CHP SENIOR DRIVING CLASS AIMS TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE

growing driving-age demographics in the state. It is estimated, there will be over six million
residents age 65 and older in California by the year 2020. Knowing that much of this community

Saddle Creek Garden Club and Community Beautify Copper School

What has been a two year effort to beautify the front grounds of Copper school finally came to fruition on March 23, 2013 when 25 members of the Saddle Creek Garden club, the community, the school and youth came together to plant 182 plants on the slope by the bus pick-up/drop-off. What once was a section of rocky land filled with goat head plants and other weeds is now a lush evergreen garden filled with Nandina, spira deponica, juniper and some rosemary. All plants were considered for their safety. Plants that drew bees were avoided, unless planted far away from the student waiting area, as were trees that could block the view of the school from the road and the view of the waiting students from the school grounds.

The Buddy Holly Story

Born: Charles Hardin Holley (Buddy changed it to Holly when on an ad it was misspelled and he kept that version)

Director:  Excellent Choice in Primary Cast and ensemble crew.  Production depicted the era changes
with decent accuracy as well as showing the steadfastness of Buddy character.  (Stubborn)

The stage set was cleverly created to allow for quick and graphic settings from stages to sound studios giving the audience a true flare for the nuances of show biz back then.  i.e. dated props, reel to reel recorders.  Big microphones for vocalist.  A radio sound booth for radio announcer "HiPockets Duncan" was a special touch.

Tuolumne Sheriff Dept press release

Sheriff James W. Mele has been appointed to the Governor’s State 911 Advisory Board. Sheriff Mele believes this is a great opportunity for rural areas, such as Tuolumne County, to be represented throughout California. It is easy for large metropolitan areas to become the focus and to consume the available funding associated with the 911 system. Tuolumne County and other rural areas deserve the same considerations.

      The Advisory Board looks at issues within the 911 system and makes recommendations on how to upgrade and integrate the system; for better overall communication among all emergency services.

 James Mele, 51, of Sonora, has been appointed to the State 9-1-1 Advisory Board. Mele has been Sheriff of Tuolumne County since 2006. He has served in various positions at the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office since 1988, including narcotics commander, sergeant, detective, narcotics investigator, patrol deputy and jail deputy. He is a member of the California State Sheriffs’ Association, the Sonora Regional Medical Center Civic Advisory Board and the Tuolumne County Suicide Prevention Task Force. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Mele is a Republican.

Copper Scientists heading to County Science Fair

Three Copperopolis Elementary 5th graders will be heading to the County wide science fair this weekend with their winning science projects.

First place went to McKenzie Blair for "Which plant will grow faster? One in the front yard or one in the backyard?" Using tomatoe plants McKenzie and her parents planted a plant in the front and in the back. McKenzie hypothesized that the one in the back would grow faster because it had more sunshine and she was correct.

McKenzie's favorite subject in school is science and her hobbies are gymnastics and rock collecting. She loves working in the yard with her parents.

Federlein Family Fund Donates to Calaveras Community Foundation

Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) has been the recipient of over $63,000 in the past three years from The Federlein Family Fund at the San Francisco Foundation specifically to benefit area seniors.  An additional generous grant of $15,000 received earlier this year has jump started CCF’s 2013 fundraising efforts and will support our ongoing senior initiative.

Mark Twain 7th and 8th graders ROCK the honor roll

On Friday March 15th 122 of the 180 enrolled 7th and 8th graders at Mark Twain Jr. High achieved Honor Roll, which is a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

When asked about this incredibly high number, Principal Kevin Triance had this to say, "We have great teachers in our middle school. They work and think as a team and that is the big difference between our school and others.  They do not allow students to slip through the cracks and are very attentive to individual needs. We also have terrific parent support in which makes our jobs easier."

More than half of the 7th and 8th grade population at Mark Twain Jr High is from Copper.

Our fiscal problem can be summed up in just three numbers: 39, 37 and 64.  39 percent is the combined increase of inflation and population over the past ten years.  37 percent is the increase in revenues.  

 

The third number is killing us: 64 percent is the increase in spending – nearly twice the rate of inflation and population growth.

 

Assembly Member Bigelow Honors 4-H Centennial Anniversary

SACRAMENTO – Yesterday, Assemblyman Frank Bigelow (R-O’Neals) received unanimous support for HR 12, honoring California 4-H’s Centennial Anniversary. Dedicated to preparing new leaders in both rural California and throughout the state, Assemblymember Bigelow issued the following statement upon passage of the resolution:

 

“For 100 years, the 4-H program has been providing important leadership development services to California’s youth, allowing them to pledge their heads to clearer thinking, their hearts to greater loyalty, their hands to larger service and their health to better living. Food Pantry Distribution TODAY!! 3-21-13

The Copperopolis Food Pantry distribution for March will be on the 21st. from 1-4 pm at Lake Tulloch Bible Church. To be involved in the food pantry call David and Lorraine Crawford at 785-5367.

There is also a distribution of clothing for free by the Copper Closet a ministry of the Copper Canyon Baptist Church.

Saddle Creek Garden Club looking for few good volunteers

The Saddle Creek Garden Club has 20 yards of Gorilla Hair mulch being delivered on Friday to Copperopolis Elementary for their beautification project and will need some help in getting it spread - after 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday and first thing Sunday morning.

Calaveras County Science Fair

Calaveras County students in grades four through twelve, who are recommended by their school, or who have won at their school’s Science Fair, will be participating in a countywide Science Fair to be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Sponsored by the Teichert Foundation and the Calaveras County Office of Education, this is the 28th Annual Calaveras County Science Fair, which will be held in the Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks School gymnasium at 150 Old Oak Road, San Andreas, CA.
