'Sylivia' opening this weekend at Murphy's Creek Theater 3-30-12
A modern romantic comedy about a marriage and a dog by AR Gurney. Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career as a public-school English teacher is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him— bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn’t understand the relationship between man and dog. To Dine or Not to Dine....
This week I will be featuring Hooligans in Jamestown.
As with most folks that frequented - or even knew of - Azzo's in Jamestown it was a sad day when the doors of that fine dining establishment closed. But as with the restaurant business...the property did not sit vacant long. Soon Hooligan's opened its doors advertising 'Pub and Eats' leaving no one confused as to what type of dining experience they would have.
On a nice stroll through downtown Jamestown, if you read my last column you would know that stroll is code for shop, as I was saying, on a nice stroll through Jamestown my husband and I worked up a pretty good appetite. We had heard of Hooligan's through the grapevine, as convoluted as that is in the foothills, and thought we would give it a try.

Vehicle Accident Hwy 4
At approximately 10:02 pm 3-29-12 a call came out of a vehicle collision Hwy 4 and Poole Station. Within minutes the call was updated to car fully engulfed. Copper Fire responded, as well as Sheriff and Highway Patrol.
The accident was single occupant - driver taken from the scene by ambulance. The name of the driver is not being released at this time and the cause of the accident is under investigation.

The Calaveras County Taxpayers Association is sponsoring a series of candidate forums inviting State Assembly, District Attorney and all Supervisorial Candidates.
The first event, co-sponsored by the Copperopolis Community Center, will be held in Copperopolis at the Historical Armory on Main Street on Monday, April 23, 2012, 6:30 to 9:30 PM.
The forum will feature the Assembly Candidates first, then District Attorney Candidates and finally all Supervisorial candidates.
There will be time to mix with the attendees.
Information tables will be provided for campaign materials and light refreshments will be served.
Additional forums are planned for Valley Springs and Mokelumne Hill. Details to be announced.

28 March, 2012, at approx. 6:07 pm, a Loss Prevention Officer from Wal-Mart approached a subject who had exited the store. The Loss Prevention Officer observed the subject remove empty Wal-Mart bags from his person then place merchandise inside the bags. The subject had also put on a new pair of boots before exiting the store and not paying for the approximate $300 in merchandise he had collected.

Little John Road, from Quiver to Town Square, will be closed on Sunday April 1 from 8AM to 2PM. A detour route is available and will be marked on the day of the event, directing you onto O’Byrnes Ferry Road and Copper Cove Drive.
At the same time Time Trials will be occurring on Rock Creek road. The road will be open to traffic during that race since riders are racing against the clock 1 at a time with 30 second gaps in between.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports
Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,982,910 acre-feet of water. The lake level has been steady for the last three months and came up about a foot this last week. It is currently at 1051 ft. above sea level and 37 ft. from full. The water temperature is 53-58 degrees and clear with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days.
Trout: Fair. The weather let up a bit this week and we had more anglers on the water fishing. The fish seem to be headed for deeper water but there are still some shallow fish to be caught from the shore. We are seeing some nice rainbows this year, with a lot of fish weighing over 3-pounds. Bank anglers have been successful using bait. Try using a nightcrawler/marshmallow combo or Power Bait. When fishing nightcrawler use a worm threader and a worm blower. This way you bait will be on the hook straight and floating. When using Power Bait it is a good idea to use multiple colors to create a contrast. Trout primarily feed by sight and some colors will trigger fish better than others.
Matt and Mark Paredes of Atwater landed this limit of rainbow- the biggest one weighed 2-lb., 12-oz after it was cleaned. They used a crawler/marshmallow combo while bank-fshing near the marina.
Sheriff Dept Advisory: PRCS Jakob Main Arrested on Drug Charges
Railroad Flat, CA) On Tuesday, March 27, 2012, in a joint effort between the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and Calaveras County Probation Department, deputy sheriffs of the Calaveras County Narcotics Enforcement Unit and Calaveras County Probation Officers conducted a probation compliance check at the residence of Jakob Main (age 33 of Railroad Flat). The search was requested by the probation department and made as a result of Mr. Main failing to abide by his PRCS release conditions.

Murphys, CA) Following multiple reports of burglaries in the areas of Vallecito and Murphys, and a report of suspicious person/activity in Murphys, on 03/26/2011 Calaveras Sheriff’s deputies contacted Kyle Hicks (age 30 out of Vallecito) at a residence in the 2500 block of Sheep Ranch Road in Murphys. It was discovered that Mr. Hicks had illegally entered the unoccupied residence and had been squatting inside the house for several weeks.

Some snickered at the pants - which by the way left little to the imagination - but it only took the first few seconds of the very first song to halt all teasing and laughter, because...John ROCKED!

Assemblymember Olsen and Modesto Mother Announce Legislation to Deter Inappropriate Teacher-Student Relationships
SACRAMENTO – Today, Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto, and Tammie Powers, mother of the Modesto student who was taken advantage of by her high school teacher, announced legislation that will make it a felony for a teacher to have an inappropriate relationship with a student at the same school, regardless of the student’s age. Additionally, teachers convicted of a work-related felony would lose their pensions.
"It is an outrage that a high school teacher would engage in a romantic relationship with a student,” said Olsen. “We need to do everything we can to deter this behavior, and to ensure schools are a safe and secure learning environment for our children.”

The $20 ticket price includes dinner, lots of patriotic camaraderie and multiple opportunities to win exceptional prizes. All proceeds benefit the Veteran’s Hospital Fisher House of Palo Alto.
Copper Senior's project to help newly formed VFW Post 12118
Local senior Zachary Haste, grandson of Ralph and Eva Murphy, has created a senior project that benefits the community and the local VFW Post 12118.
Zachary's love for the automotive industry and his knowledge that many cars, especially during these tough economic times, are not maintained properly helped him to create his senior project. With his mentor, Bret Harte automotive instructor Ken Sooter guiding him, Zachary has created a day long event where anyone with a vehicle in Calaveras County (and beyond) can come to the Bret Harte campus parking lot and have a maintenance inspection. Included in the inspection will be checking tire tread and pressure, oil level and condition, fluid levels, etc. This is only a maintenance inspection for the car owner to become knowledgeable on the maintenance needed for their car.

2012 Senior of the Year Nominations Wanted
The Calaveras County Commission on Aging is looking for nominations for the 2012 Senior of the Year Awards. This is an opportunity to recognize volunteers who are a vital lifeline for many organizations throughout the county.
Eligibility requirements are that they must be a resident of Calaveras County, 60 years of age or older, an active volunteer in the county and not a previous winner. Nomination packets are available at the Calaveras Senior Center in San Andreas or online at www.calaverascountycoa.org. They can also be e-mailed or faxed to you. Just one month after Copperopolis made history with the installation of officers ceremony officially recognizing the James D Piper VFW Post 12118 Copperopolis, the Ladies Auxiliary became a reality, firmly placing Copperopolis on the national map.
On Sunday March 25, 2012 at 2:00 pm the formation of the James D Piper VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary became officially recognized as Local, State and National representatives from the VFW Ladies Auxiliary officiated the ceremony. Officers and trustees were installed and the gavel was handed over.
The members of the Ladies Auxiliary are as varied as the comrades of the VFW Post, representing foreign wars from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Another proud day for the residents and veterans of Copperopolis.
'Honor the dead by helping the living' and 'Unwavering support for uncommon heroes' are the motto's of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Copperopolis Post 12118. Newsome Harlow pours a wonderful evening at Snaps
Snaps Coffee House and Wine Bar once again hosted a delicious evening of wine tasting featuring local winery Newsome Harlow. Accompanying the great wines were appetizers to temp any palate and music to fill the heart played by Danny Burton on guitar and John Sexton on the flute - phenomenal duo.

So you’ve decided to move to the country where banding may not have quite the definition you thought it had…
So , if you’re not from the country you may think of banding as a group of friends getting together or a gathering of like minded people. However, if you live in the country it has a different meaning altogether.
Around Spring time each year when the hills turn a brilliant green and the wild flowers are bursting from their bulbs, we see lots of new little kids born. Not the bipedal kind, no, I’m talkin’ about the quadrupeds, the ones that prance around the field like the mythological little satyr…minus the flute..and the human form on top...and the fingers… I digress…

On 03/22/2012 at approx. 6:30 PM Calaveras Sheriff’s deputies received a report from Donald Parker that his wood splitter had been stolen from a property in the 5000 block of Carol Lane in Burson, and that a neighbor advised him that he had seen suspicious persons on the property. A stolen property report was completed.

Community Open House for O’Byrnes Ferry Bridge Project to be held on April 4
Calaveras County is hosting a community open house on Wednesday, April 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Copperopolis Fire Station, 370 Main Street, to provide information and receive input from community members on the O’Byrnes Ferry Road Bridge rehabilitation/replacement project. The purpose of the project is to improve the safety of the bridge and its approach roadways. This phase of the work will identify feasible alternative alignments, estimated construction costs, and funding sources.
Representatives from Calaveras County and its design team will provide an overview of the project, present preliminary alternative concepts, costs and funding, answer questions, and discuss ideas in an informal setting.
Please drop by at your convenience any time between 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A brief presentation will begin at 6:15 p.m.

Three Stolen Motorcycles Recovered in Valley Springs
(Valley Springs, CA) On 03/15/2012 at approx. 9:35 AM deputies from the Calaveras County Sheriff's office were dispatched to the 2300 block of Blake Lane in Valley Springs to investigate a report of child abuse. Upon arrival the deputies contacted Bradley Joseph Flores (42) of Valley Springs and his nephew, Ruben Sanchez (20) of Valley Springs. During the investigation at the residence deputies located an indoor marijuana grow operation and discovered three stolen off-road motorcycles outside the residence that had been reported stolen out of San Joaquin County. The total value of the motorcycles was over $6,000. The indoor grow was reported to be an approved medical marijuana operation. Flores and Sanchez were taken into custody and booked into the Calaveras County Jail. Flores is currently in custody at the Calaveras County Jail on charges of 273(a) PC, 10851(a) VC, 496(a) PC, 496(d) PC. Sanchez is currently out on bail on charges of 10851(a) VC and 496(a) PC. This case is still under investigation.

Sonora PD press release re:subject attacks officer
21 March 2012, at approx. 1:03 pm, the Sonora Police Department received a report of a male subject dressed in black with a white cowboy hat yelling at passing vehicles. An Officer responded and contacted the subject on Highway 49, across from Vic’s Towing.
When the Officer exited his vehicle, the subject immediately stated telling the Officer that he was going to kill him. The subject then charged the Officer for no apparent reason. The Officer deployed an electronic control device, but the device had little impact on the subject. However, it did stop the subject’s advancement towards the officer.

Gov announces appointments
George Alexeeff, 57, of Walnut Creek, has been appointed director of the Office of Environmental Health and Hazard Assessment at the California Environmental Protection Agency. Alexeeff has been the deputy director at the Office of Environmental Health and Hazard Assessment since 1998. He has worked at the department since 1988, serving as chief of the Air Toxicology and Epidemiology branch from 1990 to 1998, and chief of the Air Toxics Unit from 1988 to 1990. Alexeeff earned a doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of California, Davis. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $147,828. Alexeeff is a Democrat.
Gov Brown appoints California Poet Laureate
Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. appointed Juan Felipe Herrera to the position of California Poet Laureate.
Mr. Herrera, 63, is the author of twenty-eight books and currently serves as the Tomás Rivera Endowed Chair in the Department of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside. He was a professor and chair of Chicano and Latin American Studies at California State University, Fresno, from 1990 to 2004 and a teaching assistant fellow at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop at the University of Iowa from 1988 to 1990.

To Dine or Not to Dine
Where to dine or not to dine – that is the question.
It became apparent, after trying to decide where in the foothills to dine next, that relying on the yellow pages was not a good idea, nor was Yahoo or other paid-for sites. So in case I don’t write enough I thought I would start a little food critic column titled – To dine or not to dine.
Now here’s the thing, my tastes will be different from others and I readily admit that I have no culinary background, but I do think after being alive for almost 50 years I know when food is cooked correctly or not, whether a drink is poured well or not and especially whether wait staff is first-rate or in need of a career change.
