Blues and bones - BBQ and Blues...what a great combo

On Saturday July 27, 2013 the Bones and Blues Festival was held at Frogtown. Those who turned out in the heat were treated to some mouthwatering bbq and an extremely eclectic selection of bands and music as well as a young up and coming blues guitarist.

The BBQ masters competed for the coveted championship of Blues and Bones title as well as cash prizes. The competition was heavy and the selection varied from prok to chicken and brisket to hot links with a little bit of everything thrown in between.

ANGELS CAMP, CA (July 30, 2013)—The Calaveras Visitors Bureau (CVB) has announced its 2013-14 board of directors, which includes a complete switch-up among the executive board and the addition of several new leaders from around the county.

The new elected members of the board include Heather Ginn of Cave and Mine Adventures, Sid Marsh of the Ebbetts Pass  Visitors Center and Bears Lair Inn, as well as Jan Hovey of Hovey Winery and Target Marketing who was also appointed to the executive board as vice president.

Selma Sattin - a featured artisit of Town Hall Arts - shared her love of nature and her passion for art with children and adults last week at a free watercolor class held at Town Hall Arts.

Selma began her artistic journey after thirty years in the nursing profession. Studying with Murphy's artist Carolyn Macpherson, Selma quickly developed her own style and feel. Today her journey continued with the instruction of sketching, mixing colors and learning the technique 'water color wash' all while using ladybugs, spiders, dragonflies and more as models.

Hunger Strikes continue in nine State prisons

SACRAMENTO – As of today, 561 inmates in nine state prisons are on a mass hunger strike disturbance, down from 12,421 inmates on July 11, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). An inmate is considered to be on a hunger strike after he has missed nine consecutive meals.

A total of 385 inmates have been on a mass hunger strike continuously since July 8.

CDCR is also releasing additional information on the death of California State Prison-Corcoran (CSP-Corcoran) inmate Billy Michael Sell, 32, following inaccurate and misleading statements from hunger strike advocates about the circumstances of his death.

Amendment to require a warrant for NSA to seize phone records fails

AMASH AMENDMENT TO HR 2397 – Requiring a Warrant for NSA Seizure of Phone Records: YES.   This amendment ends NSA’s warrantless seizure of Americans’ phone records.  The Fourth Amendment requires that before the government may seize a person’s private records, it must first show there is probable cause to believe that person has committed a crime and specify what the government is looking for. Yet this critical tenet of our Bill of Rights has been pushed aside in the name of national security. Yes, it would be easier to catch terrorists without the Fourth Amendment -- still easier if we could station a soldier in every home without the Third Amendment.  But we draw some very clear Constitutional lines beyond which the government is forbidden to tread, lest we start down a very slippery slope – as Franklin warned, trading essential liberty for temporary safety until we end up losing both and deserving neither.  The requirement of a search warrant BEFORE seizing a person’s records is one of those lines.  This amendment restores it.

This has been a summer of alarming revelations that suggest our government is drifting far from the principles of individual liberty and constitutionally limited government that defined the American Founding and that produced the most free and prosperous Republic in the history of mankind.

 

These developments include:

 

The use of the IRS and other government agencies to single out ordinary Americans because of their political beliefs with the apparent intention to discourage and intimidate them out of participating in the public policy debate;

 

The use of the Department of Justice to target reporters who are asking embarrassing questions of the administration – in one case with the threat of prosecution under the Espionage act;

Haze in Copper from Sierra National Forest Fire

he Aspen Fire was discovered on Monday, July 22 burning on the Sierra National Forest- High Sierra Ranger District. The fire is burning below Stump Springs Road north of Aspen Springs.
Additional resources continue to arrive, assisting in fire suppression. Sierra National Forest initial suppression efforts, crews were able to keep the fire from burning into the Kaiser Wilderness. Firefighter and public safety remains the highest priority.
The South Central Sierra Interagency Incident Management Team assumed command of the Aspen Fire at 6:00 P.M. July 24, 2013. The team is working with the Sierra National Forest to manage suppression efforts.
Smoke from the Aspen Fire is impacting air quality in local communities. Individuals sensitive to smoke are suggested to remain indoors and keep windows closed, to minimize exposure to smoke.
The fire is in steep, rugged, inaccessible terrain. There is no imminent threat to the communities of Big Creek or Huntington Lake at this time.

Road and Trail Closures
Roads:
Stump Springs Road is closed to all traffic due to fire suppression activity.
Minarets Road (4S81) from Fish Creek to Jackass Rock Organization Campground, Grizzly at Beasore Road to Minarets Road are closed to the public. Residents within the road closure are allowed into the area with valid identification.
Trails:
Per the U.S. Forest Service Closure Order number 15-13-09, the Kaiser Wilderness is closed.

According to CALFIRE press release 7-27-13 - Firefighters are battling 22 new fires due to over 1800 lightning strikes in Northern Calif. the last 24 hours.The largest fire is 7 acres.

Taxpayer TV Program

Our first two programs were taped on 7-24-13. They were 1/2 hour interviews with Jon Coupal of HJTA and Senator George Runner, Board of Equalization. We will report when they are scheduled for showing.

Fire Tax

The tax bills are going out soon. It is recommend that you protest the tax again, if you want a refund, providing the HJTA lawsuit is successful. Go to the HJTA website for instructions.

CCTA recommends opposing this legislation due to it's drive to increase taxes and oppress our liberty.

Angels Camp PD press release re: Vehicle Pursuit / ACPD Case # 13-0862

On July 25, 2013 at approximately 1:20 AM, an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department observed a blue 2003 BMW sedan traveling at speeds greater than 70 mph on South Main Street. The Officer attempted to stop the vehicle in the area of Demarest Street and South Main Street.

The driver of the BMW failed to yield to the Officer’s emergency lights and siren. The male driver made a sudden left turn into a nearby parking lot, accelerated, and proceeded east bound on Demarest. He then ran a red light at South Main Street and Murphys Grade Road, and continued north bound on South Main Street at a high rate of speed. He ran another red light at South Main Street and Hwy 4, and continued west bound on Hwy 4 to Pool Station Road at speeds reaching over 100 mph.

The Officer observed the driver exit his vehicle on Pool Station Road, climb over a fence, and run into a nearby field. An Angels Camp Police Department K9 was deployed, and the driver was apprehended.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as 29 year old Scotts Valley resident, Kyle Rogers. Rogers was treated for minor injuries, then booked into the Calaveras County Jail for Evading a Peace Officer, Reckless Driving, Resisting/Obstructing a Peace Officer, Driving Under the Influence, and Driving on a Suspended License.

Library craft day celebrates bugs!

At the weekly Copperopolis Library story and craft hour the children were read 'Snappy Little Bugs.' The little book covered the lives of most bugs and had the children primed and ready to create their bug themed gift cards at craft time. With the help of aids Lily Jackson, Kathleen and Terri approximately 14 children made their own perfect greeting cards with bugs and animals of their choice.

Little 3 year old Jersey seemed especially pleased with her bug card creation.

Sheriff Dept Press release re:Wanted West Point Man Arrested for Stealing a Logging Vehicle

(West Point, CA) On July 19, 2013 at 9:10 pm Calaveras Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 3800 block of Lily Gap Road in West Point for a suspicious circumstance. According to reporting parties an adult male stole a logging truck and had been detained by residents in the area. During the investigation the deputies learned that Arrestee Roger Gibbings (42) of West Point allegedly stole a large logging vehicle that belonged to Sierra Pacific Industries. He then proceeded to crash through two metal gates causing $2000.00 in damage to the gates.

Walking man of Murphys on the mend

On July 11, 2013 Ric Ryan - aka the Walking Man of Murphys- received a new right knee at the VA hospital. Though this will hinder his walking ability for up to eight weeks he plans on hitting the road to walk for vets and Operation Mend as soon as the doctors will allow it.

"I can not drive for six weeks and they tell me I won't be able to walk my 6 to 10 miles every day for about two months. That will be hard for me but I guess that just has to be. I will start walking around the house to get it all back and I think I will be walking my walk sooner then they think, we'll see.I WILL NEVER QUIT WALKING FOR THE VETS." Ric Ryan USMC 64-68

Truckin' for Hospice Motorcycle Poker Run hits the Old Corner

The annual 'Truckin' for Hospice'  motorcycle poker run ran through the foothils this past weekend and landed for a spell at the Old Corner with a final destination in Manteca.

Proceeds from the event benefit Community Hospice and San Joaquin Hospice.
