AB 1527 firearm display restriction on its way to Governor

This bill made it through concurrance and is on its way to the Governor's desk.

 

AB 1527 (Ammiano and Portantino)
Firearms.

Existing law prohibits, with exceptions, a person from possessing a firearm in a place that the person knows or reasonably should know is a school zone, as defined.

This bill would, additionally, exempt a security guard authorized to openly carry an unloaded firearm that is not a handgun and an honorably retired peace officer authorized to openly carry an unloaded firearm that is not a handgun from that prohibition.

Existing law, subject to certain exceptions, makes it an offense for a person to carry an exposed and unloaded handgun on his or her person outside a motor vehicle or inside or on a motor vehicle in public areas and public streets, as specified.

Assembly moves to repeal fire fee - SF Gate

The end of the legislative session is less than a week away and the chess game over getting bills passed is nearing its always-dramatic finish.
Earlier today, the Assembly inserted language into bill in order to repeal the $150 fire prevention fee for homeowners in state responsibility areas. You can read all about that fee here.
To cover the $90 million that would have been raised by the fee – which opponents call an illegal tax – a different bill is to be amended next week. That bill, AB1500, would fund a major reduction in tuition and fees at the University of California and California State University for middle class students. Read more about that here.
So what will happen is that out of the approximately $1 billion in revenue raised by AB1500– which comes through a change in how corporate taxes are calculated – $90 million will be set aside to cover for the loss of the fire fee.

Sonora PD Press Release re: Stolen Vehicle Arrest

13 June 2012, Marcis Perez of Sonora reported the theft of his 1985 Toyota pick-up from the parking lot of an apartment complex on Greenley Road. On 19 June 2012, Perez’s truck was located in a ravine, by the California Highway Patrol. At that time, there were no suspects.

The investigation into this matter continued and Leslie Hay, 22 of Sonora, was identified as being one of the possible suspects involved in the theft of Perez’s pick-up.

Copper Cellars bringing edu-tainment to Copper

Copper Cellars in Town Square will be hosting a wine tasting – story telling – book signing event August 30, 2012 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

The story teller / edu-tainer will be none other than local story teller and Gold Rush era history buff Linda Clark aka Hardluck Lin, telling stories from her novel ‘The Small Window: The Story of Hardluck’s Beginning.’

With a natural love of history and a little push from being married into a family steeped in gold mining family history, Linda gravitated to the stories and the history of the period. What began as a school program of storytelling of Hardluck Lin’s tales to enhance the classroom’s goldrush experience quickly became an opportunity to write down Linda’s own experiences as Hardluck Lin. According to Linda, she broke all the ‘rules’ of writing when completing her novel, as she tried to force herself into a regime or schedule. Upon realizing that Hardluck Lin had her own way of telling the tale, the story told itself and Linda “ran after the story, panting and out-of-breath.”

Calaveras County Strike Teams deployed

With over 486, 000 acres of wildland fires burning in California's National Forests, Calaveras County Strike Teams have been deployed.

According to the CalFire TCU (Tuolumne Calaveras Unit) they have 2 strikes teams deployed to fight the National Forest fires as well as one strike team from Calaveras County Fire Districts.

A strike team consists of five engines, with each engine carrying a minimum of three firefighting personnel. Current Calaveras deployment totals 15 engines and 45 fire fighting personnel.

Engines and personnel from Central Fire, San Andreas Fire, Jenny Lind Fire, Foothill Fire and West Point Fire are currently battling the Chips fire in Plumas National Forest. The Chips fire has reached a total of 74, 000 acres burned with an 87% containment.

Assemblymember Olsen asks Senator Feinstein to encourage President Obama to visit Central Valley

SACRAMENTO ––  Following up on her repeated criticism of President Obama’s failure to ever visit California’s Central Valley during his presidency, Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, had a letter hand delivered to U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein during her visit to Modesto today, asking her to encourage President Obama to visit the area.

Senator Feinstein was in Modesto today for a luncheon hosted by the Modesto Chamber of Commerce.

Governor Brown Issues Legislative Update

Fill-the-boot this weekend

Saturday September 1st the firefighters and volunteers from Copperopolis Fire Protection District will be hosting their bi-annual 'Fill-the-boot for the food pantry' event at the Lake Tulloch Plaza from 10 am to 2 pm. (Volunteers from the VFW Post 12118 and Ladies Auxiliary will also be helping at this event.)

Twice a year for the past few years CFPD has been raising much needed funds for our local food pantry through the fill-the-boot program. Just recently they have been joined by the VFW and Auxiliary. 

The food pantry currently feeds an average of 45 to 50 local families. As the economy fluctuates so does that number. In 2011 the fill-the-boot raised 75% of their donations for the year.

Governor Brown Announces Pension Reform Agreement to Save Billions by Capping Benefits, Increasing the Retirement Age and Stopping Abuse

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today outlined a sweeping pension reform agreement that saves billions of taxpayer dollars by capping benefits, increasing the retirement age, stopping abusive practices and requiring state employees to pay at least half of their pension costs.

“These reforms make fundamental changes that rein in costs and help to ensure that our public retirement system is sustainable for the long term. These reforms require sacrifice from public employees and represent a significant step forward,” said Governor Brown.

Fire Prevention Fee bills in the mail

George Runner announced today that the State of California has mailed more than 40,000 “Fire Prevention Fee” bills to date.

“About 5% of the estimated 825,000 fire tax bills are in the mail so far.” said Runner. “The state is currently sending bills to taxpayers in Calaveras County. Up next are Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte and El Dorado counties.”

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

New Melones Lake Fishing Report 8-28-12

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,567,255 acre-feet of water. The lake level has dropped two feet again this week and is currently at 1010 ft. above sea level and 78 ft. from full.  Water temperature is in the low 80's.  Lake is stained, with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days, and days with a lot of boat traffic. Good news, the lower ramp on Glory Hole Point is open, which makes for an easy walk.

Trout: Great!  We are seeing a surprising number of trout caught, for this time of year.  Trolling anglers are bringing in some great trout. 

 

 Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest goes to Dave Roberts, who spent his day fishing with Gary Burns "Take it to the Limit Guide Service." He brought in a hefty 3-pound 14-ounce rainbow he caught while trolling a chrome/blue spoon 75' deep near the dam. 

Copper School Officially Welcomes Karen Vail as Principal

Since Karen’s first class of kindergarteners that she taught graduated high school last June, it’s a safe bet that many, many children in Copper know and love Miss Vail. 

Teaching now for 13 years, Miss Vail has taught kindergarten, k/1 splits and straight 1^st grade, as well as holding the position of Itinerant Resource Teacher between Mark Twain and Copper, Independent Study Teacher, Yearbook advisor, Lead teacher for MTUESD – planning staff development and supervising professional collaboration days for the district – and the title of Assistant Principal of Copper School since October 2010. When the principal job became available “I applied…and went through the same interview process as the other candidates.”

Fireman’s Fun Day will be held again this year at Utica Park on Saturday, August 25 from 10 AM until 6 PM. This popular event draws both residents and visitors while offering great visibility for Angels Camp merchants and the community. 

Fireman’s Fun Day has united the community for fifty years with the traditional BBQ in-the-barrel tri-tip and chicken, spaghetti and garlic bread dinner.

City of Angels Camp Fire Department offers free fire truck rides. The fun day includes games, competition with a fire brigade and tug-a-war for children and adults, a frog jump, bingo, horseshoes, a disk jockey with continuous music, the Community Band performance and the fund raising raffle.

 

 Opening Ceremonies will start at 11:45 AM, followed by a prayer led by Chaplain Fred Moore, the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the National Anthem. The Bucket Brigade for children will start at 2 pm. Children & adults will tug-o-war at 5:30 pm.

Governor Brown Declares State of Emergency in Plumas, Shasta and Tehama Counties

SACRAMENTO – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued an emergency proclamation for Plumas, Shasta and Tehama Counties following recent wildfires that have destroyed residences, threatened thousands of homes and other structures and caused evacuations and road closures.

On Aug. 13, the state of California began mailing the first of more than 825,000 "Fire Prevention Fee" bills to Californians who own property with a habitable structure in a State Responsibility Area (SRA)- those 31 million acres where CalFire has primary responsibility for fire prevention and suppression.

Labor Day Weekend at   Drifters Marina Is just ten days away. We hope to see you during our normal hours Thursday thru Monday.   As the kids return to school there are fewer days to be at the lake. After Labor Day weekend Drifters Grill will be closed on Mondays.  We will be open from Thursday through Sunday.   Hours: 11-am until 9-pm   Sunday, October 14th will be the last day of our 2012 Season. Honor and Celebrate Angels Camp Firemen at the 50th & Final Fireman’s Fun Day

Fifty years ago, a group of Angels Camp firemen created Firemen’s Fun Day to provide fire equipment for the department such as hoses, hose nozzles, first aid gear, and rescue equipment, personal safety gear including fire coats, helmets, and boots.  This day has become an Angels Camp tradition and fun filled day for 50 years.  Some of those original firemen will attend this last and final event as guests to be honored at the Opening Ceremonies.

Fireman’s Fun Day will be held again this year at Utica Park on Saturday, August 25 from 10 AM until 6 PM. This popular event draws both residents and visitors while offering great visibility for Angels Camp merchants and the community.

As wildfires threaten communities across the state, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today secured approval from U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to mobilize military troops and aircraft to fight fires under a single commander within the National Guard.

Murder Mystery Dinner at the Pub a redneck whodunit with a twist

On Saturday night August 18, 2012 the Sports Pub hosted yet another murder mystery dinner, this time it was a honky tonk homicide or a redneck murder mystery. The goal of the evening, besides to have fun, was to try to figure out just which resident or passer by of Copper's own Bubba's Bar could have the means, motive and opportunity to kill Bubba!

The cast included questionable Carny Folk,  Rowdy Lawless a bad girl biker, Reverend Jim Bob Eternity preachin' loud to cover his mistakes, Crystalline Daniels the promiscuous bar maid, Twyla Fleetwood the trailer park queen, Mary Kay Eternity the reverend's wife hiding a dirty dark secret, Dusty Diamond a Nashville singer hopeful with a hidden love, and Sheriff Sissy Wesson the law in these parts with a penchant for bad boys and handcuffs. All had reason to want Bubba gone, but only one was bold enough to pull the trigger.

If you missed this mystery dinner, the Sports Pub will be hosting another one in February, and this one...if it doesn't kill you it may just break your heart.

ABC Responds to Gazette Questions

Noting an arrest from the California Alcohol Beverage Control on the Sheriff Log for the Lake Tulloch BUMP party on August 18, 2012 the Copper Gazette contacted the ABC regarding the arrests and their presence at BUMP VI. The following is a portion of the letter received from the Stockton Office District Administrator.

"ABC received several reports from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office detailing disorderly activity that occurred on or about Lake Tulloch Resort during the last “Bump” party held in June.  As a result, ABC filed an accusation against the license resulting in a decision being issued on August 17, 2012.  The decision suspended their ABC license for a period of 15 days.  The suspension period was stayed for a period of one year.  This means that they would not initially have to serve the 15 day suspension.  They would be responsible for the penalty only if they had like violations occur again during the next year."

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,584,495 acre-feet of water. The lake level has dropped two feet again this week and is currently at 1012 ft. above sea level and 76 ft. from full.  Water temperature is in the low 80's.  Lake is stained, with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days, and days with a lot of boat traffic.

Trout: Great!  We are seeing a surprising number of trout caught, for this time of year.  Trolling anglers are bringing in some great trout. 

 

 Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest goes to Dave Duggan of Murphys, who spent a day fishing with Gary Burns "Take it to the Limit Guide Service." He brought in a 3.6-pounder he caught while trolling a Rapala 75' deep near Coyote Creek.

Fire Tax Protest by Howard Jarvis Tax Payers Association

Today the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association launched a new website to inform more than 800,000 homeowners across California how to qualify for a refund on the new fire tax.

The Fire Tax Protest site will serve as a one-stop resource for taxpayers who wish to protest the new fire tax, learn more information about their rights, or join a class action lawsuit to overturn what HJTA believes to be an unlawful tax.

Twisted Oak Concert Series presents - Darol Anger and the Furies - August 24

Darol Anger and the Furies will be performing at the Twisted Oak Concert Series on August 24, 2012 at 7 pm.

In Greek mythology, the Furies were ferocious godlike avengers who would swoop down on mere mortals and destroy them with relish (or, in rare cases, mustard). The only difference here is that when these fantastically talented presences swoop down on Darol Anger, the result is not destruction but inspiration.

IGA Kids Fun Day - a lot of good wet fun

Youngs Payless IGA held a Kids Fun Day on August 18, 2012 for the children of Copperopolis. The event included face painting, games, snow cones, water slides, bounce house, fire safety booth with prizes, hot dogs, dunk tank and more. There was not a single child without a smile glued on their face at this event.

The crux of the event was to promote the vast amounts of fresh produce found at IGA, highlighting the best of the seasons produce such as corn, melons, strawberries and more.

A big thank you to IGA for bringing this free event to our little community.
