New Melones Fishing report - from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,978,950 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped two feet again this week and is currently at 1050 ft. above sea level and 38 ft. from full. Levels will continue to drop, as room needs to be made to accommodate upcoming winter rains. Water temperature is rising and falling with the weather, and has been anywhere from about 80-72 degrees. Water is slightly stained, with mudlines forming in the afternoon.   Watch for unmarked island tops.

Trout: Fair fishing. Not as many limits, but still plenty of fat fish being caught. Trollers have been doing well fishing over the main river channel, in the main lake and at the mouths of major creek arms. The trout are feeding heavily on shad that are staging on the outside of the creek channels. In the fall the shad will move to the backs of the coves, and the fish will follow. Try a variety of shad-patterned lures such as Excel, Apex, Needlefish, or Rapala Countdown. Use Bang or ProCure threadfin shad scent on your lures. To target rainbows and browns, troll 15-45 deep- try various depths, since fish are in transition. Also, vary your trolling speed. Sometimes the fish will hit as the lure sinks as you slow down, and sometimes a faster presentation will trigger a strike. Remember- now that the trout are moving shallower, it is important to leave plenty of line out behind your boat, so your lure is away from your boat chop. Guide Gary Burns has been consistently catching limits while trolling Shasta Tackle Humdingers near the dam.

Jobs, Less Regulation Go Hand in Hand - Letter from Congressman Lungren

As I traveled our Third District this week and hosted a Town Hall in Galt on Tuesday evening it was heartening to see and hear that the majority of people I met support what we are doing and the way we are going about it.
The goals of creating jobs and getting our economy back on track are the spearhead of all of our efforts. The people I visited with exhorted us to continue to reduce spending and rid the private sector of regulatory straitjackets – both keys to creating jobs and reviving the economy.
Though some came to our Town Hall to try and “occupy” and disrupt the conversation by interrupting serious adult discussions, they did not succeed. I can assure you the greatest support and spontaneous applause came after people stood and thanked us for voting down another stimulus program disguised as a “Jobs Bill,” and implored us to continue to remove any and all government barriers to private sector solutions.

"It's lonely Here in Hell" Love Letters from Nam booksigning...heartwarming

Book sales reaching over 60 was not the highlight of the evening, it was the outpouring of love and support from family and friends.
Two of Jim's brothers, Tom and Dennis, with their wives and families attended along with cousins and lifelong friends.
A heartmelting event occurred early in the evening when Swanee and Abel, high school friends of Jim's and Vietnam veterans arrived surprising Micki and bringing her to joyful tears. Quietly speaking to Micki, Abel slowly pulled a torn dollar bill from his billfold and explained that when he and Jim had deployed to Vietnam, Jim in the Army, Abel in the Air Force, Jim had torn a dollar in half and said "when we get home we'll have a beer." 44 years later Abel still carried the torn bill....on October 23, 2011 he gifted the torn bill to Micki.
Micki said she will frame it and place on the wall at her business, Micki & Larry's Sports Pub, beneath Jim's rubbing from the Vietnam Wall in D.C.  a gift from Marine Vietnam Veteran Ric Ryan.

Sierra Repertory Theater presents: Jacob Marleys Christmas Carol Nov 11 thru Dec 18-11

JACOB MARLEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROLThe flip side of a classic Christmas tale, Jacob Marley's story begins in the afterlife where his business partner Scrooge once again determines his future. Along with a netherworld sprite and 16 other characters, Marley is brought to life with humor and heartfelt emotion. This irreverent, funny, and ultimately, deeply moving story retells Dickens' classic with warmth and infectious zest. This thrilling performance is sure to become a holiday classic for generations to come!
The Chicago Herald says it blends “a Dickens sensibility with a taste for fairy tales and contemporary wit,” and Chicago’s Citybeat calls it “delectably zany…inspired theatre, that gives the audience cause to ache, and to laugh, and in the end, to exult.”

Transportation- Copperopolis Style

Just headin' into town for some goods....

Copper Gazette comes under fire from Michael McDaniel

Recently the Copper Gazette has come under fire for reporting what Michael McDaniel claims to be “spurious mis- information” regarding the Spellman recall effort.
In an effort to report true and factual information the Gazette utilizes direct quotes from parties involved and documented information from the County elections office. However, it is not uncommon that once a person sees in writing their verbal response to a question they have misgivings about their response.
On October 20, 2011 the Gazette asked McDaniel to clarify what, if any, was the state’s involvement in the recall process, with regards to a comment he had left on the Copper Gazette referring to “state experts (advising) our local officials.” McDaniel responded, “Madeline (County Clerk Recorder) checked with the state to clarify as how a recall should be done in relationship to a district undergoing boundary changes. If it fell under the new boundary lines we would be well on our way to an election recalling Spellman, as our numbers from this side of old district five are going Like gang busters. Copper area being harder because people feel they already got rid of him. Also bad reporting with unsupported facts like the cost of the election and changes in the recall effort without verifying facts just adds to it. But then again maybe that is your goal?  Not sure at this point. Any time you report anything regarding me without verifying it with ME Your crossing a thin line.”

The Gazette asked for McDaniel to verify what he meant by ‘your crossing a thin line’. No response was received at the time of this writing.
According to McDaniel's reference to issues, the issue began when the Copper Gazette printed an article containing a statement from previous District 5 Supervisor Russ Thomas claiming that he was “taking the lead” for the recall effort. Both McDaniel and Thomas deny this claim. On October 7, 2011 in a telephone interview Russ Thomas stated he was taking the lead and was waiting for the paperwork. He also expressed disappointment at the lack of coverage in the Gazette for recall booths in Copper. At the time of Russ' call the Gazette was not aware of any such booth to date in Copper.
On October 8, 2011 Thomas, educated in political campaign laws, paid cash for a space at the Parks and Recs Flea Market, an open air sale for household items, and set up a recall booth possibly putting the 501c3 in jeopardy. When the Copper Gazette pointed out the jeopardy Thomas may have put the organization in he did not respond. Mr Reid, a spokesperson for Parks and Rec was asked about the possible jeapardy, he stated, “We were unaware of the potential damages that could incur. We are very sorry if this offended anyone and it will never happen again at a CP& R function.”  McDaniel signatory on the petition for recall and educated in campaign laws, declined to comment regarding knowledge of the booth.

District 4 Supervisor Tom Tryon Town Hall meeting recap

On October 19, 2011 from 7-9 pm at the CFPD Fire Station meeting room approximately 20 Copperopolis residents attended a town hall meeting where District 4 Supervisor Tom Tryon introduced himself to the residents of Copperopolis and fielded questions.

On July 12, 2011 the Board of Supervisors adopted the the new district lines placing Copperopolis in District 4 with Tom Tryon as the District 4 Supervisor.

Tryon was introduced by District 5 Supervisor Darren Spellman as the 2nd longest sitting Supervisor in the State of California with 27 years of experience and expertise.

Tryon opened the meeting thanking all for coming and introducing Mike Miller of the Calaveras County Planning commission. He spent some time catching the crowd up to speed with the current issues facing not only the county but Copperopolis. When addressing the subject of the new district lines he pointed out the "commonality of interest along the Hwy 4 corridor" and stated that policies that will benefit one community on the Hwy 4 corridor will benefit the whole corridor.

Dave's online living cookbook presents - the creamiest Polenta

The creamiest polenta…
To me, polenta is a great backdrop to hearty full flavored entrées like Osso Buco, Braised Short Ribs, Lamb Chops, really, any braised, stewed or roasted meats.  It’s especially good with an Italian sausage and ragu style sauce.   If you prefer not to add the cream cheese, it will still be good, I just think the cream cheese gives this dish a unique flavor and slightly softer texture.  A couple easy variations are to use a creamy gorgonzola instead of the cream cheese for a delicious variation or try swirling in some pesto at the end if using as a side to seafood.  Hope you enjoy this!

McDaniel Resigns

Just twenty eight days after publicly stating that he will “get back to helping the Copperopolis veterans establish a VFW post there, as it has been and continues  to be a honor in being involved in” Michael McDaniel has resigned his position as interim Vice Commander and requested all documents be returned and his name removed from the post formation roster.
McDaniels sited lack of communication and access to involvement.
Current interim Commander Al Gilbert stated that communication is the cornerstone to a well run organization and that minutes of meetings are emailed to each member;  that possibly the lack of communication came from McDaniels absence at multiple meetings where McDaniels was to have been “in charge” and the subsequent following meetings where information was distributed. Gilbert also felt that the lack of McDaniels presence at many of the meetings “conveyed to the other Veterans McDaniels lack of interest in this endeavor.”

State Corrections Officials Join Stanislaus County in Breaking Ground for Juvenile Detention Facility

SACRAMENTO -- Officials of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) joined Stanislaus County officials in a ground-breaking ceremony Tuesday for the first local facility in California to house juvenile offenders who previously would have been in state custody.

Stanislaus County was awarded more than $16 million of the $22.7 million total construction costs for the 60-bed, medium-security facility from the Local Youthful Offender Rehabilitation Facility Construction Program of 2007 (Senate Bill 81). The legislation was part of a major policy change that made counties, rather than the state Division of Juvenile Justice, responsible for housing and rehabilitating all but the most serious juvenile offenders.

Four Calaveras youth were honored at a luncheon held October 19, 2011 by the Calaveras County Taxpayers  Association  featuring keynote speaker Congressman Thomas McClintock for their winning entries in the CCTA Constitution Contest. The Taxpayers group had reached out to all Calaveras schools to celebrate the U.S. Constitution, known as "the supreme law of the land", with a creative art, essay, and video contest, the winners were:

The second place art poster $15 winner was Gabriella Malamed, 4th grade, of Valley Springs Elementary school.

Pointing out that  "If the sixth amendment wasn’t established many of the innocent who had been falsely accused for something they didn’t do wouldn’t have defense."

Hugs, Donuts and Gunfire ~ By, John Howsden

According to Mel Ogg, his trip back to the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. last month was, “well worth the time and wait. I am grateful to Honor Flight and all the volunteers that put it on.”  When asked what his trip was like, his eyes lit up and he blurted out, “I got a lot of hugs from the USO ladies serving us coffee and donuts at the airport.”

A warm welcome from the USO ladies was just the beginning. The Virgin Atlantic airline pilot got on the public address system, and for all the passengers to hear, welcomed the thirty-one veterans aboard. Five hours later, when they touched down at Dulles airport and taxied to the terminal, fire fighters mounted on fire trucks showered the airplane in water from their hoses.

From the airport the veterans were loaded onto a shuttle headed for the hotel, wheels chairs first followed by the “walking wounded,” as Mel refers to the ones getting around under their own power. Once at the hotel they paired up with another vet and were assigned rooms. Shortly after getting their rooms, they met downstairs for a buffet dinner. It was during the dinner that a microphone was passed around so everyone could introduce themselves. Mel dreads public speaking, so it was only fitting that he was handed the mike first. He summed up his introduction by describing himself as, “one of the old marines lucky enough to make it back.” They hit the sack early after dinner as they had a full day planned for tomorrow.

Governor issues proclamation declaring "Steve Jobs Day"

On October 16, 2011 Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued a proclamation declaring October 16, 2011, as Steve Jobs Day in the State of California.

The text of the proclamation is below:

PROCLAMATION

In his life and work, Steve Jobs embodied the California dream. To call him influential would be an understatement. His innovations transformed an industry, and the products he conceived and shepherded to market have changed the way the entire world communicates. Most importantly, his vision helped put powerful technologies, once the exclusive domain of big business and government, in the hands of ordinary consumers. We have only just begun to see the outpouring of creativity and invention that this democratization of technology has made possible.

Hibernation Stew - from Mike Shevlin

Feeling Like Hibernation Time?
It sure feels like winter and out comes the comfort foods . . .
I’ve tried different recipes over the years but I keep coming back to this stew.
Dad’s Hearty Stew
Ingredients
3 pounds cubed beef for stewing (Chuck roast or Lamb works)
Vegetable oil as needed to brown meat
32 ounces beef stock (not low fat this is comfort food)
4 cups water added as needed during simmer
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
6 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
6 carrots, cut into 1 inch pieces
5 stalks celery, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 1/2 large yellow onions, chopped
2 teaspoons cornstarch
2 teaspoons cold water
1 Tsp Catsup
1 Tsp A-11 Tsp WorcestershireLarge plastic bag with ¼ cup flour, Tsp pepper, garlic & onion powder ½ cup red wine or sherry to deglaze (I prefer sherry)

Directions
1. In large freezer bag mix flour, pepper, onion and garlic powder then shake cubed meat to coat. In a large pot or Dutch oven, cook floured beef in oil over medium heat until brown. Deglaze with red wine and add beef stock and add water as needed to pot. Browning seals in the flavors and is the secret to a good stew or soup. Stir in rosemary, parsley and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer 1 hour.
2. Stir potatoes, carrots, celery, and onion into the pot. Dissolve cornstarch in 2 teaspoons cold water and stir into stew. Cover and simmer 1 hour more.
3.  Serve with fresh baked buttermilk biscuits then see if there are any leftovers . . . ; )

It's Scary Season ~ By, Jon Coupal

It’s scary season again, and not because of the little monsters who will appear at our doors on Halloween. It’s those property tax bills that are showing up in mail boxes across the state.
Fortunately, as a direct result of Proposition 13, which limits increases in a property's assessed value to two percent annually, most property owners have a good idea what their tax bill will be even before opening the envelope. Still, every year at this time, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association reminds taxpayers to carefully examine their latest property tax bill. Although not common, assessors do make mistakes.
Taxpayers should understand the various charges and make certain that they are not being dunned for more than they are legally obligated to pay. The best way to check a tax bill is to have your previous year's bill handy for reference.
Checking the bill is especially important for those who bought their homes a few years ago at the height of the market. If the current home value is actually lower than the assessed value shown on the tax bill, the owner is entitled to file for a reduction in taxes.

State Controller releases September cash update

State Controller John Chiang today released his monthly report covering California's cash balance, receipts and disbursements in September, showing revenues came in $301.6 million below projections from the recently passed state budget.
"For better or worse, the potential for revenue shortfalls is precisely why the Governor and Legislature included trigger cuts in this year's State spending plan," said State Controller John Chiang.  "September's revenues alone do not guarantee that triggers will be pulled. But as the largest revenue month before December, these numbers do not paint a hopeful picture."
