Redrawing of District Lines May Change Copper’s District Representative

With the population of Copperopolis and the entire District 5 area growing in leaps and bounds in comparison to other districts, negotiations for redistricting will begin soon.
According to District 5 Supervisor Darren Spellman the state law mandates that each district cannot have less than 17.5% or greater than 22.5% population of the entire county within each district’s boundary. Currently our districts percentages and populations are as follows:
District 1: Toffanelli
10,269 (22.5%)
District 2: Wilensky
7, 836 (17.2%)
District 3: Callaway
6,654 (14.6%)
District 4: Tryon
9,031 (19.8%)
District 5: Spellman
11,788 (25.9%)
This raised the question once again from Spellman as to the disparity of goods and services received in his district in comparison to, not only other districts (District 2 mainly), but to what he felt was the lion’s share of the county revenue of taxes collected coming from District 5.
With rumors of Tryon possibly not seeking re-election and that Copper may end up in District 4’s hands left many at the meeting to ponder what will happen to the representation of Copper. “Here we are again, the unwanted child” said one resident, worried that though “we bring in a large percent of the revenue (that) we may not be represented equitably.”
