SRT Spitfire Grill to open 10-4-13

New musical serves up a heartwarming story of second chances

When Percy Talbot steps off the bus in tiny Gilead, Wisconsin, she’s a young woman with a single wish. After five years in prison, she’s determined to leave her troubled youth behind her and make a new home in this faded small town she knows only from a picture in a travel book. She lands a job at the local café, settles in and, just by being herself, brings her neighbors a long-needed lift.

            That’s the engaging setting for Sierra Rep’s production of The Spitifre Grill, a new musical that has won raves from coast to coast as a soulful story of second chances. It plays October 4-27 at the East Sonora stage.

            SRT Artistic Director Scott Viets is directing the show and is looking forward to bringing it to local audiences.

A dinner and entertainment fundraiser will be held for the wife and two daughters of Stephen Lee Olmsted of Sonora who passed away on Sunday, August 25^th after a mountain biking accident in Mammoth on August 24^th.  Steve is survived by his wife, Sarah Olmsted (Smith) - who grew up in Arnold and attended Hazel Fischer Elementary and Bret Harte High School.  They have two beautiful daughters Estella (5) and Aurora (3).  Funds will be raised to help Sarah and her daughters through this difficult time.

“DROP THE DRUGS” DAY IN CALAVERAS COUNTY

(San Andreas, CA) Calaveras County citizens can prevent prescription and other drug misuse and abuse by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted drugs on October 26th, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three locations in the county. A “Drop the Drugs” event is being presented by Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention. The service is free and anonymous; no questions asked.

Tulloch 2013-2014 schedule, as received from the Bureau of Reclamation.  Please keep in mind that the schedule is subject to change by the Bureau in the event of storm or rain event, or other unforeseen event.  Homeowners and other users of the reservoir are advised to secure all facilities as necessary, and to exercise care when operating within the reservoir.  
The Fall/Winter 2013-2014 drawdown schedule for Tulloch Reservoir is shown below.   This schedule complies with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control requirements.    The reservoir will generally be managed to the target elevation ranges, but some variation may occur due to large natural inflows or facility and operational constraints.

Public Notice

The Board of Directors will hold a public hearing as part of a Special Board of Directors meeting on 9/26/13, at 6:30 p.m. at 370 Main Street, Copperopolis, for the purpose of adopting the 2013-2014 final budget. Interested persons may appear and be heard regarding any item in the budget. The proposed budget will be available for inspection during the regular business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. beginning Friday, 9/13/2013 through Thursday 9/26/2013 at CFPD Station #1, .

                                            

At the same regularly scheduled meeting, the CFPD Board of Directors will set up and adopt the 2013-2014 Appropriations Limit pursuant to Section 7910 of the Government Code.  Interested persons may also be heard regarding the setting of the 2013-2014 Appropriations Limit.

Sheriff Dept press release re: Sketch of Veteran’s Field Attempted Abduction Suspect Released

(Valley Springs, CA) On September 11, 2013 at 4:45 pm, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Veteran’s Field playground in Valley Springs behind Valley Springs Elementary School for a report of an attempted abduction of a 14 year old girl. During the course of the on-going investigation, and with the assistance of the victim, Detectives obtained a sketch of the alleged suspect.

Shutdown would delay military pay once again - Politico.com

The armed forces and their families are once again facing the possibility of delayed paychecks.
If Congress and the White House can’t reach a spending deal by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, members of the military would be expected to work during the shutdown, but would not get paid until the issues are resolved.

“You will be paid, just not on time,” said John Cooney, who served as deputy general counsel in the Reagan White House Office of Management and Budget.

Military pay often becomes a political football as budget negotiations go down to the wire because it provides each side with accusations they can use against each other, Cooney said. “It’s part of the rhetoric to influence the public. Each side accuses the other of harming the military and national security.”

Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest

WANTED – 9^th Grade to 12^th Grade Students   

The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution is once again joining efforts with the National Italian American Foundation to sponsor a national essay contest on Christopher Columbus. The contest is open to all students in grades 9 through 12 in public, private or parochial schools or those who are home schooled. This contest is conducted without regard to race, sex or national origin. There are monetary prizes for our local Chapter’s winning essay as well as first, second and third places should the student’s work progress through the steps to the national level. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see an Amador or Calaveras County student reach such heights?

The 2013-2014 essay contest asks the student to write an 800 to 1200 word essay entitled:

 “How Do Americans View Christopher Columbus and George Washington Today?”
