Copperopolis Community Food Pantry gives food and thanks

At the November 17, 2011 Copperopolis Community Food Pantry distribution so much more than food was given to those in need. Hope, love and the feeling of community were also handed out in large doses.

With the help of grant funding from the Calaveras Community Foundation and large donations from local businesses and private parties, the food pantry was able to give turkeys with all the trimmings to at least 50 food pantry recipients this week.

"Just 1/2 hour before we were to open a member of the community drove up and donated 12 turkeys!" Said one of the food pantry volunteers. Along with the 40 purchased with the grant funding and 8 received from IGA donations "there is a turkey for everyone" with a few left over for Christmas distribution.

Fire at Stallion destroys home

An emergency call went out at 0639 11-20-11 of a structure fire at Stallion and Pinto.
A total of six units responded including water tenders from Copperopolis Fire Protection District and Altaville Melones Fire.
According to CFPD the home was destoyed.
There were no occupants at the time.
Further details will be provided when the information comes in.

Frog's Tooth Vineyards set up fund for injured firefighter

The owners of Frog's Tooth Vineyards have set up a fund raising campaign for the injured CAL FIRE Firefighter, Captain Sue Arrouzet. Sue was injured from a partial collapse of a building during a structure fire 11-11-11 in Saddle Creek.

Copperopolis Town Square Announces Thanksgiving Weekend Events

(COPPEROPOLIS, Calif.) – Copperopolis Town Square – the events, shopping and entertainment gathering place in Calaveras County – announces its schedule of events for Thanksgiving weekend, including the annual “Tree Lighting” ceremony Friday, Nov. 25 from 5-7 p.m. and “Old Fashioned Holiday” festival Saturday, Nov. 26 from 12-7 p.m.

The “Tree Lighting” is one of the most anticipated events of the year, signifying the beginning of the holiday season in Copperopolis Town Square. As day turns to night, residents, visitors, store owners and their staffs will gather around the holiday tree in the center of the square and sing carols led by local favorite John Campanella and special guests. Complimentary hot chocolate and cookies will be served to all.

Book signing at Once Upon a Time 11-26-11

Once Upon a Time Mercantile will be hosting a booksigning event with author Charity Maness, featuring her latest non-fiction release, "It's Lonely Here in Hell" Love Letters from Nam. A true story based on letters written home to Michelle Piper from PFC James Dennis Piper.

  April 9, 1967, in a letter from Jim Piper to his young bride Michelle, he wrote, "I thank God each night for my wife and my life and also enjoy each breath that I take and praise every morning I wake up too. It means another day gone, another day I'm alive and another day closer to being home with my wife forever."

PFC James Dennis Piper was in killed in action two days later on April 11, 1967 in the jungles of Vietnam.

Injured Firefighter update

Captain Sue Arrouzet, 45 of Tracy, a CAL FIRE firefighter for 22 years assigned to the CAL FIRE Copperopolis Fire Station was injured in a structure fire at Saddle Creek on Friday November 11, 2011 due to a partial structural collapse. An announcement was made at the CFPD board meeting 11-18-11 that Sue is still in serious condition with a great possibility that she may be paralyzed, though this has not been confirmed with the CAL FIRE PIO (public information officer).
A prayer was said by Chaplain Father Jim Stout of the Church of the Ascension.
As more information comes in it will be posted. At this time there has been no mention of how citizens or the community can help Sue or her family. Please be assured that if and when that news becomes available the Copper Gazette will post immediately.

Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association Legislative Report card

Our report card is designed to help Californians gauge how their state representatives are actually performing on taxpayer-related issues.
The 2011 scores stem from 22 bills. This year we double-weighted two bills: ABX1 40 and Assembly Constitutional Amendment 6, as they represented a tax increase and a threat to Proposition 13 and the initiative process, respectively. Also for the first time, we did not give a score to a legislator. Since March, State Assemblyman Jeff Gorell (R-Ventura) has been serving our country overseas in Afghanistan and was unable to vote on many legislative bills.

Community Garden wants for your fallen leaves

The Bill Albee Community Garden would welcome donations of "Clean" (No twigs, rocks, garbage or pet "presents") leaves for spreading between the rows at the Community Garden as a path.

Bags of Clean leaves can be left by the gate.  Volunteers will then put them down between rows or into the compost as needed.
Since it is Fall this may be a good alternative to people wanting to clean up their fallen leaves who don't want to pay for green waste disposal.

The Garden is also always looking for compostable materials. They can be placed in the left bin of our compost area. (In the front right hand corner of the Garden)  Meat and Dairy products are not considered compostable.

Occupy Sonora - solidarity on a smaller scale

Sonora, CA-- In celebration of the two month anniversary of the Occupy Wallstreet movement, "Occupy Sonora" demonstrators were in Courthouse Park Thursday night.
The event which started at 5:30 pm in downtown Sonora, was part of Occupy Wall Street's "International Day of Action."
Around 50 people participated with signs and American flags protesting corporate greed and economic inequality.
According to the Occupy Sonora Facebook page, participants were also invited
to show solidarity with other Occupy Wall Street protesters nationwide who have been subject to police raids and injustice.

Governor Brown announces appointments

Ginevra Chandler, 57, of Ukiah, has been appointed chief counsel at the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Chandler has served as the chief counsel at the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection since 2005. She was a partner at Carter Behnke Oglesby and Bacik from 2001 to 2005 and deputy county counsel for the County of Humboldt from 1997 to 2001. Chandler received her Juris Doctor degree from Loyola Law School. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $118,164. Chandler is a Republican.

Update on trespassers at CDCR

According to Lt David Fish, PIO (public information officer), the morning of 11-17-11 trespassers outside the walls of the prison yet on prison property were apprehended by the CDCR(CA Dept of Corrections)  crisis response team (a tactical operations team) and booked into the Tuolomne County jail for the possession of controlled substances and attempt to smuggle the controlled substances into a State Prison.
Names of those arrested are not being released as an investigation is underway. Smuggling of controlled substances creates a "security risk to our facility" said Fish.

Lake Tulloch Resort Thanksgiving Day Feast 11-24-11

For those of you that love the feast, but don’t particularly enjoy the preparation or clean-up, the Lake Tulloch Resort might just be where you want to be this Thanksgiving.

The resort will be offering a sit-down five- course Thanksgiving Feast on Thanksgiving Day for only $15.95 per person, children under 12 pay their age. The menu includes Sage roast Turkey, Spiral baked ham, old fashioned mashed potatoes, apple walnut stuffing and all the traditional fixings, including sweet potatoes, cold pumpkin soup, cranberry sauce and more.  Berry Marscapone dessert and traditional pumpkin pie to finish the meal perfectly.

Operation Christmas Child - the gift of love to a child in need

On Sunday evening, 11-13-11 Copper Canyon Baptist Church held their Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Dedication Dinner. As a church they collected 202 shoeboxes.

Each shoebox is gifted to a child in need around the world. In the shoebox is toiletries, school supplies, toys, candy, and notes from the ones who sent the box. "The most important piece that is in the shoebox is the Gospel of Jesus in their language and picture form." Said Pastor Sean. Pointing out that they are distributed by local pastors. Once a child receives the box there are follow-up classes with those same children to share the Gospel more.

Many churches participate in this charitable event.

Town Square welcomes its newest attraction

On Wednesday November 16, 2011, Town Square welcomed its newest attraction...a 35 foot Christmas Tree.
The tree was brought in on a flat bed trailer and a crane was used to hoist the tree into place so that it could be placed in the special tree holder in the center of Town Square. A cherry picker will need to be used to decorate the enormous tree. Decorating of the Town Square and the tree is the job of Les Stanton. (Might want to give him some kudos for a job well done when you cross his path.)
A tree lighting ceremony is to take place November 25, 5-7 pm with live music by John Campanella, carols and hot cocoa.

Sheriff Dept press releases re:arrest intoxication and child endangerment

On 11-16-11 at about 2323 hours the Calaveras Co. Sheriff’s Department and the California Highway Patrol were dispatched to 7449 Esmeralda Drive, Angels Camp for a report a vehicle accident that resulted in a physical fight. Upon arrival, deputies discovered an intoxicated female driver (Jasmine Grant), two intoxicated passengers, and three young children all under six years of age. The investigation revealed that the male occupant of the suspect vehicle started a physical fight with an occupant of the crash victim’s vehicle. The suspect was restrained by the victim until he calmed down.
CHP arrived a subsequently arrested Jasmine Grant and charged her with driving while intoxicated and child endangerment (a felony). A second female, Elizabeth Grant (Jasmine’s sister-in-law), was arrested for public intoxication and child endangerment (a felony) due to her not properly securing her children in car seats, and riding with a driver whom she knew to be intoxicated.

Trespassers caught on Sierra Conservation grounds

11-17-11 Earlier this morning armed guards (in a special unit) were patrolling the grounds just outside of the Sierra Conservation Center on O'Byrnes Ferry Road after trespassers were caught on the CDCR grounds and detained.
Information will be released as it comes in.

Letters to Santa...at Once Upon a Time

Has your child written his/her letter to Santa yet? If they have, are you sure where to mail those letters?
Once Upon a Time in Town Square has a special mail box that sends letters via express mail to the North Pole, straight to Santa from your child.
Beginning Thanksgiving, your child's letters can be brought to Once Upon a Time and placed in the special mailbox for delivery to Santa.

Millar to take Oath of Office Friday night at CFPD Board meeting

At the August 11, 2011 Copperopolis Fire Protection Board of Directors meeting it was announced that the position of Fire Chief for the District had been offered to current CAL FIRE Deputy Incident Commander Jeff Millar. Millar currently resides in Calaveras County and has working knowledge of the area and its fire fighting needs and concerns. He has in excess of 25 years of firefighting experience and working knowledge of the internal workings of a fire district.

Jeff Millar began his fire fighting career in 1979 as a seasonal firefighter. By 1995 he had risen to the rank of Battalion Chief - Merced County Fire Marshal. In 1998 he became the Battalion Chief - San Andreas ECC (Emergency Command Center) managing the unit command, working with Legislators and establishing an ECC trainee program.  His skills not lost on those above him, he continued to rise to Division Chief - Baseline Conservation Camp in 2000 and in 2001 to Battalion Chief - Arnold Battalion.

His long list of qualifications include, but are not limited to, Incident Commander, Strike Team Leader, Fire Behavior Specialist.

Mr. Millar carries a B.S in Forest Resourse Managaement, receiving high honors from the University of Berkeley.

Copperopolis Food Pantry Distribution TODAY!!!

The Copperoplis Food Pantry will be making their monthly food distribution November 17, 2011 from 2-4 pm at 90 Rock Creek Rd.
Food is available for families and individuals that live in Copperopolis.

Inmate escape from Delta Conservation Camp outside of Suisun

Two Minimum security inmates escaped from Delta Conservation Camp which is located just outside of Suisun City, California.

The first Escapee is 29 years old Eduardo Hernandez described as a Hispanic male, 125 pounds, with brown eyes, black hair and medium complexion. He stands approximately 5’4 inches tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing Orange Blaze colored jeans, and Shirt with the initials C.D.C.R. prisoner written on the back. He was committed to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on July 21, 2005, from Los Angeles County for Carjacking. He was scheduled to be paroled in June 2016.

Snaps Veteran's Day book signing a heartwarming event

On November 11, 2011 at precisely 11 am, Snaps Coffee House and Wine Bar in Copperopolis Town Square hosted a book signing highlighting local author Charity Maness and her latest non-fiction release "It's Lonely Here in Hell" Love Letters from Nam.

"It's Lonely Here in Hell" is a collection of love letters written by James Dennis Piper, a soldier that was killed in action in Vietnam Aprill 11, 1967, to his young bride Michelle Piper. Each handwritten letter from Jim to Michelle has been carefully transcribed and historical documentation has been added. Cross referencing and correlating data from sources such as declassified CIA documents, Pentagon Papers and unrestricted use of Weider History Group archives has created a historically correct and profound journey through eight months of the Vietnam War.

Both Jim's younger brother Dennis and his widow Michelle (Micki) were at the event talking with people and listening to other's stories of loss and hope during that difficult time in our nations history.

The event was well attended and Sue and Randy Bresee, owners of Snaps and history buffs, clearly enjoyed hosting the event. They mingled, served, discussed and promoted, all while running a business.

Statement by Assemblymember Olsen on Legislative Analyst’s Budget Report

11-16-11 Assemblymember Kristin Olsen, R-Modesto,  issued the following statement in response to the release of the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s fiscal report for the upcoming fiscal year: “Today’s news that California will face a $13 billion budget deficit in the coming fiscal year underscores that this year’s budget was built on faulty assumptions.  Democrats and Republicans must begin working together immediately to prioritize spending in order to avoid further cuts to education and public safety.  We can identify solutions to get California back on track if we come together to work on bipartisan reforms and spending reductions.” Read the Legislative Analyst’s full budget report here.

State Christmas tree from our forest delivered via CAL FIRE to Scaramento 11-15-11

CAL FIRE delivered the State's Christmas Tree, a 60-foot Douglas Fir, to the State Capitol in Sacramento yesterday after its long journey from our forests.

Community Garden Harvest time

The community garden currently has tomatoes, a variety of peppers, and basil available for harvesting.  With the arrival of winter, these plants are destined to be tilled under, so please help yourself to this produce.
Note, that while most of the tomatoes are still green, they are still edible.
 
Classic Fried Green Tomatoes
    * 4 to 6 green tomatoes
    * salt and pepper
    * cornmeal
    * vegetable oil
Preparation:
   Slice the tomatoes into 1/4 - 1/2-inch slices. Salt and pepper them to taste.
   Dip in cornmeal and fry for about 3 minutes or until golden on bottom.
   Gently turn and fry the other side. Serve as a side dish - delicious with breakfast!
Besides using Basil for making pesto, Basil is a great addition to infused waters, so I have included some info below on that subject.
Making infused waters couldn't be easier! Cut up the ingredients to be infused into the water, fill a pitcher with cold water, add the cut-up ingredients to the pitcher of water, place in the refrigerator for 2-8 hours to chill and let the flavors infuse, serve and enjoy!  Try combining Basil with Berries, Cucumber, Lemon, Melon, or Pineapple.  Also try combining with slightly crushed Mint or Rosemary sprigs.

Apple Cranberry Stuffing

With Stonewall Kitchen Apple Cranberry Chutney

ingredients

• 1 one-pound loaf crusty bread (about 10 cups ½ -inch cubed)
• 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1-cup onion, ¼-inch diced
• ½ cup celery, ¼-inch diced
• 1 jar Stonewall Kitchen Apple Cranberry Chutney
• 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1/2 teaspoon dried sage)
• 1-tablespoon fresh thyme, (or ½ teaspoon dried)
• 1-teaspoon salt
• ½ teaspoon fresh ground pepper
• 1 ¼-1½ cups chicken stock
