Tom Tryon - District 4 Supervisor Candidate/Incumbant Interview

Tom Tryon has served on the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors for 28 years as a District 4 representative. Though he has seen the district lines change throughout his tenure it has not changed as "significantly" as the most recent redistricting which placed Copperopolis in District 4. Tryon stated that he "has always been an advocate for a corridor 4" coordination.

Graduating from UC Berkeley at the height of the Vietnam War, Tryon was active in the ROTC while in school and went on to join the Army and became stationed in Ft Bliss Texas working with Army Air Defense Hawk Missiles. While never deployed overseas, he is honored to have served his country. Receiving an MBA from University of Chicago he entered the banking industry quickly finding his niche in agricultural lending. Falling in love brought him to the foothills and into the family ranching business.

If Tryon were to be re-elected his "first order of business is the creation of a Copperopolis Community Plan" to be followed by "an effective General Plan." For the Copperopolis Community Plan he hopes "to shrink the boundaries" have a "more organized plan...not open for business for a population of 45,000. My issue is to emphasize infrastructure and more viable agriculture." (The current Copperopolis Community Plan, penned in 2009, includes the area of Diamond XX to O'Byrnes Ferry Bridge and along the ridge line behind Saddle Creek to the shore of New Melones.

Realizing the diversity that exists within Copperopolis Tryon is adamant that all people of the community should have a right to the expectation of "good schools, roads without potholes, 911 response, and toilets that flush" clarifying the basic necessity and right to expect water. He feels that within the community "individuals have a vision and that together their vision can become a reality." Also stating that a community should be "economically balanced, not motivated" that the theory behind economic balance would be to not have separate communities within a community but to bring the community together.

His final statement was that for a positive future for Copperopolis he feels that there is a need "to put good policies in place, it is an important starting point for positive growth."
