CHP REMINDS REVELERS TO SAFELY RING IN THE NEW YEAR

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is urging motorists to begin the
New Year responsibly. If the celebration plans include alcohol, designate a driver before the
festivities begin. The CHP will be ringing in the New Year on the roadway with motorists as
part of a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP), which begins at 6 p.m. on Tuesday,
December 31, 2013, and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, January 1, 2014.
“In an effort to promote safety on California’s roadways we will have every available officer on
patrol throughout the holiday travel period,” said Commissioner Joe Farrow. “With all the
excitement and celebration, the holidays can be a particularly deadly time due to an increased
number of impaired drivers on the roads.”

Surprise Grant for the Copperopolis Food Pantry

In late December the Copperopolis Community Food Pantry received a surprise grant of $5000 from the Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) to support its services. It is part of a generous grant CCF received from the Federlein Family Fund of the San Francisco Foundation in memory of LLoyd Federlein. The grant to the Copper Pantry is specifically intended to support seniors in Copperopolis.

News of the grant was definitely a surprise to David and Lorraine Crawford, chair and co-chair of the Copper Pantry. "It's an honor to be chosen by the Calaveras Community Foundation to receive such a grant. We're excited about this opportunity to do more for our seniors. They really deserve a helping hand" said Lorraine.

The pantry board will meet in early January to plan how to best use the grant to benefit their senior clients. They plan to have something special for the seniors at the next food distribution on January 16

Sheriff Dept Press Release re: Parolee Arrested after Confrontation with Deputies

Parolee Arrested after Confrontation with Deputies
(San Andreas, CA) On 12/29/13 at approximately 9:50 PM, sheriffs deputies were
dispatched to the Mark Twain Hospital parking lot for a report of a man with a gun. The
man was identified as Wayne Eric Townsend (51) of San Andreas. Suspect Townsend is
on California state parole, and is known to deputies. The sheriff s deputies searched the
area and located Suspect Townsend standing at the rear of the Cal Works building at the
corner of Mountain Ranch Road and St. Charles Avenue in San Andreas. Upon
contacting Suspect Townsend the deputy ordered him to show his hands, which he
refused to do. Instead, Townsend turned away from the deputy, lifted his shirt, and began
reaching into his waistband. The deputy, taking swift action, rushed Townsend, who was
intoxicated, and knocked him into a large shrub. As Townsend fell to the ground an 11
liz-inch knife flew from his hands. Suspect Townsend was immediately taken into custody
and booked into the Calaveras County jail. The deputy suffered minor cuts and scrapes
from the shrubbery. When Suspect Townsend was asked if he had planned on using the
knife against the deputy, he refused to answer.

County to possibly look for new location for Copper Library

The Copperopolis library has had its fair share of drama in the past few years what with threats of closure, water damage in a previous rental and multiple moves due to budget constraints, but this time the county has no intention of closing the library, they are just researching a possible relocation.

According to Lori Norton, County Administrative Officer, the goal of the County is to get "the best value for the tax dollar."

New Years Eve party at the Old Corner

Delta Tunnels Price tag to reach $67 billion

For more than a year, Gov. Jerry Brown's administration has been describing his plan to build two massive water tunnels through the Delta as a $25 billion project.
That would rank it as one of the largest public works plans in California history.
But when factoring in long-term financing costs, the price tag actually ranges from $51 billion to $67 billion, according to new figures that emerged last month.
While there's nothing unusual about long-term debt to finance big projects, the new numbers suggest for the first time that the interest payments for the controversial water tunnels could be even more expensive than many traditional projects financed by bonds.

Gov Grants 127 Pardons on Christmas Eve

SACRAMENTO – On the eve of Christmas, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that he has granted 127 pardons.

The individuals granted pardons all completed their sentences and have been released from custody for more than a decade without further criminal activity.

Individuals who have been convicted of a crime in California may apply to the Governor for a pardon. Most applicants for a pardon have obtained a Certificate of Rehabilitation, which is an order from a superior court declaring that a person convicted of a crime is now rehabilitated. A gubernatorial pardon may be granted to people who have demonstrated exemplary behavior and have lived productive and law-abiding lives following their conviction. Pardons are not granted unless they are earned.

Calif. schools prepare for transgender rights law

With a law that spells out the rights of transgender students in grades K-12 set to take effect in California, school districts are reviewing locker room layouts, scheduling sensitivity training for coaches, assessing who will sleep where during overnight field trips and reconsidering senior portrait dress codes.
But administrators, counselors, teachers and school board members also are watching and waiting. The law, the nation's first requiring public schools to let children use sex-segregated facilities and participate in the gender-specific activities of their choice, could end up suspended within days of its Jan. 1 launch if a referendum to repeal it qualifies for the November ballot.
To obtain a public vote on the law, passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, a coalition of conservative groups called Privacy for All Students has collected hundreds of thousands of signatures. Counties have until Jan. 8 to verify them through random spot-checking.
Depending on how many are found to be valid, the secretary of state will approve the referendum, determine that it failed or order a review of every signature.

History of Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa 2013 begins on
Thursday, December 26
and ends on
Wednesday, January 1

Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach, created Kwanzaa in 1966. After the Watts riots in Los Angeles, Dr. Karenga searched for ways to bring African-Americans together as a community. He founded US, a cultural organization, and started to research African "first fruit" (harvest) celebrations. Karenga combined aspects of several different harvest celebrations, such as those of the Ashanti and those of the Zulu, to form the basis of Kwanzaa.

Copper Kids LOVE Grandparents

Mrs. Handgis' and Mrs. Crawford's first grade classrooms at Copperopolis Elementary participated in the 'Adopt a Grandparent' program through local Mary Kay consultant Karen McLaughlin for the residents of Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital in San Andreas helping to bring a little Christmas cheer through gifts to those in residence at the home.

The goal was for the classrooms to raise $50 ... but as Copper kids are known to do, they exceeded all expectations and raised  $161!! Due to the large amount of money raised the classrooms were able to adopt many grandparents!

Mrs. Handgis and Mrs. Crawford are very proud of their children's hard work and loving hearts!

Thank you Mrs Handgis and Mrs Crawford, you are more than teachers, you are role models.

And thank you Copper Elementary First graders for sharing your love and making a difference.

Merry Christmas

History of Christmas - history.com

Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. December 25–Christmas Day–has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

4H helps those in need with a litle holiday cheer by, Megan Borzone

On Friday, December 13th, the Copper Hills 4-H Club went shopping for a needy family in Copperopolis.  The four kids asked for things such as Barbie dolls, shoes, warm clothes, and Christmas outfits. After shopping, everyone met up at Copperopolis Elementary to wrap the gifts.

We would like to thank Castle & Cooke for providing us with the opportunity to raise funds during the Town Square Copper Concert Series. Without it, we would not have been able to help this needy family have an unforgettable Christmas.

Lake Tulloch Tootsies bring Christmas cheer to 84 Copper Children

For the past 8 years, or more, the Lake Tulloch Tootsies have been hosting the Angel Tree in Umpqua Bank so that people in the community may anonymously 'adopt' a child in need in our community in the hopes of bringing a bit of love and Christmas cheer to the children 0-17 in our community who without this event may not have a Christmas.

Each angel hung on the tree has a child's age, their needs and their wants. Needs vary from child to child, but the simplicity of the lists are heart wrenching. Repeatedly the requests' list ask for such items as jackets, socks, shoes, sweaters and other basic items many of us take for granted. While one would think the wants list would reflect a more frivolous set of requests, these too are simple and sadly what many of us again take for granted; coloring books, soccer ball, bicycle, doll, toy car, etc.
There are criteria to be met for submitting a child to the Angel Tree; each family submitting a child must be a resident of Copperopolis and attending a Copperopolis school or a school in our district, the family must meet an income level equivalent to qualifying for the food pantry. With these guidelines in place, there were still 84 children in Copperopolis who qualified, and 84 children who will have a very Merry Christmas thanks to the Lake Tulloch Tootsies and the community.
Left to right: Carol, Onie, Freda, Sandy, Lorraine - 5 of the 25 Tootsies involved in the Angel Tree program.
