Conditions: The King Fire is burning in steep terrain in the South Fork of the American River Canyon, Silver Creek Canyon, and the Rubicon Canyon, north of the community of Pollock Pines. The fire has crossed into Placer County and has burned onto the Tahoe National Forest. The recent rainfall over the fire did little to slow fire behavior. Red Flag Warnings are predicted over the fire area for high winds and low relative humidity from September 23 at 2:00 p.m. until September 24 at 8:00 p.m. Crews are building direct line where they can, and indirect line where unsafe conditions exist. A spot fire on the east side of French Meadows Reservoir, north of the leading fire edge, is close to full containment. Two heavy helicopters began making water drops on the spot fire in the late afternoon. Crews in Zone 1 located and mopped up two nearby spot fires that were identified overnight by aerial infrared camera. The King Fire is being managed in Unified Command with CAL FIRE, Eldorado National Forest, and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. Federal Team CIIMT 5 (Jim Giachino) will be coordinating firefighting operations of Zone 1 (northern portion) of the fire, and CAL FIRE IMT 5 (Kevin Smith) is managing Zone 2 (southern portion) of the fire. The damage assessment of the White Meadows area continues, currently 10 residences and 22 other type structures were destroyed.
