Trisha Welch has been working for a year and a half recycling products to raise money to see her community project through to the end in order to earn the Girl Scout Silver Award.
The Girl Scout Silver Award —the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn—gives the scout the opportunity to show leadership skills, highlighting their organization, determination and dedication to improving the local community.
Trisha's project was to help the Bill Albee Memorial Community Garden Grow.
Two weeks ago Trisha culminated her recycling programs, turning in cans, bottles, ink cartridges, etc and had accumulated a total of $240.00. Her goal was to plan a planting day at the community garden.
After contacting Jack Jimenez to find the needs of the garden, she learned that bees were in short supply this year, causing problems with pollination hence a smaller crop of veggies than expected.
Armed with this knowledge, Trisha researched the variety of plants that would not only do well in our Copper weather, but would be bee friendly, and organized a group of scouts and their siblings to meet on August 6, 2011 at the community garden. Dads were also on her invitation list as some deep holes needed to be dug.
Trisha's mother, Jessica Welch, said, "I am so proud of her. She has worked so hard."
As for Trisha, she seemed extremely humble about her efforts, as children worked about her and parents were at her beckon call, saying that this was something she had always wanted to help with and that it would be her last project as a Girl Scout.
Heading into high school next year she is looking forward to the wide variety of extra curricular activites that will be available to her.
