R/C Races - Organized Chaos

What is your first thought when someone says, "I race R/C cars?"
After you ask, perplexed, "Whats an R/C car?" Next you think, isn't that just for kids?
Well not at Amos Hobbies aka Sonora R/C Raceway.
Kids of all ages, from 5 to 80 something, were in attendance at Sunday's opening race day held at the newly remodeled and redesigned racetrack behind the hobby store.
The day consisted of three heats for each category. The 5 race categories were: buggy, open, 4W drive, novice and pro short course. There was every make and model of R/C car represented and every level of racing enthusiast.
By the race track the hobby shop has provided covered workbenches complete with outlets for battery charging. The camaraderie was palpable. Everyone was sharing tools, ideas, and swapping shop talk. I discovered quickly that I needed to brush up on my r/c lingo, for it was definately a foreign language to me, but none-the-less the excitment in the air was electric.
When the first novice race was called the racers placed their cars on the track and then climbed the platform to control their cars from overhead the track. The horn sounded and the cars were off. Some at break neck speeds and others at not so break neck speeds. There were flying cars, flipping cars, crashing cars, and lots and lots of laughter.
Amos Hobbies announced that they will continue to have races every Sunday and on Mother's Day they will have free hotdogs..so "bring your mom to the races" day may become an annual event.
