Letter to Mark Twain students/families re: loss of fellow student, from Superintendent Julia Tidball

A very sad thing has happened in our school community. One of our 8th Grade students, Jordan Kovacs, died on Sunday. According to her family, she and her grandfather died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. We are all profoundly saddened by her death.
Our thoughts are with the Kovacs family.
This information was shared with our students at school The Calaveras County Office of Education Crisis Team will continue to be available to students, teachers and parents. Please contact your student’s school if you have any questions or concerns.

As a parent, you may want to talk with your child about death because it impacts each person in different ways. How children react will depend upon their relationship with the person who died, their age and their experience with death. Your child may:
Appear unaffected
Ask questions about death repeatedly
Be angry and aggressive
Be withdrawn and moody
Be sad or depressed
Become afraid
Have difficulty eating or sleeping
We suggest that you take time to listen and allow them to talk. Answer their questions simply, honestly and be prepared to answer the same questions repeatedly. I know that you join me in sending your deepest sympathy to the Kovacs family,
Sincerely,
Julia Tidball
Superintendent
Mark Twain Union Elementary School District
