California Professional Firefighters announced its support for Governor Jerry Brown's call for a special election this June to allow California voters to ratify his plan to close a $26 billion budget shortfall.
"The impact of California's fiscal crisis ia already being felt in our fire stations, our classrooms and our communities," said Lou Paulson, president of California Professional Firefighters. "With California's future at stake, the voters deserve the chance to be heard."
Under the governor's proposal, half of the state's budget gap would be closed by deep, difficult spending cuts. Voters would then be asked in June to approve a five-year extension of temporary sales and income taxes enacted in 2009.
"Governor Brown's budget plan is a painful, but honest effort to close the state's budget gap without gimmicks or games," noted Paulson. "California voters understand what's at stake. They deserve to have the final say."
