Greetings friends and neighbors!
If you
haven't been by the Bill Albee Memorial Community Garden lately, now is
the time to stop in. It is located on the west side of O'Byrnes Ferry
Road across from the IGA driveway.
The
garden is flourishing under the care of our many dedicated volunteers
and there is produce available for the picking. Specifically, we have an
abundance of several different types of lettuce and the red onions are
ready. As the weather continues to warm, the lettuce will begin to wilt,
so let's not let it go to waste. Heed the signs and pick the lettuce
leaves from bottom up. The onions whose tops have fallen over are ready
to pull from the ground. Store them for a few days with the greens left
on until they dry out. This will prevent the onions from tasting
bitter.
Although the garden would have to be USDA certified to be called "organic," it's important for you to know that the Community Garden is chemical-free and all natural. This is your invitation to go out and enjoy some yummy produce. If there is no volunteer on duty, you can still stop in and help yourself to ready produce. There is also a box on the picnic table that may contain stuff that's already been picked. While you're there, feel free to lend a hand and pull a few weeds. Or, if you're so inclined, you can drop your spare change in the donation can or send a donation with "garden" in the memo line to Copper Parks & Rec at PO Box 481, Copperopolis, CA 95228.
Have a great day,
Dena
