It was only a drill and the staff reported it to be successful.

I would like to request your participation, once again, in speaking to my United States History students on your experiences while serving our Nation.  I have scheduled this year’s presentation Friday, May 2, 2014, from 8am – 12:45pm  in the Lower Gym of Bret Harte High (same location as last year). 

The purpose of this presentation is to help bring history alive for our students.  Who else can tell the story of our Armed Forces better than those who have worn the uniform?  Learning history on a first-person basis is the most remembered history.

Like years past, I will have the Lower Gym setup in an “exhibitor” fashion with small groups speaking with each presenter for approx. 20 minutes.  I would like to encourage you to bring with you any momentous, pictures, etc. that will help to tell your story.

Bret Harte Admin comes under fire

On Friday April 4, 2014 , approximately 30 Bret Harte students participated in a ‘walkout’ to bring attention to the grievances allegedly filed against Dalila Hernandez.

According to Senior, Ally (last name withheld), she and her younger sister Laura had followed school policy three weeks prior to the walk out, but had not seen any proof the school had addressed the issue.  The issue at hand was the active bullying of Laura. 

County Schools Donate Food Items to Resource Connection

In an effort to provide a donation to the Resource Connection Food Bank, the Calaveras County Office of Education reached out to county schools asking for donations of canned and non-perishable food items. We received generous donations from Kathi Grover’s class at Albert Michelson School, Jacey Bray’s class at Bret Harte High School, and Jane Ferguson’s class at Mountain Oaks School.

Bret Harte Homecoming JV brings home a win - by Kristina Zimmerman

Friday night under the lights was in full swing again, but this time, it was Homecoming! October 11, at Angels Camp, Bret Harte celebrated the annual Homecoming with a downtown parade, rally, announcement of the Homecoming queen, cheerleaders and of course, the football games. 

Homecoming started off full swing with the parade leading to the downtown rally. Staff and students were able to come together as one in celebration. 

The parade was then followed by the downtown rally, where cheerleaders and band members performed, guardian angels were revealed, and the football players got fired up. Once the rally was over and the community was set into high gear, the JV game began its battle against Amador. 

The JV Bullfrogs dominated and in the end they come out with a win of 27-14. Great job boys!

Freshmen and New Student Orientation will take place on Tuesday, August 20th from 8:30 – 1:30.  Information and a bus schedule for Freshmen and New Student Orientation was mailed to parents and students in July. The opening packet also included the application for Free and Reduced Lunch.  If you feel you qualify please fill out the application and return it to the high school office or mail it to Food Service, Bret Harte High School, P.O. Box 7000, Angels Camp, 95221, as soon as possible. Applications turned in before the first day of school will be processed as they are received. Parents will receive a letter in the mail on the status of their application.  Please be advised that students will need to bring a lunch or money until the application is approved. If you did not receive an opening packet or if you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Hillman at 736-8339.

Bret Harte to weigh lay offs - Calaveras Enterprise

With a May 15 deadline approaching, the Bret Harte Union High School District Board of Education will decide whether to lay off teachers on Monday. Trustees will also resolve whether to move Vallecito High School to the district’s Angels Camp campus.

Preliminary notices handed out at Bret Harte

Accordning to Bret Harte Superintendent Michael Chimente, referencing the preliminary notice resolution adopted by the Board of Education, there were "9 preliminary notices issued; some were partial and includes 1.43 Admin support."

Final layoff notices, if any, will be issued prior to May 15, 2013.

Bret Harte High School CLOSED 2-20-13

Bret Harte High School has closed for the day 2-20-13, there will be no classes held.

Bret Harte facing possible layoffs

According to Bret Harte Superintendent Michael Chimente, due to the continued decline in property taxes which is "90% of our funding" there is a need to "reduce staff to reduce the budget."

"We have been spending down our reserve hoping for the economy to recover...its not trending that way." The district is to hold a 4% reserve, in order to maintain that reserve layoffs may have to be made "across the board." Administrative and certificated staff must receive a preliminary notification by no later than March 15 with a final by May 15. Whereas classified staff may receive less notice time.

By June 2013 the County Treasurer/Tax Collector will have a firmer dollar amount of possible revenue. "We will know for sure" when those numbers are released, said Chimente.

Bret Harte Music Dept concert tonight! 11-20-12

Tuesday, November 20, the Bret Harte music department will hold its annual Sweet Sounds and Sweet Treats concert and dessert auction, a benefit for the Bret Harte music department. The concert starts at 6:30 and will be held in the theatre on the BHHS campus.

Bret Harte Seniors raising funds for grad night fireworks

At many local events you may see Bret Harte students carrying about coffee cans decorated creatively with miles of duct tape and sharpie pen art asking for donations to raise funds for fireworks at the 2013 graduation.

According to Chris Perez - pictured below - at one time Bret Harte had fireworks at their graduations yet due to the high cost they were discontinued.

Well, the class of 2013 wants to go out with a bang and has taken it upon themselves to raise the funds for a sparkling grad night.
