Calaveras Artist, Libby Fife, teaches “Split Primary” Six Color Mixing Chart for Watercolors

Calaveras Arts Council is now offering affordable art classes at the Gallery Store location at 22 N. Main Street in San Andreas.  Local Calaveras artist, Libby Fife, is teaching a beginning art class on how to create a color wheel.  In this one day class, you will learn to make a version of a “split” primary color chart that uses both a “cool” to “warm” version of each of the three primary colors in a your  watercolor kit.  You will learn how to mix a variety of primary and secondary colors as well as some lovely grays and browns (neutrals).  This class is focused on the concept of creating a limited palette to use as a guide in painting or sketching.  Limited palettes can help to unify your sketches and teach you about your paint properties, and are a useful compositional tool.  They are great for beginning painters on the go too because there is less to carry.

Calaveras artists are excited to welcome you into their homes and studios from which you can see and purchase their creations.  Visit historic locations like Stephen’s Cash Store (aka: Chevron Station) in Sheep Ranch where several artists are gathering to showcase their work.  Tour Calaveras towns and back roads and greet and talk with the artists during the Calaveras Artists Studio Tour, Saturday and Sunday, September 27-28.  Artists from past years tours return and new artists to the tour join in.  The Artists Studio Tour brings artists and art lovers together in relaxed and friendly environments where the various elements of art are shared and enjoyed.   Artists will be on hand from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on both days for questions and discussion as they “show their process” and reveal how, why and where they create their artwork.  Purchase original art, prints or unique gift items directly from the artist.

Black Irish Band Closes Out Calaveras Arts MIP in Murphys on August 13, 2014

The Black Irish Band of Sonora will close down Calaveras Arts Council’s MIP and help say farewell to summer in their own unique musical style in Murphys on Wednesday, August 13.  Music starts at 6:30 pm but come early to set up your picnic dinner, chairs and co-mingle with family and friends.   If you leave your picnic dinners at home do not fret.  Murphys Hotel will be selling dinners of chicken marsala with roasted red potatoes, garden green salad, garlic bread, and watermelon slices for dessert.  Tanner Vineyard wines are also available for sale.  The dinner is $10 and all proceeds go to help maintain the park.

Cowboy Minstrel Pipp Gillette come to Turner Park, San Andreas for Calaveras Arts, Music in the Parks

Cowboy Minstrel, Pipp Gillette from Crocket, Texas, performs for the Calaveras Arts Council’s Music in the Park series on August 6.  San Andreas’ beautiful tree studded Turner Park will be filled with happy cowboy music and story lovers on August 6 listening to this real live cowboy sing and play traditional cowboy music.   Music begins at 6:30p and ends at 8:00p.

Pipp lives and runs the family ranch.  He is a true cowboy.  He plays guitar, banjo, harmonica, and bones.  Pipp sings in a strong baritone voice, of cowboys dying on the prairie, of outlaws and horses, of lovers saying farewell, of hard times come knocking at the door.  He even does a few vaudeville and minstrel show comedy routines.  Along with just being a cowboy minstrel, he is an award winning chuck wagon cook.  To add to that he even makes decoys.  In a very western way, you’d call them Renaissance man.  What can’t he do?

Sourdough Slim and Robert Armstrong pony up with great entertainment for Calaveras Arts Music in the Parks 2014

The Calaveras Arts Council is happy and laughing to bring back MIP favorites, cowboy entertainer Sourdough Slim and his sidekick Robert Armstrong to The HUB at the Arnold Cedar Center July 23, 2014.  Music starts at 6:30 pm, but get there early and stake your ground for these two cowboy entertainers.  

Roots revivalists Sourdough Slim and Robert Armstrong are passionate about the music they play and the culture from which it springs.  Proud torch-bearers of America's rich roots music heritage, the two demonstrate their enthusiasm from the first catchy bars of "My Last Old Dollar" to the last wistful strains of their phenomenal re-creation of Stan Jones' immortal "Riders In The Sky." These exceptional showmen joyously rekindle the country blues, western classics, vintage jazz and string band repertoire of twentieth century rural America.  A fast-paced performance that showcases their seasoned gift for connecting with audiences is a surefire treat.  

Calaveras Arts Council presents: Grover Anderson in Moke Hill’s Shutter Tree Park

Mokelumne Hill was once a sleepy little hamlet but that was decades ago. It is now a bustling hamlet with lots going on; especially about music.  On Wednesday, July 16, Calaveras Arts Council brings Music in the Parks to Moke Hill’s Shutter Tree Park and the music will be cranked up with folks dancing, Lion’s Club members selling pies and ice cream, and with much more going on.  Music starts at 6:30pm but folks come early to set up camp with their picnic dinners and low back chairs.

Grover Anderson performed last year for MIP but it was one of those summer days when the thermometer read 102 degrees in the shade.  This year the temperature will be cooler but the music will be hot.  Grover is an amazing, singer-songwriter based out of Murphys with an intellect and style in the prolific traditions of the folk-rock pioneers of the 60s and 70s. Grover says the industry requires a genre so he is all about folk but he prefers to known as a story teller.  Regardless of his genre, the crowds will be engaged by his music and storytelling.   Grover is accompanied by foothill musicians Kevin Bernido on bass; Josh Certo on drums; and Chris Stevens on lead guitar.

Sit back; enjoy an evening of music with Suprecret’s long list of classic rock, blues, jazz, reggae and county music.  Calaveras Arts Council’s Free Music in the Park 2014 series will fill the air in Valley Spring at the Ball Field on July 9.  Music begins at 6:30pm and ends at 8:00pm.  Bring your low back chairs, picnic dinner and beverages of choice.

Suprecret has a newer history as a performing duo but each musician has a lifelong involvement and performance experience in music.  Don Barker on vocals and guitar with JoAnn Ebbett on piano and vocals bring their intimate ballads, rock and roll, blues, reggae and country sound on stage for the audience to enjoy.  However, don’t just sit there, get up and dance.

Opting to play the whole length of the concert without a break, Scotsman Donnie McDonald and Irsihman James Keigher of 'Men of Worth'  performed, informed and told tales through their performance at CAMPS restaurant for the June 25th Calaveras Arts Council Music in the Parks series.

The Delta Wires high octane performance was a wonderful experience for our neck of the woods; quality blues with a lot of soul and a bit of rock.
The concert was the second of a wonderful line up from the Calaveras Arts Council 'Music in the Park' series.

For over two decades Calaveras Arts Council has hosted free summer concerts.  Music in the Parks 2014 will be another great music series.

The “first day of summer” starts a week earlier in Calaveras County.  On Wednesday, June 11, the Calaveras Arts Council begins its 23^nd year of providing free music in the county parks from Copperopolis to Arnold, and Valley Springs to West Point.  This fun fill musical road show is called Music in the Parks.  Residents and visitors pack up their favorite picnic treats, pull together their lawn chairs and blankets, and set out for ten weeks of great music, family friendly environments, and kick back to savor the experience.

Cowboy Singer, Dave Stamey, comes to town

Mike Fleming, Director of the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival says “Dave Stamey is one of the best Western songwriters alive today. His melodies blend perfectly with his lyrics to the point where you can almost feel the wind against your face and smell the soft scent of the sage.  He never fails to engage his audience and take them on a rewarding journey through the panorama of the West.”  Jack Hannah of the Sons of the San Joaquin says Dave Stamey is “One of the most talented young songwriters in the country”.  Calaveras Arts Council Ovation’s ticket holders will have an opportunity to sing their own praises for him when they see him perform for the arts council’s last show of the season.  Called the Charlie Russell of Western Music by Cowboy and Indians Magazine, Dave Stamey comes to the Dr. Elliott Smart Performing Arts Center in Angels Camp on Sunday, March 30. 

High School Artists Featured in annual Show at Calaveras Arts Council

ArtSpirit, the 17th annual High School Juried Exhibition will open in Calaveras Arts Council’s Gallery Calaveras on Saturday, March 15.  Student artists are from Calaveras, Bret Harte and Mountain Oaks high schools.  A public reception will be held on Saturday, March 15 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. in the gallery.  The gallery is located at 22 Main, San Andreas.  First, second and third place judging results will be announced at 2:00 pm.

Cash awards will be presented to first and second place winners; ribbons for third place, in each of 12 categories. These include Black and White Photography, Color Photography, Digital/Computer Art, Oil or Acrylic Painting, Watercolor Painting, Pastels, Drawing/Illustration, Functional Ceramics, Sculpture, Printmaking, Other/Mixed Media, and Crafts.

Since March has been designated both nationally and statewide as Arts Education Month, this ArtSpirit exhibit is meant to call attention to the importance of having an education steeped in the arts. The exhibit provides the public with the rare opportunity to observe and purchase art created by the county’s many very talented teens.  Last year hundreds of students entered over 200 works. 

Captivating Chinese Dance comes to Angels Camp for Ovations Performing Arts Series

Indie Rock Opera comes to Calaveras Arts Council Ovations 2014 Performing Arts Series with The Family Crest

The Family Crest is an American orchestral indie rock band based in San Francisco.  Lots of things are exciting about The Family Crest, but for starters, front- man, Liam McCormick was born and raised in Calaveras County’s community of Paloma and is a graduate of Calaveras High School; others facts are that these six musicians are classically trained, play multiple instruments, sing, write, and are part of a musical genus blending orchestration, jazz, folk, pop, rock, and classical music to create their own independent style.  Kimberly Chun of the San Francisco Chronicle states that "The Family Crest harbors an affection for Burt Bacharach-style swingin' romanticism that is sure to impress lovers of classic pop.
