For the third time, the State Board of Education has awarded Copperopolis Elementary the Title I Achievement Award.
Though 6000 schools within the State of California receive Title I funding only 210 have met the criteria for this award.
The criteria are as follows:
· A high percentage of socioeconomically disadvantaged students
· Two consecutive years of meeting adequate yearly progress on STAR (standardized testing and reporting) assessments
· An API (academic performance index) score that is above the median for elementary schools
· Have met school and sub-group API targets
Superintendant/Principal Julia Tidball states, “Despite the many challenges, the overall API score for our school has increased 71 points and our socio-economically disadvantaged students have shown a gain of 112 points. This is phenomenal growth.”
This award brings with it no financial gain, only the knowledge that “all of our kids are going to be top performers.” Julia praised the teaching staff, saying that though the school has faced “huge financial barriers to success, the level of instruction our teachers are providing is top notch.”
According to Julia, this year only one other school in Calaveras County received this award; Hazel Fischer Elementary and no schools within Tuolumne County received the award.
