Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River) issued the following statement in advance of a funeral service Saturday at which the Sacramento Sikh community will mourn the death of Gurmej Atwal, 78, who succumbed to gunshot wounds April 15. Mr. Atwal and Surinder Singh, 65, were on a walk near their Elk Grove home last month when they were shot. Mr. Singh died immediately and Mr. Atwal remained in critical condition until his death.
“During this Holy Week when so many in our faith communities are turning their eyes to God, I am doubly saddened by Gurmej Atwal’s passing. It is a shame that during this time of renewal and reflection our community must suffer another funeral service born out of such a senseless and cowardly act. I offer my condolences to the families of Mr. Atwal and Mr. Singh, and I continue to include the Sikh community in my prayers.”
It was learned this week that the Elk Grove Police Department has increased its investigative task force, but there still are no suspects. Elk Grove continues to work with the FBI in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
