Its that time of year - Tarantula time!

This little guy was spotted in town on 9-6-12.
Autumn is commonly reffered to as the mating season for tarantula's as male tarantula's can wander tens of miles in search of a mate. Once a suitable mate has been found he must engage his mating hooks to restrain the fangs of the female. After mating is complete he releases his mating hooks and hopes to make a quick get-away.
Tarantulas are burrowers that live in burrows in the ground up to 3 1/2 feet deep, allowing them protection from the elements hence allowing them to live in many different climates. They mainly feed at night and gather water from early morning dew.
Despite their somewhat threatening appearance no tarantula has been known to have a bite that is deadly to humans.
