April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month – “It’s Not Worth It!”

 

Sacramento, CA

– In an effort to eliminate dangerous behind-the-wheel cell phone use and texting, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), California Highway Patrol (CHP), and more than 200 law enforcement agencies across the state today announced high visibility enforcement operations during April’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The overall goal of the increased enforcement is to convince drivers of the dangers of distracted driving and reduce the number of people impacted by this risky behavior. The “It’s Not Worth It!”theme emphasizes that a phone call or text isn’t worth a hefty fine or a collision.

For the second year in a row, Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) has received a generous $5000 donation from Save Mart Supermarket’s charitable organization, Save Mart CARES. These funds benefit the Career and Technical Training (C&TT) Scholarship Fund. At this level of donation, Save Mart moves into the ranks of a corporate partner and CCF is most grateful for Save Mart’s continued support.

Linda Stefanick - The Incredible Oz Behind Town Square Events

We have all enjoyed the multitude of events that are hosted or sponsored by the Copperopolis Town Square: Chili cook-offs, Dog day afternoons, Christmas wonderlands, Fall celebrations, Calaveras Arts Council music in the park, Classic Car Shows, September Music series, Parks and Rec movies under the stars or phenomenal Halloween experiences, but do we all know who coordinates these amazing events?

The incredible Oz behind the curtain at Town Square is none other than Linda Stefanick.

Linda has been with Castle & Cooke since 1999 filling many different shoes, from real estate sales and marketing to managing the Town Square website and organizing the ever growing list of events. Though her official title is Vice President, Sales and Marketing, she says with a smile, “if the trash needs emptying I will do that too.” Her chosen profession may be real estate sales but she may have missed her calling as a major event coordinator.

Frog Jump Youth Parade - brought to you by Soroptimist International of Calaveras County

Once again, Soroptimist International of Calaveras County invites the entire community to attend and participate in the Frog Jump Youth Parade.  This year’s kickoff to the Jumping Frog Jubilee will be Thursday, May 16, at 10:00 a.m. in Historic Angels Camp.

Individuals, families, and groups may participate in the parade.  Entry forms are available at the following locations:  Angels Sheet Metal, the Fairgrounds, and the Visitors Center in Angels Camp; Teddi Paul State Farm Insurance in Murphys; Barry Ward Realty in Arnold; Calaveras Telephone in Copperopolis; the Chamber of Commerce Office and Dave Bean Engineering in San Andreas; Maynard Management in West Point; and all County Library locations.

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  

New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,573,753 acre-feet of water. The lake level dropped close to one foot this week, and is currently at 1010 ft. above sea level and 77 ft. from full.  Water temperature is warming daily with the average being 54-56 degrees and some parts of the lake 58-60 degrees in the afternoon. The lake is clear, to slightly stained with some debris floating on the surface.

I have served on the Board of Copper Cove @ Lake Tulloch Owner's Association for almost 6 years, I have served in the capacity of the Board President and currently as Board Secretary.

I have been a homeowner in the Lake Tulloch community for 11 years and I have experienced the same challenges of many of my neighbors, some of them financial & some nuisance neighbors. Most of all, I have experienced & enjoyed the vacation style opportunities that living in the Lake Tulloch community offers to everyone "locals & visitors" alike

Copper Elementary looking for a track/field coach

Copperopolis Elementary School is looking for a track/field coach for our 2013 track season. The season is in April/May.  Practices are usually held after school from 2:30-4pm Monday thru Thursday.  There are usually about 4-5 meets and a couple are all day events.  Coaches would need to be fingerprinted, back ground checked, and have a recent (within 4 years) TB test.  There is a stipend available for this position.  If interested please contact Troy Welch at 209-559-4440.

Another great mruder mystery with a sold out crowd

Once again Micki and Larrys Sports Pub put on a fabulous murder mystery dinner show. The show was sold out weeks before the event and the crowd was dressed and ready to go.
The theme this time was pirate with many wenches and scallwags in attendence.
The goal was to figure out whodunit...the twists though were plentiful and hilarious.
Was it Captain Redbeard (Ralph Copeland) who was angered about mutiny rumors that killed his first mate Merciless Morgan (Gary Taylor)? Or was it the galley wench Gurglin' Uma Scar (Stacey Nolan) who didn't want to share any of the hidden treasure, the Merchant Sailor (Ken Osteen) who was desperately hiding his past as a pirate or the Governor of Port Royal (John Maness) who declared he would rid the port city of all pirates? Everyone had reason to want Merciless gone...yet there was only one killer.

The cast consisted of volunteer actors from all over Copperopolis wanting to join in an evening of fun and frivolity along with a little pillaging and plundering. Thanks to:

Free Fishing Seminar at Glory Hole Sports

Save the date of Saturday, April 6th, 2013 so you can attend our annual free fishing seminar.  From 8 am to 3 pm, fishing guides and  who are knowledgeable about all forms of freshwater fishing in our area will be on hand to teach you  their secrets.  Guides will have their boats and gear on hand so you can see how they rig up.  Format will be casual- you can walk around and talk to the guides that interest you, and ask any questions you may have.  

In addition, we are working on putting together some fun fishing-related games for kids and adults,  and we will award prizes.

Copper Scientists Bring Home the Gold - One Headed to State Science Fair

On March 23, 2013 three Copperopolis Elementary students participated in the County Science Fair and placed!

For fifth grade:
1st place Cooper Morlan with 'Wake Up and Smell the Acid' which brand of coffee is the most acidic.
3rd place McKenzie Blair with 'Grow so Mow' affects of light in front of the home and in the back of the home on plant growth.

And for sixth grade - who will go on to compete at the State level:

Tuolumne County's Most wanted for 3-25-13

The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department is asking for assistance in locating Walsh, Christopher John. He is a 41 year old white male, with shaved head and blue eyes. He is 5’ 05” and weighs approx. 150 pounds. He is wanted on Felony charges of Spousal Abuse, and misdemeanor charges of Obstructing/Resisting a peace officer and violation of a court order.

Please note that Christopher John Walsh is being sought to face these charges in court. He has not been convicted of these offenses.
