At the Bill Albee Memorial Community Garden volunteers this weekend worked to til the ground, clearing the soil of rocks and turning over a bumper crop of fava beans to create nitrogen rich soil for planting.
According to Jack Jimenez, Deistel will be donating and delivering 10 cubic yards of manure this coming week to further prepare the ground for planting.
Each time the ground is tilled more rocks seem to appear, Jack said that last season the students at Rite of Passage assisted the garden clean up by clearing away the rock and creating a small area for the local scout troop to plant. Jack is hoping the group will offer their help again this season as the rocks seem to multiply with each tilling.
Approximately 100 'Ace' tomato plants were donated by local active volunteer Tim Reed. Tim, a teacher in Escalon, said that the high school students he works with planted the tomatoes as a project and have donated them to the community garden. He said they also donated plants of basil, parsley, cilantro, red peppers, and bell peppers.
