field.
Nelson began Calaveras Tactical to teach gun safety and use,
from rifles to pistols, from beginner to advanced. Operating as a mobile
business utilizing “multiple privileges at multiple gun ranges from the
foothills to the Bay Area” helped Nelson educate more people on safety, laws,
use and more.
When operating in Copperopolis Nelson utilized a private 70
acre gun range. “The closest habitable structure was ½ mile away according to
the planning department.” Which falls within the California Penal Code section
12001.2(b) requiring that no person shall discharge any firearm within one
hundred fifty yards of any occupied dwelling, house, residence, or other
building or any barn or other outbuilding used in connection therewith.

CHP OFFICERS’ HEROIC EFFORTS RECOGNIZED AT A CEREMONY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Two veteran California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers were honored
with the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor in Washington, D. C. earlier today. The award,
which is the highest national award for valor by a law enforcement officer or firefighter, was
presented to CHP Officers Sean Haller and Rafael Rivera for their heroic actions during a
February 2010 shooting in the Fresno County town of Minkler.
Presenting the prestigious award to the 18 recipients was Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney
General Eric Holder. Each of the honorees exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal
safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life. Including today’s awardees, 78 medals have
been presented since the first recipients were honored in 2003.

LA Times to Cover one of our own
Ric Ryan, known as the walking man of Murphys, will receive greater coverage this weekend for his efforts to raise funds for Operation Mend as the LA Times will be here to walk and talk with him.
Ric, a Vietnam Veteran, has had many stories written about his efforts to raise funds for the joint UCLA and Brown Medical Center venture called Operation Mend. When a veteran is wounded, causing disfiguration or loss of limbs, after they have received care from the government, Operation Mend takes it a step further by offering plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery, prosthetics and more, all at no cost to the wounded vet or their family. They give hope back to the vets and their families.
To date Ric, with the help of our foothill communities, has raised almost $20,000 for Operation Mend.

Marine Corporal Aaron P. Mankin
was Operation Mend's first patient in August 2007. He is currently
living in Texas and has two beautiful children. On May 11th, 2005, he
was wounded when the 26-ton amphibious assault vehicle he was traveling
in rolled over an improvised explosive device and was propelled 10 feet
in the air. Four Marines died in the attack and 11 others were injured. In addition to the damage sustained to his throat and lungs from smoke inhalation, Cpl. Mankin suffered intense burns on over 25 percent of his body. His ears, nose and mouth were essentially gone and he lost two fingers on his right hand. |

State Controller updates pay site with more local figures
Today State Controller John Chiang launched an updated website
showing compensation for public employees across California. The site – publicpay.ca.gov
– offers maps, search functions, and custom report-building tools. It
also allows users to download raw data for their own research. Today's
update includes 2011 wage data from various local "special districts,"
including Land Reclamation, Levee, Hospital, Water, Police, Fire,
Transit, Transportation Planning, and Waste districts.

The Copperopolis Community Food Pantry will be
doing distributions from the Lake Tulloch Bible Church, 3566 Spangler Lane, Copperopolis,
on the third Thursday of each month starting February 21 from 1-4
pm. The Copper Closet clothing will be set up outside. People should
park on the north side of the church so they do not block any of the
neighboring businesses. Since this is our first time in the new location we
request no early birds as the volunteers will need some extra time to set
up.
We are very grateful for the help we are receiving
from Kevin Young and his staff at Payless IGA and Pastor Ted from Lake Tulloch
Bible Church.

Soroptimist International of Calaveras County (SICC) will
again offer free Take Women to Heart lipid panel screenings to Calaveras County
women during the months of April and May 2013.
Heart attack and stroke are the No. 1 killers of women in
the United States. For women, the odds
of dying due to heart disease, heart attack, or stroke are significantly higher
than dying of cancer. SICC has enjoyed
an on-going partnership on this project with Mark Twain Medical Center since
2006.

CalPers votes to sell Smith & Wesson Shares
As of December 31, 2013 CAlPers, the largest US pension fund with almost 255 billion, had approximately 197,000 shares of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp and 117,000 shares of Sturm Ruger &Co.
The CalPers Board voted today to divest $5 million of their shares in the two companies citing the fact that some of the weapons made by the companies are illegal in the state of California.The vote was 9-3 with many of the ayes citing the Sandy Hook incident and one of the Nays expressing concern with the premise that selling stocks of items illegal in California will start an avalanche of knee jerk sales of stocks pointing to the investment in automobiles that don't meet clean air standards in California and gasoline not available in California. It is also believed that CalPers invests in pharmaceuticals companies as well as liquor and wine companies.

Valerie Dean-Shimkus ~ the passion behind the books
Many in town may know of Valerie - our town librarian - but many more may not know that she is the original librarian for Copperopolis. Though she is referred to as a branch attendant (because librarians have a masters degree) we still call her our librarian.
In 1998 Copperopolis was growing in leaps and bounds and some folks in our town made it clear that we too deserved a library. Soon thereafter a library was forthcoming. A small little office type library located in Cosmic Court with Valerie at the helm. Locating the library was not easy except for the fact that there was an aged oak tree in the parking lot that was estimated to be well over 100, pushing 200 years old which helped with directions. Within a few years, the tree long since gone much to the dismay of the community, the library found a new home by Primo's Pizzeria. Valerie moved right along with it.

Copperopolis Community Plan Advisory Committee taking a hiatus
The Copperopolis Community Plan Advisory Committee (CCPAC) completed its
assigned tasks and will postpone its monthly meeting schedule until
further notice. District 4 Supervisor Debbie Ponte will conduct a
community outreach program to inform and garner input from community
residents on the Committee’s work. Additional information regarding the
outreach effort will be posted on this website soon. If you have

Gov issues Proclamation
On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive
Order 9066 which set in motion the forced evacuation and incarceration
of many thousands of loyal United States citizens solely by reason of
their Japanese ancestry.
That thousands of Japanese American citizens were wrongfully interned in American concentration camps without charge and without a fair hearing continues to trouble the conscience of this Nation. The internment of Japanese Americans should serve as a powerful reminder that in defending this Nation and its ideals, we must do so as faithfully in the courtrooms and the public squares of this country as upon the battlefields.

Sheriff Dept Press release re: encouraging drivers to limit their travels to essential only travel during winter weather
Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center is receiving reports
of several snow related incidents involving vehicles off the roadway Hwy
49 near Rawhide in Tuolumne County, Hwy 4 three miles west of Angels
Camp, and Hwy 4 east up the Utica grade towards Arnold. Department of
Public Works is aware of conditions on the roadway and is working hard
at snow plow operations. Please use caution and residents are
encouraged to limit their travels to essential travel only at this time.
Persons traveling in mountainous areas should carry chains, blankets, food, water, and extra warm clothing in their vehicles. To report lane blockages, or other county road issues, please call 754-6402 and to obtain the current status of snow removal on county roads, please call 754-6017. Aloft Art Gallery hosting air show to benefit rehorse rescue
The Aloft Art Gallery’s annual “On the Wild Side” show is all about
horses this time. We are supporting ReHorse Rescue Ranch with 20% of art
sales from participating artists going to help our four-legged friends
at the ranch from February 9th through February 28th.

Bigelow, Wieckowski Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Reduce Wildfire Threat
SACRAMENTO – A bill by Assemblymembers Frank Bigelow
(R-O’Neals) and Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) would reduce the fuel
available for devastating wildfires in California by improving forest
thinning projects. From 2005-2011 more than 832,000 acres of forest
land burned in wildfires, costing the state over $1.2 billion in fire
suppression costs.
“This bill will assist and encourage landowners to engage in forest
thinning projects that reduce the threat and intensity of wildfires
throughout California,” Bigelow said. “Our legislation is a responsible
solution for California’s forestry industry and the environment.”
New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,617,090 acre-feet
of water. The lake level dropped two feet this week, and is currently
at 1015 ft. above sea level and 72 ft. from full. Water temperature
warmed a little and is 50-54 degrees. The lake is clear, to slightly
stained with some debris floating on the surface. The lake has turned
over.
Trout: Slow.
Department of Fish and Game is now planting rainbow trout weekly at New
Melones. The lake has turned over. The trout are still scatter
throughout the lake from 0-30' deep. Trolling anglers
caught a few fish trolling the main lake and upriver. The fish are hard
to find. The anglers that are catching them are spending the entire day
on the water to get them. A crawler trolled behind a flasher our sling
blade continues to be the most productive setup. Generally in past years
this is a great time to target brown trout. Try using large plugs or
rolling shad to catch these big fish. It looks like we will be getting a
little rain, and some cloud cover. Use gold, copper, and fire tiger
baits during low light conditions. These colors will stand out and you
will get more strikes. Bank fishing was a little slow
this week with only a few fish being caught per angler. The standard
bait rig with a long leader seems to be your best bet. Use a sliding
sinker with a 3-4' leader and a light wire hook. A crawler/mallow combo
is a proven fish catcher. Another good setup is a Berkley Pinched
Crawler with a pink or white Gulp, or Power Egg. Also, try using a shad
patterned casting spoon on main lake points. Kastmasters and Krocodiles
are great baits because you can cast them a long distance. Fan cast
from deep to shallow to locate were the fish are feeding. Check areas of
the lake near fresh running water. Running water flushes nutrients and
insect into the water for fish to feed on. Don't forget to add scent to
your bait. Garlic, shad, and anise are all good scents for trout.

Week Contest. He caught a 3-pound, 3-ounce rainbow on a Rapala while
bank fishing.

These cats are in desperate need of a home! They will be homeless on
the 20th of this month. Precious is 13yrs old, female, spade, gray
Persian cat. She is a house cat. Friendly and is used to living with 3
dogs and 1 other cat and a bird. She is in good health.
Kitty is 1-2 yrs, old female, spade, gray 1/2 Persian cat. she is healthy and happy and is used to living in the same home as Precious. However, it is not necessary to keep them together. This cat is also a house cat.

THE AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION WITH THIS SYSTEM IS NOT OVERLY SIGNIFICANT. HOWEVER...COLDER AIR WILL LOWER SNOW LEVELS DOWN TO AROUND 1500 TO 2000 FEET. THE MAIN PART OF THE STORM IS EXPECTED TO PASS THROUGH THE REGION ON TUESDAY.
