Happy Yule and the Yule Log recipe

Yule and the Winter Solstice go hand in hand with each generation changing the celebration of the season just a tad. Dating to the 6th or 7th century a Yule log was a large and very hard log which was burned in the hearth as a part of traditional Yule celebrations in several European cultures.

This recipe is a tasty example of one of the many changes.

Ingredients
Cake:

1 pre-made chocolate jelly roll cake

Filling and frosting:

1 (16-ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Cocoa powder, for dusting

Forest Mushrooms:

10 miniature marshmallows
10 chocolate kiss candies, unwrapped
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
Special Equipment: 10 toothpicks

French Flat Frisbee Golf Sunday, Dec. 22, 10 a.m. French Flat Come out for the fun of our first-ever Frisbee Golf interpretive program! Rangers will set a course filled with clues about the natural and cultural history of New Melones Lake. Hit the targets, gain the clues and answer the questions to win a prize! This will be a 9-hole course set in the rambling oak woodlands of French Flat. Participants will be walking through tall grass, so long pants and your own Frisbee are required. We will meet at the corner of Shell and Rawhide Roads at 10 a.m. and then caravan down to French Flat for a great game of Frisbee Golf!

Angels Camp PD press release re: 21 Year Old San Andreas Resident Arrested for Multiple Sexual Assault Charges

On December 17, 2013 the Angels Camp Police Department was contacted regarding the sexual assault of a juvenile victim. It was reported that the juvenile victim had been sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of the victim’s family and that the suspect had left the area.

Upon further investigation, the Angels Camp Police Department identified the suspect as 21 year old, San Andreas resident, Jason David Anthony Roberts. Roberts was contacted on December 18, 2013 at approximately 6:15 pm in 3000 block of Hwy 49, in San Andreas.  Roberts confessed to the investigating officers that he sexually assaulted the child and was subsequently arrested. He was booked at the Calaveras County jail for the following charges:

County Schools Donate Food Items to Resource Connection

In an effort to provide a donation to the Resource Connection Food Bank, the Calaveras County Office of Education reached out to county schools asking for donations of canned and non-perishable food items. We received generous donations from Kathi Grover’s class at Albert Michelson School, Jacey Bray’s class at Bret Harte High School, and Jane Ferguson’s class at Mountain Oaks School.

No Seasonal CalFire stations re-opened for high wind fire risk

CalFire issued a press release 12-18-13 concerning the forcasted winds for the area creating an increased fire threat.
According to CalFire PIO Lisa Williams from Tuolumne/Calaveras Unit no seasonal stations will be re-opened for the potential increased fire threat due to the forecasted high winds, yet staff has been preparing for the possibility throughout the week and is "prepared  to respond to any incidents within the unit or throughout the state should the need arise."

Copper folks and more help Resource Connection to make Santa Express a success - to feed 1300 families

The Resource Connection Food Bank to feed 1300 families this Holiday Season.

The Resource Connection, Calaveras County’s  only food bank, serves twelve community food pantries throughout the county with an estimated 1300 families expected to take part in the Santa’s Express dinner and toy distribution to be held December 20, 2013 in San Andreas, West Point, and Murphys.

With the Santa’s Express food drive almost complete the job of providing for those less fortunate has only just begun as volunteers throughout the county have been and will be working all week long packing food bags and sorting foods and toys for the upcoming event.

Food distribution at the bank is throughout the month yet the bank will be closed for normal business on the day of the Santa Express. Those who signed up for the Santa Express will be able to “drive thru the food bank” and be treated to a turkey or a ham as well as a bag full of all the necessary fixin’s to make any holiday meal complete.

CHP press release re: ‘TIS THE SEASON FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY MEP to begin 12-24-13

The California Highway Patrol prepares for its annual holiday enforcement effort SACRAMENTO, Calif. – As Californians ready for their holiday travels, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is set to begin its annual Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP). The two-day holiday enforcement effort is designed to help ensure the safety of the motoring public during a time when celebrations are

in full swing.

The MEP begins at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 24, and continues through 11:59 p.m. on

Wednesday, December 25. The effort coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s ongoing Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over anti-driving under the influence (DUI)

campaign, which began on December 13, 2013, and continues through January 1, 2014. 

CAL FIRE Prepares For Forecasted Winds & Increased Fire Threat

Sacramento– Although Christmas is just around the corner, CAL FIRE firefighters are preparing for

several days of extreme fire weather in Northern and Central California. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the next few days spanning from Northeastern California, the Sacramento Valley, Lake County, Inyo County, Mono County, and the eastern slopes of the Coast range. With the heightened fire danger and increased potential for new fires, CAL FIRE is placing additional firefighters on duty to staff extra equipment in the areas affected.

"The forecasted high winds coupled with the extremely dry weather and vegetation highlight the fact that conditions exist for large fire potential year round in California," said Chief Ken Pimlott, Director of CAL FIRE. "We've staffed additional equipment and are holding personnel on duty to address this increased threat. Don’t let the calendar fool you; with the dryweather, the public needs to understand that the fire threat still exists in many areas of the state and that everyone must take extra precautions to prevent sparking a wildfire.”

When he arrives, Santa offers the boy any gift he desires. The boy modestly asks for one bell from the harness of the reindeer. The gift is granted. On the way home the bell is lost. On Christmas morning, the boy finds the bell under the tree. The mother of the boy admires the bell, but laments that it is broken, for you see, only believers can hear the sound of the bell. In strange and moving shades of full color art, Chris Van Allsburg creates an otherworldly classic of the Christmas season.

Sierra Rep Begins Youth Program with Amazing Production of 'Jason and the Argonauts' by Shari Schweigler

“Wow!” and “Awesome” were the words young audience members used to summarize their experience of a December 14^th performance of “Jason and the Argonauts,” the inaugural production of Sierra Repertory Theatre’s new youth program. Though this production has closed, there’s a lot more “Wow” to look forward to, with workshops beginning in January for ages 4 to 18.

The classic Greek myth that tells the story of the Golden Fleece was done with original song and contemporary allusion. Ralph Krumins’ script and score brought to life the 3000-year-old tale by Appollonius Rhodius in an updated version for audience members, ages 4 to 104. 

Amid the action and excitement enhanced by music and well-lit backdrops, Krumins emphasized admirable ideas for young people to digest, such as how much more important it is for you to use your mind than a sword. One song about “brand new heroes” reminded us that the world always needs a new supply of the brave, the true, and the willing. Another made the point that you could still be a hero even when no one knows your name.

Food Pantry repaired in time for distribution

During the last winter storm The Bridge, home to the Copperopolis Food Pantry, suffered some major water damage and flooding. With the interior dried out and the floors cleaned it was time to put everything back into place so distribution on the 19th can go smoothly.

Enter Pastor Sean, David and Lorraine Crawford, Dave and Mary Montini, Al and Sandi Gilbert, and Copper Fire Explorer Marshall Maness. Within minutes the freezers full of holiday turkeys and hams were back in  place and the shelves holding hundreds of pounds of canned goods were snugly placed back against the wall.

On Sunday December 15, 2013 the newly formed, and extremely active, Cub Scout Pack 347 collected 15 bags of food and $20 in donations!

There has been some concern expressed about a child possibly being bitten by a rattlesnake at Mark Twain School 12-17-13. According to a representative from the school administration the call was false, the child was not bitten nor was the child transported.

13 December 2013, at approx. 1:58 am, an Officer stopped a Toyota Camry on the 700 block of S. Washington Street for a mechanical violation. The officer contacted the driver and the passenger who were identified as Richie Naval, 37 of Modesto and Sylvia Naval 33 of Modesto.
The officer asked them if they were on probation and both subjects denied being on probation. A records check revealed that they were both on searchable probation out of Stanislaus County as the result of theft convictions.

9 December 2013, several commercial burglaries were reported to the Sonora Police Department and the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department. One businesse in Sonora and one in Jamestown had surveillance video of the responsible, which was taken during the commission of the burglaries. Upon viewing the surveillance video, the suspect was identified as Derek Helfrich, 18 of Jamestown.
During the next two days, the Sonora Police Department, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol and Tuolumne County Probation Department searched several locations in an attempt to locate Helfrich, with negative results.

The December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. In other words, it is when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun. Depending on the Gregorian calendar, the December solstice occurs annually on a day between December 20 and December 23. On this date, all places above a latitude of 66.5 degrees north (Arctic Polar Circle) are now in darkness, while locations below a latitude of 66.5 degrees south (Antarctic Polar Circle) receive 24 hours of daylight.

The sun is directly overhead on the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere during the December solstice. State Controller releases 2012 Calaveras County Government Compensation

 State Controller John Chiang has updated his public employee compensation website with the latest wage and benefit data for California city and county employees. The site – publicpay.ca.gov – offers maps, search functions, and custom report-building tools. It also allows users to download raw data for their own research. This update covers calendar year 2012, the fourth full year of data for city and county employees available on the site.

"Making compensation of public employees transparent provides taxpayers with the ability to be more informed and active in local government decisions," Chiang said. "I'm especially encouraged with the cooperation that cities and counties have provided in helping us make all government more accountable to Californians."

Today's update adds wage and benefit data for 637,435 positions, with more than $38.86 billion in wages paid in 2012.

Since the site's launch in 2010, it has registered more than 6.9 million page views online. The Controller completed an overhaul of the public website in late 2012, adding additional search, browse, and mapping functions.

Special district information will be updated this coming spring, and data from the University of California is expected later in the year. The 2012 figures for State and California State University employees were updated earlier this year.

Back by popular demand, our 4th Annual Caroling in the Cave Concert at Moaning Cavern on Friday, December 20th at 6pm features the talented local choir Jazz@8 from Summerville High School. Beautifully arranged carols sung a cappella in multi-part-harmony come to life in this spectacular environment with its incredible natural acoustics.

Foothill Village Veterans Honored with handmade teddy bears from Copperopolis VFW Post 12118

At a luncheon for Veterans on Veterans Day hosted by Foothill Village, 13 veterans in residence received handmade teddy bears from the VFW Post 12118 of Copperopolis. 
Each teddy bear was carefully made by the VFW Post 12118 Ladies Auxiliary from the material of uniforms corresponding to the service of each veteran.

At the last Lake Tulloch Lions Club meeting of 2013 the Lions recognized the veterans of VFW Post 12118, thanking them for their service to our country and to the community.

GRANT HELPS CHP REDUCE DUI COLLISIONS, SAVE LIVES

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is enlisting the assistance of a federal grant to help turn up the heat on impaired drivers throughout the state. More than 1,000 people in California are killed in collisions every year because of an impaired driver. To help save lives and combat driving under the influence (DUI) offenders, the CHP was awarded a federal grant by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

To date 6750 is the number of Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn casualties as confirmed by U.S. Central Command.
