Leland Yee announces intention to run for Secretary of State in 2014

Senator Leland Yee, (D-SanFrancisco) announced his bid for the 2014 election for secretary of state. Yee penned the Senate Bill SB 397 'Online voter registration' which was signed in early October by Governor Brown. Yee also presented SB 1002 requiring that state and local agencies make their records available for public inspection by various methods, including the internet, which was vetoed by the Governor 9-28-12. Also penned in 2012 by Yee was SB 9, a youthful offender bill that would 'authorize a prisoner who was under 18 years of age at the time of committing an offense for which the prisoner was sentenced to life without parole to submit a petition for recall and re-sentencing to the sentencing court, and to the prosecuting agency, as specified.' This bill was signed by the Governor 9-30-12.

Secretary of State Debra Bowen will not be seeking re-election due to term limits.

Almost 1 million ballots in CA left to count

20 days after the election and there still remains 958, 311 votes in the state of California not yet counted. According to Secretary of State Debra Bowen Calaveras County completed their count on November 21, 2012, yet many counties have yet to complete their counts.

With approximately 12 million ballots cast in this last election the amount left to tally equals approximately 10 percent of the total ballots cast in California. This has led some to term election day as election week or election month. Some counties did complete their tallies yet did not report to the state in a timely manner, while this may have no effect on races with large margins the slow processing may have a negative effect on those closer races.

BOE George Runner representative press release re: Cyber Monday sales tax

George Runner today responded to confusion surrounding Cyber Monday sales and California’s new online sales tax law (AB 155) by clarifying that not all retailers must collect tax.

“Some reports have suggested that all online sellers must now collect California sales tax,” said Runner. “That’s a gross overstatement that creates needless confusion for both taxpayers and consumers.”

Sheriff Dept press release re: plane crash

On 11/23/2012 at approximately 1542 hours, the Calaveras County Sheriff Department was dispatched to a report of a plane crash 3/4 quarter miles south of Calaveras County Airport.
Deputies arrived on scene and confirmed there was a single occupant aircraft down. The occupant of that aircraft succumbed to his injuries on scene. The aircraft is described as an experimental aircraft. This case has been transferred to FAA and NTSB for further investigation. The Calaveras Sheriff Department has no further information at this time.

Community Garden receives grant funding

The Bill Albee Memorial Garden (Copperopolis Community Garden) received grant funding through the Calaveras Community Foundation to improve and enhance their community garden.

The grant monies will be used to build raised beds, which will help reduce access to the growing gopher population by using wire mesh at the base of each raised bed. It will also help hold in soils that are rich in nutrients. Some of the funds will be spend on irrigation and repairs on current irrigation.

Update on Little John Rollover

CHP has released the name of the victim in the Little John single vehicle accident that occurred 11-20-12. The driver is 49 year old Valerie Jean Maschal, listed in critical condition as of 5:30 pm 11-20-12.

According to CHP the driver, for unknown reasons, let her silver mustang veer from the road striking a boulder and flipping, trapping the driver inside.
The accident is still under investigation.

According to Chief Kovacs of CFPD the call was received at 9:18 am and CFPD emergency crews were on scene at 9:23 am.

Sonora PD Press release re: Sonora parade road closures and detours

Friday, 23 Nov. 2012, will mark the City of Sonora’s 29th annual Christmas Parade. This event always falls on the Friday following Thanksgiving Day and is attended by thousands of on lookers. The Sonora Police Department is tasked with traffic control and security for the parade.
The Sonora Police Department and the City of Sonora would like to remind everyone that the correct location for dropping off participants for the parade is on Shaws Flat Road, in front of Sonora High School. The participants can then walk across the campus to the staging area. Disabled participants may be dropped off at the intersection of South Washington and School Street.
“NO PARKING” will be allowed on Washington Street from the Red Church to Williams Street. The “NO PARKING” restriction will start at 2 pm on Friday, 23 Nov. 2012. If you park in this area the Sonora Police Department will attempt to contact you, so you can move your vehicle. Unfortunately, if you can’t be contacted or you can’t move your vehicle in a timely manner, your vehicle will be towed.

State Capitol tree lighting 12-5-12 press release

Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the 81st Annual Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, December 5th on the West Steps of the State Capitol.

This year's tree is a 50-foot tall white fir tree from the Latour Demonstration State Forest located near Redding in Shasta County and is the first Capitol Christmas tree from a state forest.

The tree will be decorated with hundreds of hand-crafted ornaments made by children and adults with developmental disabilities who receive services and support from the state’s development centers and 21 nonprofit regional centers.

Sheriff Dept Press release re: Update on Officer Involved Shooting in Arnold (3/15/12)

(Arnold, CA) On March 15, 2012, at approximately 0824 hours, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a possible robbery or burglary in-progress in the area of 731 Blue Lake Springs Road. A short time later CCSO Dispatch Center radioed to Corporal Oldham that a second reporting party, the driver of an Ebbett’s Pass Gas truck, reported that an adult male was walking around the subdivision with a gun. Additional calls were received that there was an adult male, later identified as Kevin Duey, lying on a roadway shooting a gun. Corporal Oldham arrived in the area and contacted the Ebbett’s Pass Gas driver, who confirmed that he saw and briefly spoke with a man who was holding a gun. The driver also reported that Suspect Duey put his arm around the driver’s neck from behind while waving a handgun in front of the driver’s face. The driver further stated that Suspect Duey appeared to be under the influence.

Little John vehicle accident 11-20-12

Update: 3:15 pm 11-20-12
CHP reports that the accident was a solo vehicle rollover, non fatality. Driver of the vehicle sustained major injuries. The cause is still under investigation. The hospital is attempting to contact family.
 
At  9:18 am on 11-20-12 a vehicle accident was reported on Little John Rd.
CFPD responded to the call on Little John approximately 2 miles south of Highway 4. It was a single vehicle rollover involving a Mustang with a female driver. The patient was medi flighted out.  
There are no further details at this time. 

Bret Harte Music Dept concert tonight! 11-20-12

Tuesday, November 20, the Bret Harte music department will hold its annual Sweet Sounds and Sweet Treats concert and dessert auction, a benefit for the Bret Harte music department. The concert starts at 6:30 and will be held in the theatre on the BHHS campus.

Chairs for Charity 2013

Chairs for Charity returns to Calaveras County on Jan. 26, 2013

San Andreas Town Hall is the venue for 2013’s event.  As in the past, attendees will enjoy a delicious buffet dinner, no-host bar with a special signature drink, live and silent auctions of creatively decorated chairs and/or chair-related items, an assortment of valuable raffle items to choose from, and an opportunity to participate in raucous rounds of Xtreme Musical Chairs.  Admission is $25 – advance ticket sales only. The Pickle Patch, San Andreas, will cater dinner and Mindi Bach will serve as our emcee and auctioneer.

Saddle Creek Residents produce a healthy food drive

The residents of Saddle Creek held a holiday food drive for the food pantry in the early weeks of November with emphasis on items that would help create a wonderful Thanksgiving feast.

The food drive was a success, as many pounds of food was collected and donated to the Copperopolis Food Pantry.

Women's Opportunity Awards program accepting applications

Soroptimist International of Calaveras County (SICC) is seeking applications for its Women’s Opportunity Awards.  The Women’s Opportunity Awards program was established in 1972 to assist women with the primary financial responsibility for their families to obtain the skills-training and education necessary to improve their employment status and standard of living for themselves and their family.  Each year, $1.5 million in club, region and international funds are awarded to more than 1,500 women in Soroptimist’s 19 member countries and territories.  The women receiving these financial awards may use them for any costs associated with their educational efforts, including tuition, books, child care, and transportation.  The chosen recipient of SI of Calaveras County will also be considered for additional awards at the regional and international levels. The application deadline is December 15, 2012.

Level 1 Tactical Handgun(approx. 6-8 hours). This is NOT a certified NRA course. This course takes off where Basic Pistol end’s. The students will expand on shooting positions, drawing from a holster,developing speed and accuracy, moving and shooting, reloading and malfunction drills. This class is 99% hands on learning. 250 rounds. Cost: $100.00.The next Level 1 Tactical Handgun class is scheduled for Fri. Nov 23, 2012.

Level 1 Tactical Rifle

(approx. 6-8 hours) This is NOT a certified NRA course. Whether you are running an AR-15, AK or anything in between, come out and learn how to defend yourself with a rifle. This course reviews the fundamentals of rifle shooting, accuracy and speed, reloading, immediate action drills (malfunction drills), use of cover and shooting on the move. This course is a blast! Bring 500 rounds of ammo. and knee pads. Prerequisite: NRA Basic Rifle, DD214 or demonstration of safe rifle handling. Cost: $100.00.  The next class is scheduled for Sat. Oct 27 and Sat. Nov 24, 2012.

New Melones Report

 Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,485,541 acre-feet of water. The lake level actually rose a little this week, and is currently at 1001ft. above sea level and 87ft. from full.  Water temperature has cooled a bit and is 58-61 degrees.  The lake is clear, to slightly stained. The lake will "turn over" when surface water cools to the same temperature as the deeper water- around 53-54 degrees. This usually happens around Thanksgiving, and then the trout bite really turns on for bank-anglers and trollers alike. Good news, the middle ramp on Glory Hole Point is open, which makes for an easy walk.
