Sheriff Dept Press Release re:horse neglect

On 2/15/12 at approximately 1:30 pm, Calaveras Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Division executed a search warrant at 4549 Red Hill Road and seized 15 horses due to neglect. No arrests were made at the time.
Kimberly and Paul Paulden, owners and care takers of the horses, were contacted by Animal Services in September 2011 regarding skinny horses and were discovered to be caring for over 20 horses. Paulden released ten of the twenty horses to Horse Plus Rescue, two of which died after transport to the rescue in September.

Paulden cooperated with Animal Services to improve the conditions and care of the remaining horses. Animal Services received a telephone in February advising that Paulden’s herd numbers had increased. Animal Services conducted an investigation and discovered that Paulden had increased the size of the herd as well as discovered horses in poor body condition. A search warrant was obtained and the horses were removed. The most critical horses were taken to Angels Camp Veterinary Hospital for continued care and rehabilitation. The remaining horses were taken to Rehorse Rescue Ranch in Jamestown and a private ranch in Angels Camp for boarding and rehabilitation. Five of the fifteen horses are owned by private parties who were boarding the horses at the Pauldens and those owners will be contacted for retrieval of their horses.
