CFPD facing more possible budget cuts

At the CFPD (Copperopolis Fire Protection District) Board meeting March 8, 2012 Chief Milar expressed concern over the next fiscal years budget with regards to loss of revenue. Adjusting for a possible 6% cut in revenue Chief Milar said he anticipates the outcome to be negative and the possibility of laying off one employee a reality.

Board member Jerry Andress pointed out that since 2009 the district has seen a $300,000 drop in revenue.

Taking a proactive stance Milar has applied for multiple grants. One grant could possibly fund up to four firefighting positions, the grant is specifically for departments that lost positions due to an unstable economy. Another grant would purchase supplies, such as fire fighting equipment, gloves, cylinders, etc.

Milar's current goal, with the newly formed intern program, is to have paid staff at each station 24/7 and one intern on duty. There has been interest in expanding the intern program, yet there are rules and protocol that need to be followed for implementation of a larger program.
