Public education campaign highlights the proper use of 9-1-1

"The Calaveras County Sheriff's Department is teaming up with the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to begin a pilot public education campaign aimed at reducing the number of non-emergency 9-1-1 calls placed to the 9-1-1 system. "We want callers to know that 9-1-1 is about saving lives," said Public Safety Communications Assistant Director Karen Wong. "Excessive calls to 9-1-1 for non-emergencies can tie up the phone lines, slow response times, an can make the difference between life and death. The purpose of the California 9-1-1 Branch Education and Awareness Pilot Program is to educate the public on the use of 9-1-1 and about what constitutes a real emergency. This could help to reduce the number of non-emergency calls."

Most 911 Cell Phones Calls made in Copper are routed through Stockton CHP dispatch

According to Chief Kovacs of Copperopolis Fire Protection District all 911 calls made in Copperopolis are routed through the Stockton CHP dispatch center. From there the calls are routed to the Calaveras County Sheriff Dept PSAP (public safety answering point). From there the calls are dispatched to proper emergency channels. Fire calls dispatch to CalFire ECC (emergency command center) and ambulance calls are dispatched through the PSAP.

Kovacs stated that depending on the call volume the incoming 911 call may be received and heard at the same time by both PSAP and CalFire ECC increasing the speed with which emergency response crews are toned out.
