Ric Ryan still walking for Operation Mend

In the fall of 2010, what began as a desire to get out and to exercise and a dream to eventually see the Vietnam wall in Washington DC turned into a journey of a lifetime for Marine Vietnam Veteran Ric Ryan.

Realizing the clock was ticking on the possibility of actually seeing the Vietnam wall in his lifetime, Ric - with the aid of his son - developed a map with exact mileage to walk to the Wall. Once the map was complete Ric realized how massive the endeavor was he wished to undertake and that he could not possibly make that trek, so he settled with walking locally and tallying the miles until he reached the number required to make it to the wall.

Quickly people would recognize Ric as he walked and honk or wave. Ric took this as a sign and began to tally each wave. At the end of each walk he would deposit a quarter in a jar for each wave he received on his walk. Within a month or two he knew he needed to find a home for the funds he was raising and his first thought was to help veterans. After seeing a program on Operation Mend, a joint UCLA and Brown University program that rebuilds not only an injured veterans face and body but their spirit too, Ric knew he had found his match.

CHP READIES FOR ITS ANNUAL HOLIDAY ENFORCEMENT EFFORT - press release

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – With holiday celebrations in full swing, the California Highway Patrol
(CHP) is preparing for increased enforcement throughout the heavy travel period to help ensure
safety on the road. The CHP is reminding travelers to play by the rules behind the wheel:
buckle up, adhere to the posted speed limit, avoid distractions behind the wheel, and never drive
while impaired.
The CHP’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” holiday enforcement effort begins Friday,
December 21 at 6 p.m. and continues through Tuesday, December 25 at 11:59 p.m. During this
Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP), all available officers will be out on the roadways for
enhanced enforcement efforts and assisting motorists wherever needed.

Senator Gaines Press release re: Prop 30

January 1^st marks the New Year and also the day that hundreds of new California laws go into effect. One of those laws that will impact your daily lives is the Proposition 30 sales tax increase, approved by voters in November.

In addition to raising income taxes on Californians earning more than $250,000 a year, Proposition 30 increases the sales tax one quarter of one percent (0.25%) from 7.25 percent to 7.50 percent on January 1, 2013.

MOTORISTS PREPARE FOR CHANGE WITH NEW LAWS
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – New rules that govern the California driving public will go in effect
on January 1, 2013. These rules are the product of legislation passed by the Legislature and
signed into law by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. in 2012.

“The changes to California’s traffic safety laws are designed to protect the motoring public,” said
California Highway Patrol (CHP) Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Citizens are encouraged to
familiarize themselves with these new laws in advance of the new year. Adhering to the rules of
the road may save your life, or the lives of your fellow motorists.”

The following are summaries of some of the new laws taking effect January 1, 2013:

New Melones Fishing Report from Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,554,207 acre-feet of water. The lake level rose about a foot this week, and is currently at 1009ft. above sea level and 79ft. from full.  Water temperature has cooled a bit and is 54-56 degrees.  The lake is clear, to slightly stained. The lake will "turn over" when surface water cools to the same temperature as the deeper water- around 53-54 degrees. This usually happens around Thanksgiving, few weeks late this year. Soon the trout bite should really turns on for bank-anglers and trollers alike. Good news, the middle ramp on Glory Hole Point is open, which makes for an easy walk.

Trout: Good. Department of Fish and Game is now planting rainbow trout weekly at New Melones.

Sheriff Dept press release re: Possible Door to Door Scam for Magazine Sales

On 12-12-12, the Calaveras Sheriff’s Office received several reports from different residents around the San Andreas area regarding subjects, described as being in late teens to early twenties, soliciting magazine sales to earn points or pay for college. In one instance, a victim gave one of the subjects $69 with the thought the subject was going to return in an hour. The victim never saw the subject again.

On 12-13-12, the Sheriff’s Office received a similar report of subjects soliciting magazine sales in the area of Daphne Street in Valley Springs. Sheriff’s Deputies searched the area, but were unable to locate the individuals. The reporting party in Valley Springs was concerned due to the subject persistently trying to talk them into letting him into the house.

Keith Anderson appointed to CFPD Board of Directors

At the December 13, 2012 CFPD (Copperopolis Fire Protection District) Board meeting the board of directors publicly interviewed three people that had submitted letters of interest for the board position left vacant by Barbara Cheney when she resigned, effective November 30, 2012, stating a need for more family time.

Retired firefighter Jim Perry, retired school teacher Eileen Taufer and retired Calaveras Sheriff Captain Keith Anderson all submitted letters of interest for the vacant board position. One other letter was submitted but withdrawn the morning of the 13th soon after the applicant was informed that interviews would be public. According to Chief Kovacs County Counsel had informed him that the interviews were not allowed to be completed in closed session.

Most 911 Cell Phones Calls made in Copper are routed through Stockton CHP dispatch

According to Chief Kovacs of Copperopolis Fire Protection District all 911 calls made in Copperopolis are routed through the Stockton CHP dispatch center. From there the calls are routed to the Calaveras County Sheriff Dept PSAP (public safety answering point). From there the calls are dispatched to proper emergency channels. Fire calls dispatch to CalFire ECC (emergency command center) and ambulance calls are dispatched through the PSAP.

Kovacs stated that depending on the call volume the incoming 911 call may be received and heard at the same time by both PSAP and CalFire ECC increasing the speed with which emergency response crews are toned out.

Sawmill Project makes headlines once again

Advocates and opponents of Copperopolis’ long-in-the-works Sawmill Lake housing development will square-off for a second planning commission hearing this week, renewing a raucous four-hour back-and-forth between developers and county staff at Sawmill’s first commission hearing in September.

That meeting saw Sawmill developers win a 90-day continuance for further deliberation on the project, one commissioners issued while hoping to broker a compromise between county planners and project developer Castle and Cooke Calaveras.
Three months on, the yawning gap between the two sides has only widened, according to area Sierra Club representative Steve Elias.
Elias, one of several Sawmill opponents organized under the Calaveras Planning Coalition, has joined county Planning Director Rebecca Willis in asking commissioners to deny the proposal “without prejudice,” a decision that would leave the door open to future development once planners complete an overhaul of the county’s decades-old general plan.
He, like Willis, fears the general plan amendment currently sought by developers to finish the 800-home subdivision could slow already creaky progress on the county land use map.

Tuolumne Sheriff press release re: 3 month old child pronounced dead, DA amending charges against father of child

UPDATE regarding the condition of the 3 month old child.

       On 12-11-12 at 2217 hours, the 3 month old child was pronounced dead by doctors at Oakland Children’s Hospital.  An autopsy has been scheduled.

       Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Detectives and Coroners are working together with Alameda County Corner regarding the autopsy. 

       Based upon the new information the Tuolumne County District Attorney is considering amending the charges against Kevin Boehmer. 

       The investigation is ongoing.

The holiday season festivities bring an increased excitement about adorning homes with traditional decorations, but as beautiful as they are, holiday decorations are an added home fire hazard. CAL FIRE and firefighters across California are asking the public to give their families and themselves the most important holiday gift: a fire safe holiday.

Gov Brown diagnosed with Prostate Cancer - press release

The Governor’s Office today announced that Governor Brown is undergoing treatment for localized prostate cancer.

Dr. Eric Small, Brown’s oncologist at UCSF, issued the following statement: “Fortunately, this is early stage localized prostate cancer, which is being treated with a short course of conventional radiotherapy. The prognosis is excellent, and there are not expected to be any significant side effects.”

Governor Brown is continuing a full work schedule during the treatment, which is expected to be completed the week of January 7, 2013.

(San Andreas, CA) On 12/12/12 the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of a possible phone/internet scam. According to the information provided to the sheriff’s office, a person with heavily accented English places phone calls to potential victims and identifies him/herself as being from a company by the name of Microsoft: VTech Solutions. This person then tells you that they have received information from your computer that there is a problem with your computer’s Microsoft programs. They then ask for personal information to access your computer.

Sheriff Dept Press release re: Murphys 1991 Fire Investigation Reopened

(San Andreas, CA) On November 26, 2012, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office was notified that investigators with the Seneca County Sheriff’s Department in New York were investigating a homicide in their jurisdiction. They alerted Calaveras County Sheriff’s detectives that the New York homicide case may have ties to a 1991 Murphys fire where a woman was killed. In 1991, upon completion of a house fire investigation by the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and the California Department of Forestry arson investigators, the death of Christina Karlsen was determined to have been an accident.

On this day in History -12-11-1941 - Hitler Declares War on the United States

On this day, Adolf Hitler declares war on the United States, bringing America, which had been neutral, into the European conflict.

The bombing of Pearl Harbor surprised even Germany. Although Hitler had made an oral agreement with his Axis partner Japan that Germany would join a war against the United States, he was uncertain as to how the war would be engaged. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor answered that question. On December 8, Japanese Ambassador Oshima went to German Foreign Minister von Ribbentrop to nail the Germans down on a formal declaration of war against America.
