On May 28, 2012 new burn hours go into effect for Calaveras County. There will be no burning between the hours of 8 am and 7 pm. Burning between the hours of 7 pm and 8 am are allowable on burn days ONLY and with a permit.

VFW Post 12118 invites the Community of Copper to a Memorial Day flag ceremony
At 8 am on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, VFW Post 12118 will be holding a flag ceremony at the Copperopolis Cemetery.
Following the short ceremony the veterans of the VFW will escort Copper Hills 4-H children and any community memebr wanting to participate to veterans graves within the cemetery to place an American flag at each veterans grave, honoring them on Memorial Day.

With April in the near distant past, two things come to mind: rattlesnakes and taxes.
What’s the difference between a bite from a rattlesnake and an audit
from the IRS? The snake bite might kill you, but an audit goes on
forever. Since an audit is such an unpleasant ordeal much
beyond our control, let’s focus on something we can control: treatment
for a venomous snake bite.
Snake bites aren’t funny; several people die from them each year, especially children. There
are four types of venomous snakes in this great country of ours, but we
only have to worry about one in Copperopolis—the rattlesnake. Although a
bite from a rattler may not kill a healthy adult, it can cause
extensive tissue damage. Besides, why suffer any injuries at all when
help is just a phone call away.
Should
you find yourself snake bit, the first thing to do is get away from the
snake. That’s probably why he bit you in the first place. Don’t try to
catch it or kill it, and “Don’t drive to the fire station,” says Joe
Butler, a paramedic with the Copperopolis Fire Department. The best
thing you can do is call 911, stop moving and keep the bite below the
heart.

Copper Fire semi-annual 'Fill the Boot' for the Food Pantry
On Saturday May 26, 2012, from 9 am to 1 pm the firefighters - both volunteer and paid staff - will be hosting the semi-annual 'Fill the Boot' campaign for the local food pantry at the Young's IGA parking lot.
Over the years the firefighters have raised enough money to help offset the cost considerably for the food pantry to help those in need, reach more persons, and afford them additional quality food products.

Calaveras Schools stay off the States second interim status report
While counties surrounding Calaveras; Tuolumne, Stanislaus and
Amador, all have schools listed on the State interim status report,
Calaveras remains financially stable by State guidelines.
The State interim status report is a listing of local educational agencies receiving negative and qualified certifications for fiscal year 2011-12 second interim. A negative certification is assigned to a local educational agency when it is determined that, based upon current projections, the local educational agency will not meet its financial obligations for fiscal year 2011–12 or 2012–13. A qualified certification is assigned to a local educational agency when it is determined that, based upon current projections, the local educational agency may not meet its financial obligations for fiscal year 2011–12, 2012–13, or 2013–14.

Federal funding to CCWD not trickling down to Copper
Recently CCWD received $2.1 million in State and Federal funds to improve safety and reliability for Calaveras Communities.
According to Director Dennis Dooley the federal funds that are to be received from the Federal Government have been earmarked "primarily for West Point and Vallecito systems. We also are to receive some grants for replacement of the redwood tanks in the Ebbetts Pass area based on concerns about the loss of these tanks in a forest fire." Currently Copperopolis will not see any upgrades or improvements from the 2 million in federal funding.
Of the 2 million in cost repairs, CCWD is required to pay for 150K in matching funds which will come out of Capital Improvement funds specifically designated for each system receiving repairs.

CPR class offered to the public
CPR Instructors Lena Rohrabaugh and Tasha Westberg are offering an
American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR and AED class at Copper School Sunday May 27, 2012 from 12-3pm. Cost $25.00. All proceeds will
help send the Copper Canyon Baptist Church youth group to Hume Lake Summer Camp. The cost for the camp is $470 for each of the 15 teens wanting to attend.

New Melones Fishing report from GLory Hole Sports
Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,879,246 acre-feet
of water. The lake level has dropped another 3 feet this week and is
currently at 1041 ft. above sea level and 47 ft. from full. Water temperature is in the upper 60s and low 70s, getting warmer every day. Lake is slightly stained, with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days.
Trout: The
bite slowed down a bit for the bank anglers, and continues to get
better for the trolling anglers. The best bite time has been in the
early morning and in the late afternoon. Mid-day the fish will be in
deeper/cooler water or near shade.

This is the time for any Director to ask that an item be considered in a
different order than listed below. New
items cannot be added to this agenda for deliberation or action, but may be
added to the agenda of a future meeting pursuant to Item # 10 below ( Identification of Items for Future
Meetings).
CCWD Director Dooley responds to Water Quality Control Board fine
On March 9, 2012 CCWD and Saddle Creek LP were issued a proposed civil liability in the amount of $48,000 by the Central Valley Water Board.
CCWD Director Dooley stated, with regards to the concerns of the sewer plant discharge, that "it seems that the two regulatory agencies that oversee and permit the discharge of treated effluent have issued conflicting requirements that was not previously caught by CCWD or either of the two regulatory agencies. Accordingly, CCWD cannot fulfill the requirement of one and not be in violation of the other. The issue was supposed to be held in abeyance while we worked this issue out, but the Water Quality Control Board still went ahead and issued a fine. We are working on getting a postponement while the three parties work this out satisfactorily to all parties."

Krista Maisch of Copper is 2012 Calaveras County co- Saddle Queen
At the 2012 Saddle Queen Competition, 16 year-old Krista Maisch of Copperopolis, won the reigning pattern and punctuality portions.

Harp of Valley Springs was crowned Saddle Queen, yet due to math errors early on in the contest the position
of Saddle Queen will now be held by both Krista Maisch of Copperopolis and Natalie Harp. The announcement of co-queens was made in the arena several times throughout the day on Sunday May 20, 2012 and confirmed with personnel from the Calaveras County Fair office on 5-21-12.
Maisch, excited to be co-queen, stated that Harp - her co-queen- was "very sweet and happy for me too. She is an amazing person." While thanking her sponsors for their generosity she give a heartfelt thanks to her mother "for always being there since the very beginning, she takes away her own time for me and that really touches me."

CHP releases frog jump weekend stats
CHP SAN ANDREAS FROG JUMP STATISTICS
San Andreas, CA – Between May 18th at 12:01 am to
May 20th at 11:59 pm, the San Andreas CHP handled 2 traffic
collisions, both were solo vehicles, one was a motorcycle, and none of the
collisions were DUI related. However, there
were 2 people arrested for Driving Under the Influence.
Peaceful weekend for local law enforcement
According to the Calaveras County Sheriff it was an extremely quiet frog jump weekend throughout the
county with "only 4 arrests made at the fair itself." Contrary to rumor the Lake Tulloch Resort Biker Bash was not shut down by the SO, "in fact we ended up pulling our deputies out early due to a lack of attendance" further stating that the event was "peaceful and quiet."

Assembly Democrats and Republicans Come Together in Effort to Save State Parks

SACRAMENTO - In
a strong showing of bipartisan strength, today members of the State
Assembly from both sides of the aisle stood together in support of major
legislation jointly authored by Democrats and Republicans that would
help rescue California state parks from financial paralysis and prevent
park closures.
Gov Brown announces appointments
Ronna Brand, 63, of Beverly Hills, has been appointed to the Structural
Pest Control Board. She is the founder and owner of Brand Realty. Brand
has been state director for the California Association of Realtors since
2006. She was president of Beverly Hills Greater Los Angeles
Association of Realtors in 2007 and was founder and owner of Bicoastal
Connections from 1980 to 1984. This position does not require Senate
confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Brand is a Democrat.

VFW veterans and CFPD Cadets restore Copperopolis Cemetery Flagpole
On May 17, 2012 members of the Copperopolis VFW Post 12118 and Copperopolis Fire protection District Cadets spent a morning repairing and erecting the Copperopolis Cemetery flagpole in preparation for the VFW Memorial Day flag ceremony to be held May 28, 2012 at 8 am at the Copperopolis Cemetery.
Earlier in the week Commander Gilbert and Quartermaster/Adjutant Ralph Murphy removed the existing pole in order to straighten, prime and re-thread it. With the help of Senior Vice Commander Bill Skellenger, the pole was threaded correctly and ready to paint and install.

Motorcycle down on Rock Creek 5-20-12
A single motorcycle accident occurred on Rock Creek Road at approximately 3:47 pm 5-20-12.
The patient, his name withheld, was transported via helicopter. The accident is under investigation.
