Copperopolis VFW becomes a reality

According to interim Commander Al Gilbert the formation to form a Copperopolis VFW has reached fruition.

Gilbert drove to Sacramento on Thursday 1-5-12 to meet with the State VFW administration. With all membership forms and proper paperwork in hand Gilbert entered the meeting. An hour and a half later, after each form had carefully been checked and re-checked Gilbert was told that Copperopolis would have a VFW Post number assigned within the next two days!

Many, many months of work and effort from local veterans have made this a reality.

Congratulations Veterans of Foreign Wars Copperopolis.

The Copper Gazette will post information as soon as it is received at to the date of the official ceremony.

If you would like more information on how you can join or support the Copperopolis VFW email Al Gilbert at coppervfw@gmail.com.

Copperopolis VFW formation makes news in the Stockton Record

By, Dana Nichols
COPPEROPOLIS - It's not easy to start a new Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
Yet, a small band of military veterans in Copperopolis is trying to do just that. For more than a year, they've been seeking to muster the 35 combat veterans required to form a new post.
After getting 30 together, a few prospective members had changes of heart.
Right now, the group has 26 members, said Al Gilbert, a Navy veteran serving as the prospective post's commander.
"We are still close," Gilbert said.
Whether the Copperopolis group ultimately succeeds is a struggle of love versus demographics and possibly a few internal demons.
The love is easy to see. Charity Maness, a writer living in Copperopolis, in summer 2010 renewed a dormant effort to form a VFW post because she wanted her son, Marine Corps Sgt. Chris Maness, to have a place to be with fellow combat veterans when he returned from service in Cuba, the Middle East and Afghanistan.

McDaniel Resigns

Just twenty eight days after publicly stating that he will “get back to helping the Copperopolis veterans establish a VFW post there, as it has been and continues  to be a honor in being involved in” Michael McDaniel has resigned his position as interim Vice Commander and requested all documents be returned and his name removed from the post formation roster.
McDaniels sited lack of communication and access to involvement.
Current interim Commander Al Gilbert stated that communication is the cornerstone to a well run organization and that minutes of meetings are emailed to each member;  that possibly the lack of communication came from McDaniels absence at multiple meetings where McDaniels was to have been “in charge” and the subsequent following meetings where information was distributed. Gilbert also felt that the lack of McDaniels presence at many of the meetings “conveyed to the other Veterans McDaniels lack of interest in this endeavor.”

Veteran Community Picnic - Old Fashion Fun

On Sunday September 25, 2011 the Copperopolis Veterans hosted a community picnic open to all members of the Copperopolis community. There were antique WWII jeeps on display, antique fire engines, live music, hotdogs, gunny sack races, and so much more.

The event was opened with a prayer by Father Jim from the Church of the Ascension and a reading of the POW prayer. Following the prayer the national anthem was sung beautifully by Rachel Brousseau, a Bret Harte Sophmore and Copperopolis resident.

The Copperopolis Veterans group is a group committed to starting a VFW Post in Copperopolis and committed to community involvement.

WWII Veteran Mel Ogg

Korean Veteran Bill Skellenger

The winner!

Just about the cutest firefighter ever.
