San Andreas, CA – The leading cause of death for Americans 15-20 years old is motor vehicle collisions, (According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the CHP’s goal is to reduce the death rate among teenagers as the result of these collisions.

In order to address this alarming trend, the CHP developed a program called Start Smart. Start Smart is aimed at helping newly licensed and future licensed teenage drivers understand the critical responsibilities of driving and to understand that accidents do happen, but collisions are 100 percent preventable.

Highway Patrol (CHP) is reminding all motorists to ensure everyone inside their vehicle is buckled up, before heading out. Whether your travels take you across the country or just across town, buckling up is one way to help secure a safe arrival at your destination.

“Thanksgiving weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year,” said CHP Commissioner

Joe Farrow. “As the volume of traffic on the roadways increases so does the risk of being involved in a serious or deadly collision.”

CHP SAN ANDREAS UPDATE

San Andreas, CA – On September 27, 2013, The California Highway Patrol served an arrest warrant on Samuel Christian Knox, 23, of Burson.  Mr. Knox was located at his residence and was taken into custody at 1310 hrs. 

On July 5, 2013 at 0119 hrs, Mr. Knox was involved in a vehicle collision on South Camanche Parkway.  Mr. Knox was driving his Harley Davidson motorcycle behind his friend, Matthew Maddox, 23, of Burson.  Mr. Maddox was involved in a solo vehicle collision when he lost control of his motorcycle.  Mr. Maddox was ejected off his motorcycle and onto the roadway.  Mr. Knox, due to his level of intoxication, was unable to avoid a collision with Mr. Maddox, subsequently running over Mr. Maddox with his motorcycle.  Mr. Maddox sustained fatal injuries due to this collision.

Mr. Knox was placed under arrest for 191.5(a)PC – Felony Vehicular Manslaughter and 23153(a)VC – Felony Driving Under the Influence.  Mr. Knox was released to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Based on the Calaveras County Coroner report and the Department of Justice Forensic Alcohol Analysis, the Calaveras County District Attorney’s Office issued a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Knox.

SOBRIETY/DRIVER LICENSE CHECKPOINT

San Andreas, CA – On Friday, September 27, 2013, the California Highway Patrol San Andreas Area office conducted a Sobriety/Driver License Checkpoint on State Route 49 in Angels Camp between the hours of 8 pm and 12:30 am.  A total of 344 vehicles were screened.  10 drivers performed Field Sobriety Tests resulting in no arrests for driving under the influence. 2 person was cited for driving un-licensed.

CHP SEEKS OFFICER CANDIDATES DURING THREE-DAY APPLICATION PERIOD

CHP SEEKS REACCREDITATION
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is seeking to renew its
accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc.
(CALEA), three years after becoming the largest accredited law enforcement agency in the
nation.
“The California Highway Patrol’s participation in the accreditation process represents its strong
commitment to accountability and professionalism in public service,” said California State
Transportation Agency Secretary Brian Kelly.

CHP PARTICPATES IN NATIONWIDE I-80 CHALLENGE TO SAVE LIVES DURING SUMMERTIME TRAVEL

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is joining 10 other state
highway patrol agencies across the nation to participate in the “I-80 Challenge,” which sets a
goal of zero fatalities on the 2,900 miles of Interstate 80 from California to New York from July
24 through July 31 by enhancing traffic safety, enforcement and education along this section of
the National Highway System.
“We are excited to partner with our colleagues across the nation to improve safety along the
Interstate 80 corridor in California,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “California’s
highways are safer when everyone follows basic traffic safety rules: always wear a seat belt,
drive at a speed safe for roadway conditions, eliminate distractions while driving, and always
designate a sober driver.”

SOBRIETY/DRIVER LICENSE CHECKPOINT

San Andreas, CA – On Saturday July 20, 2013, the California Highway Patrol San Andreas office along with the Angels Camp Police Department will be conducting a Sobriety/Driver License Checkpoint.  The purpose of the checkpoint is to detect and deter DUI/unlicensed drivers.

The checkpoint will be staffed by officers of the California Highway Patrol and Angels Camp Police Department that are trained in the detection of alcohol and/or drug impaired drivers.  CHP and Angels Camp Police Drug Recognition Experts, certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will be on site to provide on the spot assessments of drivers suspected of drug use.  The officers will also be equipped with hand held breath testing devices which provide an accurate measure of blood alcohol concentration of those suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles, regardless of type, will be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs can be expected to be arrested and booked into the county jail.

NOTE:  The checkpoint will be operated in the Angels Camp area from 6:30 pm – 12:30 am.  The press may contact Stockton Dispatch Center at (209) 943-8600 after 1:00 pm on July 20, 2013, for the exact location of the checkpoint.

CHP press release re:new laws in effect January 1, 2013

MOTORISTS PREPARE FOR CHANGE WITH NEW LAWS
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – New rules that govern the California driving public will go in effect
on January 1, 2013. These rules are the product of legislation passed by the Legislature and
signed into law by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. in 2012.

“The changes to California’s traffic safety laws are designed to protect the motoring public,” said
California Highway Patrol (CHP) Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Citizens are encouraged to
familiarize themselves with these new laws in advance of the new year. Adhering to the rules of
the road may save your life, or the lives of your fellow motorists.”

The following are summaries of some of the new laws taking effect January 1, 2013:

CHiP's for Kids Toy Drive

San Andreas, CA – The California Highway Patrol and Santa’s Express are teaming up for the 15^th annual CHiPs for KIDS Toy Drive.  The toys will be given to hospitalized and disadvantaged children in Calaveras County just before the Christmas holiday.

CHiPs for Kids collection barrels have also been placed around the county at various locations.  Toys will be collected until Friday, December 14, 2012.  Collection barrels are at the following locations:
