5-19-14 Fishing Report

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding

830,092 acre-feet of water.  The lake level dropped five feet this week and is currently at 917 ft. above sea level and 168 ft. from full.  The water is stained in some areas, and clear in others.  There are mud lines forming near the shore throughout the day. The average water temperature is 68-73 degrees and rising daily.  The boat launch ramps on the Glory Hole side have been moved back out to the end of the point which makes for an easy walk.

A note from Glory Hole Sports

Well, it is looking like the government shut-down of New Melones Lake may last a while.  

Obviously, this will affect businesses in the local area- Glory Hole Sports especially. With the Rim Fire causing such a reduction in tourism during the month of September, this is a double hit for all local businesses.

To help us keep our cash flow positive, we will be offering a deep 20% discount on all taxable merchandise in stock (no special orders).  This includes all tackle, marine supplies, sunglasses, clothing and hats, water toys... basically everything in our store that you don't eat or drink.  We will offer it for one week- until Wednesday, the 9th, or until the government gets their act together... whichever happens first.  We may extend the sale longer if the lake closure continues.

Purple Heart Anglers 'Take a Vet Fishing' Event

Once again, our customers amaze and humble us.  When I sent out a notice about the Purple Heart Anglers Take A Vet Fishing event coming up on Melones on June, 15, calls and e-mails poured in, and many came to buy prizes and gift certificates for the vets to win.  So many of our customers are vets themselves, and they really like to support one another.  Hats off to everyone who offered to the use of their boat, and who donated prizes.  If you have not volunteered but want to, it's not too late.

 

We also need to get the word out to local vets.  If you are involved in any way with a VFW or VA, or any other association that offers support to our vets, please spread the word- we want to provide the opportunity for them to get a fishing rod in their hands, and get out on the water.  Not just on June 15, but one a one-one-one basis when it can be arranged.  Purple Heart Angler also provides opportunities for vets to enjoy hunting.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  

New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,573,753 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped close to one foot this week, and is currently at 1010 ft. above sea level and 77 ft. from full.  Water temperature is warming daily with the average being 54-56 degrees and some parts of the lake 58-60 degrees in the afternoon. The lake is clear, to slightly stained with some debris floating on the surface.

Free Fishing Seminar at Glory Hole Sports

Save the date of Saturday, April 6th, 2013 so you can attend our annual free fishing seminar.  From 8 am to 3 pm, fishing guides and  who are knowledgeable about all forms of freshwater fishing in our area will be on hand to teach you  their secrets.  Guides will have their boats and gear on hand so you can see how they rig up.  Format will be casual- you can walk around and talk to the guides that interest you, and ask any questions you may have.  

In addition, we are working on putting together some fun fishing-related games for kids and adults,  and we will award prizes.

New Melones Fishing Report by Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,573,753 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped close to one foot this week, and is currently at 1011 ft. above sea level and 76 ft. from full.  Water temperature warmed a little, average is 52-54 degrees with some parts of the lake warming to 58-60 degrees in the afternoon. The lake is clear, to slightly stained with some debris floating on the surface. The lake has turned over.

Trout: Fair.The bite seems to be getting better.  Most anglers are catching a few fish with the occasional limit coming in.  Trolling anglers are catching fish at various depths, from the surface to 25 feet.  To locate the fish try running a dodger/crawler combo from 15-25 deep on one rod, and large floating Rapala on the other.  Also, a number of brown trout are being caught. This is a great time to troll for trophy size browns.  Try using large plugs such as a J11 Rapala in firetiger or shad pattern. Another good way to catch the big ones is by rolling shad.  Reminder: The Department of Fish and Game will no longer be planting brown trout.  So, we do encourage catch and release a will not recognize them for our weekly big fish contest.  Bank fishing has picked up a little due to the small amount of rainfall. There are trout cruising the shoreline and the surface early morning and late afternoon.  Try using Berkley Mice Tails, or a Pinched Crawler/egg combo.  The water and air temperature has warmed and will continue to warm this week. Toward the afternoon look for insects hatching.  To catch the trout that will be feeding on them. Try using the bubble and a fly technique. Wooly buggers, pheasant tail, and bead headed prince nymphs will catch them.

Letter to the Editor re:Melones trout need your help from Glory Hole Sports

The Department of Fish and Game is ready to deliver rainbow and brown trout to the fish-raising pens at New Melones Lake.  Kokanee Power (who donated the pens) is getting the pens ready, but there has been some damage to them.  They need some able-bodied volunteers in the next few days to assist them with repairing the pens and placing them in the water at the marina.  If you can help at all, please call Ken at (209) 601-4462 and offer your help- even for a few hours.

The pens need to be repaired and ready for the trout by next week, so this is sort of a "fish emergency"  Help if you can, please. 

Your efforts will keep Melones kicking out those trophy trout for the future!
