4th annual Live-On Suicide prevention walk-a-thon - a moving experience
Many people gathered together on Saturday September 14th to support the efforts of Live On - suicide prevention and awareness.
Last year in Calaveras County there were 15 confirmed suicides, just over 100 in the last ten years. Calaveras County exceeds twice the national average.
Live On promotes suicide prevention and awareness through community outreach by providing suicide prevention information and training as well as survivor assistance. The 2nd Monday of each month a survivors support group meets at Refuge Church (642 Murphys Grade Road) to meet with peers who have lost loved ones to suicide.
Photos in memory of those lost.
The shoes lining the track were a reminder of those that have lost their
lives to suicide in Calaveras County in the last ten years.

3rd Annual Suicide Prevention Walk-a-thon a moving experience
When Live On organizers Kim Carnes Molina and daughter Amber Chambers lost Junior - their son and brother - they turned their personal tragedy into an effort to save others and help heal those that have survived.
This year was Live On's 3rd Annual Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk-a-thon. Monies raised from the walk-a-thons help with the cost of outreach and the two support groups held once a month each. One group is for anyone who has lost someone to suicide and the other is for people who have the ideation of suicide. The meetings are held the second Monday of the month. FOr those who lost someone the meetings are held at 5:30-6:30 and those with ideation held at 6:30 -7:30 at the Refuge church in Angels, behind BHHS.
Local author and survivor Charity Maness spoke at the onset of the walk-a-thon relating her story of loss and the need to embrace Live-On's philosophy of 'breaking the silence and stigma associated with suicide.'
This year to date in Calaveras County there have been 15 confirmed suicides, 99 in the last ten years. Calaveras County exceeds twice the national average.
The 99 shoes symbolize the 99 suicide deaths in Calaveras County in the last 10 years.
Kim Carnes Molina and Amber Chambers in front of last years signature quilt, where those who lost a loved one to suicide can sign their name and leave a message.

A Mother and Daughter Turn Tragedy into Hope For Others
On January 19, 2001 Kim’s life as she knew it had changed forever. On that day her son Ron Wayne, known as Junior, took his life.
Though Junior’s life had been somewhat difficult due to his undiagnosed ADHD, he was still loved by all that met him and a “charismatic charmer.” When he had his difficult times many would tell Kim to ‘be tougher on him, give him more structure’ “but anyone with a child with ADHD knows that discipline that works with ‘normal’ kids does not work with a child dealing with ADHD.” Instead Kim learned that unconditional love worked best.
Junior’s younger sister Amber never thought of her brother as different. She idolized him. She remembers when he would give her a gift he would be so excited to give it to her that he would take it from her to show her how it worked, and in his excitement almost always would break the gift. She didn’t get angry, that “was just my brother” she said, “besides I got caught up in his excitement” of gift giving too.
Amber said on that January day, “I not only lost my brother, I lost my mother too.”
