Letter to the Editor re:Melones trout need your help from Glory Hole Sports
The
Department of Fish and Game is ready to deliver rainbow and brown trout
to the fish-raising pens at New Melones Lake. Kokanee Power (who
donated the pens) is getting the pens ready, but there has been some
damage to them. They need some able-bodied volunteers in the next few
days to assist them with repairing the pens and placing them in the
water at the marina. If you can help at all, please call Ken at (209)
601-4462 and offer your help- even for a few hours.
The pens need to be
repaired and ready for the trout by next week, so this is sort of a
"fish emergency" Help if you can, please.
Your efforts will keep Melones kicking out those trophy trout for the future!

Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life
and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is
thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain,
when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming
ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as
a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day,
incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was
known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween
evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by
child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of
countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get
colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings,
costumes and sweet treats.
SRT's Cinderella - simply enchanting
How does one recreate a well known children's classic to excite and enthrall the masses while holding true to the storyline? Apparently you hire director Scott Viets! Because Sierra repertory theater has done just that, under the creative direction of Scott Viets the timeless classic of Cinderella has come alive in a modern way without losing a single drop of the classic storyline. Add in the whimsical and fun set designs by Jay Heiserman adapted by Jeff Cooper and the modern music by Mark Seiver and you have a play that grabs every age group, every musical genre and everyone's heart.
While everyone knows the fairytale, you will be pleasantly surprised with the directors interpretation of the parts and how they are to be played. For instance, the fairy godmother? We all know and love her as the sweet, doddering, old lady, right? Well this fairy godmother is sassy, fun-loving, and full of spunk. She will have you laughing before you know it. And the step sisters? Well they are a brilliant combination off Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum with a little more 'dumb' thrown in for good measure. Add in some mice that become horses, a glass slipper, some magic, some music and a pumpkin...well, and you know the rest.
Cinderella played by Samantha Bruce was cast perfectly. Samantha clearly enjoyed the singing, dancing, joking, and simply having a 'ball' with her part. Fairy Godmother played by Illeana Kirven is perfection in a white sparkling gown. Her smile radiant, her love for theater clear in each movement and each line..all the way down to her rickety old wand that seems to work when it wants to and her ever present sense of mischievous humor.
If you have children or you are a child at heart, this play will bring a smile to your face and laughter to your heart.

Gov Brown sends assistance to East Coast responding to hurricane Sandy
Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today directed the California Emergency
Management Agency and California National Guard to send specialized
assistance to the east coast to help in responding to Hurricane Sandy.
On Monday, the California National Guard sent military transport aircraft carrying two helicopters and two highly trained Pararescue teams with their equipment to Charlotte, North Carolina. Aircraft are also being deployed including a Boeing C17, two C130 aircraft and two HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters.
A total of 83 personnel will soon be positioned close to the affected areas for quick deployment. These teams are trained in medical aid, search and rescue and other emergency response activities.

New Melones Fishing report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,479,725 acre-feet
of water. The lake level dropped a foot this week, and is currently at
1001 ft. above sea level and 87ft. from full. Water temperature has
cooled a bit and is in the 60's. The lake is clear, to slightly
stained. The lake will "turn over" when surface water cools to the same
temperature as the deeper water- around 53-54 degrees. This usually
happens around Thanksgiving, and then the trout bite really turns on for
bank-anglers and trollers alike. Good news, the middle ramp on Glory
Hole Point is open, which makes for an easy walk.
Trout: Fair! Trolling anglers
had very little luck this week fishing the main lake. The trout seem to
be in transition from deep to shallow water. We have had reports of
fish being caught from 5-65 feet of water. With the water temperature
dropping we should start seeing more fish being caught toward the
surface. Try using shad patterned trolling spoons such as, Needlefish,
Excels, Slimfins, and Speedy Shiners. The fish are feeding heavily on
3-5" shad. Large plug baits like Countdown Rapalas, Rattle traps, and
Speed traps might coax a few fish into biting. At this time of the year
we will start to see more days of rain and cloud cover. These can be
great day for fishing. Try using bright colored baits, like fire tiger,
and hot steel Rapalas. Also, gold and copper blades seem to work better
than silver during low light conditions. Bank fishing
has been slow, but should start to pick up as the water temperature
cools down. We have had a few reports of fish being caught from the
shore. Also, try fishing small feeder creeks and inlets whenever we get
some rainfall. Cooler running water attracts fish, and also washes
nutrients and insects into the lake. River and stream season ends on November 15th.
Kokanee:
Slow. The schools are heading to the back of creek arms, and upriver
for their annual spawn and die. Most of the kokanee being caught are
dark with hooked mouths. Some clean silver fish are showing up in the
dam/spillway area, but are fairly small. They are taking standard
kokanee setups, sling blades and hoochies in pink, orange, and green. Be
sure to add plenty of Pro Cure Scent to your dodger and your bait.
Garlic, anise, carp spit, and kokanee special have all been producing.
Don't forget to bring corn soaked in these same scents.
Bass:
Good. The shad are staging in 15-30 feet of water on main lake points
and at the mouths of major creek arms. There are small little clusters
of shad, and there are huge schools. A lot of the fish are targeting
shad as their primary food source. Try using shad patterned deep diving
crank-baits and deep rip-baits to get to the depth they are feeding at. A
good trick to get a little more depth out of your baits is to add some
suspend dots or suspend strips. These adhesive pieces of lead are easy
to apply to any bait and you can make a suspending bait slowly sink, or
make a floating bait suspend. When you locate fish that are too deep to
target with plugs, try using a ½-ounce spoon or a drop-shot rig. Remember
to practice catch and release! If you do keep a bass, please keep the
spotted bass and release the big female (largemouth) black bass. Glory
Hole Sports can teach you the difference, so you can practice good
conservation of the species.

Catfish:
Good. The catfish seem to be moving shallow and feeding on
cloudy/rainy days. The weather forecast for the next couple weeks shows
we might be seeing some of these kinds of days. This would be a good
time to get out your umbrellas and rain gear. Hit the water and soak
some bait for a chance at a lunker cat. Melones catfish tend to be
fish-eaters rather than bottom foragers, so use live minnows, frozen
shad, mackerel, or anchovies for best success. Move/drag your bait
slowly across the bottom to cover more water and target fish that are
aggressively feeding. Generally cats will feed in shallow flats or areas
with large chunk rock near deep water.
Glory
Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week contest goes to Matthew Repko of
Sonora. He caught a massive 18-pound, 12-ounce lunker using anchovies,
on a double-hook rig. 
Kao
and Maicoua Vang caught two hefty cats weighing 8-pounds, 6-ounces and
7-pounds. They fished near Tuttletown with anchovies, in 20-30 foot of
water.
Cliff Goddard of Sonora caught this chunky 11-pound cat using nightcrawlers.
Crappie:
Slow. There are fish in 15-40 foot of water, in the backs of creek
channels near submerged timber. Live minnows or red worms fished under a
slip-float, with a bobber stop is a good way to target these fish.
Also, try using red/white mini jigs, small grubs, and 4" soft plastic
worms. Crappie too, will gorge themselves on shad. Try to locate the
bait in shallow areas and the fish shouldn't be far.
Hurricane Sandy Updates
10-30-12 UPDATE: This morning begins much the same way last
night ended: With a very wet New York City, an even wetter New Jersey,
millions of people without power, and more reports of confirmed deaths
that resulted from the storm formerly known as Hurricane Sandy.
We'll begin with the saddest news first. At least 16 people died as a
result of the storm: five in New York, three each in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania, two in Connecticut, and at least one each in Maryland,
North Carolina, and West Virginia. Three of those killed were children,
according to reports, the youngest of which was only 8 years old.
Estimates for the number people who are without power this morning
range from about 6 million to 7.4 million, many of which should prepare
for the possibility that it could be days before their lights are turned
back on.

On October 27, 2012 Micki and Larry's Sports Pub held their 15th annual Halloween party complete with live music by Copper Holding Company.
The music began at 9 and continued past 1, with an official door closing at 2 am. Costumes ranged from pirates to a sack of potatoes (which was pointed out was responsible for the lives of the pirates as without the potatoes they all would have gotten scurvy), there was an ingenious plug and receptacle pair (male and female) and a Freudian slip (which had to be explained a few times), there were ghouls, angels, Flo and Mayhem, girl scouts and more.
If you missed this event....the Sports Pub Rockin' New Year party is just around the corner...get your dancing shoes out!

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California
motorcyclist deaths are on the rise. The increase in motorcycle involved collisions
reverses a trend of significant decline in such collisions since 2008. In
response, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) asks for
the motoring public’s assistance in preventing future tragedies involving motorcycles from happening on
our roadways.
“Everyone on the highway plays an
important role in preventing collisions,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Motorcyclists are encouraged to
ride safely and defensively, while drivers need to look out for motorcyclists who are sharing the road.”

AB109, which has been in place since October 1, 2011, reduces the prison population in State prisons by sending the N3's (non- violent, non-serious, non- sex offenders) to the county whence they came to serve their time within the county jail or probation programs. Trailer bills SB89 and AB 188 followed to ensure funding for AB 109. According to BI Inc, when Calaveras County signs the contract with BI Inc, the contracted adult day reporting center will be open within in 60 days.There has been no confirmation on the date of the signing of the contract from either BI Inc or Chief or Probation.
Flags at Half Staff - for CALFIRE Battalion Chief Rob Van Wormer of Jamestown

regarding the death of California Department of Forestry and Fire
Protection (CAL FIRE) Battalion Chief Rob Van Wormer:
"It is with great sadness that Anne and I learned CAL FIRE Battalion Chief Rob Van Wormer has passed away. We extend our deepest condolences to Rob's family, friends and everyone at CAL FIRE during this difficult time."
Chief Van Wormer, 47, of Jamestown, was pronounced dead at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz Saturday night after losing consciousness while assigned to an investigation in Santa Cruz County. He was a 24-year veteran of CAL FIRE. Chief Van Wormer is survived by his parents Sharon and Ken, both of Alpine; wife, Jennifer Van Wormer; and sons Austin and Dalton. Rob is also survived by his brother Kirk, of Petaluma, who is a chief officer with CAL FIRE; and sister Debbie Van Wormer of Alpine.
In honor of Chief Van Wormer, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.

Olive Harvest Time in Copper
Aaron and Nadine immigrated to America from Israel in 1978. Each worked hard as educators and raised a family. Now in retirement they have begun a new chapter of their lives - olive farmers.
After taking many courses offered at US Davis regarding small farming and the need for sustainable agriculture, Aaron and Nadine were hooked. They knew they wanted to grow olives and produce olive oil.
The first order of business was to purchase land that had the qualities necessary for fruitful crops, good soil, adequate climate, access to water, etc. They landed in Copperopolis, where not only did they find the perfect land for their new venture, but a golf course where Aaron could enjoy his other favorite past time...a nice leisurely game of golf.
Four years after the first olive season, this reporter was invited to participate in an olive harvest. Not one to turn down a new experience I readily accepted. Decked out in my finest grubbies (hubby in tow) I ventured to the 6 acre, 1000 tree sanctuary known as Olive Oil of Life on O'Byrnes Ferry Road.
I was greeted by none other than Aaron himself, his daughter-in-law, his daughter-in-laws father (visiting from Denmark), his wife Nadine, and other various friends and family. All gathered to help with the annual harvest. Chatter, harvesting and friendship ensued, each in heavy doses.

Extra Patrols tonight
According to Sheriff Dept PIO Sgt Hewitt the Calaveras County Sheriff
Dept will have an extra Deputy assigned to the Copperopolis area from 6
pm to 2 am tonight, October 27, 2012 "to cover any additional calls brought
in by the Halloween Party." The party referenced is the Dawn of the Dub
to be held at Lake Tulloch Resort. In addition to the Dawn of the Dub,
the Old Corner, The Sports Pub and the CCLTOA all will be having
Halloween parties, many with live music, tonight.
