Injured Firefighter Listed in Stable Condition

 

Firefighter Nathan Fyock, who was struck by a civilian motorist last night while engaged in firefighting operations, underwent surgery overnight after he suffered major injuries from the accident. Fyock continues to receive treatment at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto and this morning is in good spirits.

CFPD Strike Team cancelled at 9 am 7-26-12

Copperopolis Fire Protection District was asked to form a leg of a 5 engine strike team last night, 7-25-12, in response to the overwhelming need for fire suppression at the Penn fire in Murphys. The strike team was cancelled at 9 am 7-26-12.

Resources throughout the county are slim at this point and reducing the number of engines available to SRA areas, such as Copper, have to be taken into consideration prior to depleting resources even more.

CalFire Personnel Reductions in '11 Affecting Fire Supression in '12

In July of  2011 CalFire reduced the manpower on their engines from four firefighters to three. In addition they cancelled their exclusive contract with a DC-10 air tanker retrofitted for retardant drops.

The US Forest Service has also seen a reduction in air tankers, from a fleet of 44 in '02 to only 11 'exclusive use' contracts in '12. While air tankers are used for dropping retardant on federal lands, research has shown that half of the retardant dropped in the US is dropped in California.

Numbers of orders for air tankers unfilled increased in 2011 approximately 28% as the rate of available tankers decreased.

In addition the Air Attack base in Fresno was closed effective July 1, 2012.

Following on the heels of the deep cuts,  property owners in SRA areas will be seeing a tax bill for fire services in the mail as early as the first week of August 2012.

Fire Burns Near Murphys

San Andreas – Firefighters continue to battle the Penn Fire, burning near Pennsylvania Gulch and Skunk Ranch Road just east of Murphy’s in Calaveras County, which is now reported at 200 acres and 15% contained.  Over 200 firefighters from CAL FIRE and surrounding fire agencies are currently fighting the fire.  Firefighters will continue to work throughout the night to contain the fire.  The Penn Fire was reported at 3:24 p.m. this afternoon.

Modesto Chevron Protest

Declining to serve military personnel was the crux behind the protest today at the Chevron station at the corner of Sisk and Palendale in Modesto, CA.

On 7-23-12 an off duty Paramedic and Air Force reservist walked to the counter at the Chevron station with his purchase. When he pulled out his wallet his military id was exposed to the cashier. According to statements made by friends of veteran, the cashier - of Middle Eastern descent - told him that he would not serve his kind and that he believes that our people (US Military) should leave his country.

This sparked a facebook plea to all who support our military to boycott and protest the Chevron station.

At approximately 6 pm 7-25-12 Copper Fire was toned out to have a strike at the ready. According to Duty Officer Jim Toy Engine 237 with Engineer Nick Maness, and firefighters Ricky Molina and Anthony Sterat are on stand by awaiting orders for strike team assignment.

Recent Travels of a Country Girl by, Charity Maness

As we all know, living in the country has it own set of challenges when attempting travel outside of say...the county. However, on this trip I am destined for Boulder Colorado, home of the free loving, tree loving and 'legalize it' crowd! I have packed my tevas and my tye dye and I am ready to go.

A peaceful 2 1/2 hour drive to SFO ( a quick Starbucks stop along the way), most assuredly the last possible spot to park in long term parking (out in the gravel and dust), a short bus hop to the airport and I have arrived at SFO Int'l. Being the ever vigilant traveler I have my less-than-three-ounce-liquids all in a zip lock bag, my laptop at the ready for its own plastic xray box and as little clothing as possible on so as not to tie up the line when stripping off a deadly belt or killer stiletto heels. Slip the sling backs off and I'm good to go.

Not so fast. Apparently my itty bitty dress with absolutely no embellishments that left little to the imagination - not that imagination is needed after the whole body scan was complete - set off some alarm. Icky pat down in places better left unsaid by a woman that even my beefiest son would have a hard time taking down and I was cleared, with plenty of time to spare. Time to people watch.

Copper Canyon Baptist Church - reaching more people through technology

Sean Paulson, pastor of Copper Canyon Baptisit Church, seems to be everywhere in town where there is a need. Working with the youth through vacation bible school, after school kids camp and Sunday school. Holding youth groups for jr high, high school and college aged youth as well as bible studies for men and women. Reaching out to the community he also helps with the food pantry and most any other community organization that is in need of help.

CHP Parking Ticket Quota a fallacy

Becky Myers of the San Andreas CHP office stated that the CHP in Calaveras County receives no monetary compensation for parking ticket citations given by the CHP within Calaveras County, so quota's would be a mute point.

All parking tickets written by the CHP throughout the entire county are written on citations titled 'Angels Camp Parking Enforcement.' According to office personnel at the Angels Camp Police Department, they receive all the funds from the Angels Camp Parking Enforement citations written by CHP yet turn all funds over to Angels Camp City Hall for distribution.

Gov Brown signs veteran health advocate legislation

On July 24. 2012 Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill 1869 which will require the Office of Patient Advocate - who represent individuals served by health care service plans regulated by the Department of Management Health Care, insureds covered by health insurers regulated by the Department of Insurance, and individuals who receive or are eligible for other health care coverage in California - to provide and assist in the provision of outreach and education about federal veterans health.

This bill will take effect January 1, 2013.

SHeriff Dept press release re:Altercation at Red Brick Saloon Results in Serious Injuries

(San Andreas, CA) On July 20, 2012 at approximately 11:30 PM Calaveras Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the Red Brick Saloon, San Andreas, for a report of a physical altercation with injuries. Upon arrival the deputies contacted the victim, Scott Anderson (47) of San Andreas. Mr. Anderson was the victim of an alleged unprovoked attack from Suspect Caleb Terry (23) of Valley Springs. According to statements obtained at the scene, Mr. Anderson was standing on the sidewalk outside the saloon when Suspect Terry abruptly threw a rock at Mr. Anderson from a short distance away, striking him in the face. Mr. Anderson suffered serious injuries to the lower portion of his face. He was transported to Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital where he obtained treatment for his injuries, and was later released.

Skillbuilder workshops – learning through doing and reviewing

Skillbuilder Workshops, brain child of education/literacy advocate Maggie Rollings, is in its second summer at Copperopolis Branch Library. The workshop follows different ‘menus’ and approaches to learning, covering seemingly each possible learning avenue for a child. 

At the 7-19-12 Skillbuilder workshop the children were read a book with a moral based on the negative consequences of cheating. To reinforce the moral the children were then split into groups of their choice to create and perform a puppet show. The groups consisted of: actors, stage/set designers, puppet makers, and marquis creators. Each child chose their group and scampered off to create with a flourish.

Maria Muldaur to perform at Twisted Oak

On July 27, 2012 at 7 pm enjoy an evening under the stars at Twisted Oak Winery's concert under the stars with Maria Muldaur.

Maria Muldaur is best known world wide for her '74 mega-hit "Midnight at the Oasis," which received several Grammy nominations, and enshrined her forever in the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere; but despite her considerable Pop Music success, her 39-year career could best be described as a long and adventurous odyssey through the various forms of American Roots Music. Youth Missionaries volunteering in Copper

Three youth missionaries from Georgia, hosted by the Copper Canyon Baptist Church, have been seen throughout town supporting many events from vacation bible school to skill builder workshops at the library.

Meredith, with a major in Math, is “loving” the interaction with the youth of community, the learning and the fun activities.

20 year old Kayla was “thrilled” to be volunteering at the weekly skill builders workshops at the library. With a major in child development her love of children was rewarded with each completed project in the workshop.

Chase, 23 year old English major, carefully and eloquently chose his words to define his experience in Copper. “It will leave a lasting impression that will go far beyond the summer.”

5 year Draw Down on Lake Tulloch

According to Tri Dam License Compliance Coordinator, Susan Larson, "Tri-Dam anticipates that the reservoir will be drawn down to the 5-year levels, so that the gates at the dam can be fully exercised (opened and closed) and inspected, as required."

This insepction process is something that needs to be accomplished at approximate five year intervals. The draw down is anticipated to occur in January/February. According to Susan "as soon as Tri-Dam receives the approved draw-down schedule from the Bureau of Reclamation, we are planning to send it out to as wide a notification list as possible."

The Copper Gazette will also notify residents of Copper as soon as notification is released.

Vietnam Veteran walking to help wounded veterans receives thanks from Commandant of the USMC

On July 12, 2012 Vietnam Veteran Ric Ryan, known as the walking man of Murphys, received an email from General James F. Amos, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps thanking him for his work in supporting Operation Mend.

The email read:
"Hey Ric...Gen Jim Amos, Commandant here, just wanted you to know that you are motivating all of your fellow Marines back here in the Pentagon!!! Thanks for your continued fidelity to our wounded. God bless you.
If you ever get back to DC then let me know!!!"

To date Ric Ryan has raised $10,531 for Operation Mend.  'Operation Mend combines the best of the military's resources with the skills of UCLA Health System for a comprehensive and collaborative approach to healing United States military personnel wounded and disfigured in Iraq and Afghanistan.'

"I feel the more people that know about Operation Mend and the more news stations that know about what Operation Mend does, just maybe, we as a nation can help our service men and women live normal lives and get the best help there is and I feel Operation Mend is the best there is. Sex Offender Arrested for Violation of State Parole Conditions

(Railroad Flat, CA) On July 19, 2012 at approx. 2:40 PM, Calaveras Sheriff’s Deputies located and arrested Parolee Rylan Luckey (26) of Railroad Flat, at the Railroad Flat General Store. Parolee Luckey had an active arrest warrant (3056 of the Penal Code) for violating his state parole conditions. Parolee Luckey failed to register as a sex offender as required by California Penal Code 290.012. The arrest went without incident. He was booked into the Calaveras County Jail.

Tuol and Cal County Sheriffs Voice Concerns on Motehrlode Views this weekend

Local Sheriff's will talk about the potential impacts of reducing public safety services.
Tuolumne County Sheriff Jim Mele and Calaveras County Sheriff Gary Kuntz will be the guests on Mother Lode Views this weekend. Both Sheriffs have been very vocal at recent Supervisors meetings, giving their opinions on why they feel additional deputies are needed in the Mother Lode.

County Counsel weighs in on BUMP

While emails continue to flood the Copper Gazette regarding the upcoming BUMP VI at the Lake Tulloch Resort the question posed to County Counsel was this:
Will the County be requiring a conditional use permit for the upcoming August 18, 2012 BUMP VI party at Lake Tulloch?
Janis Elliot, Calaveras County Counsel responded:
"It is my understanding that the Resort has been advised of the relevant Title 17 sections but has taken no action to comply.  The Board has authorized County Counsel to review the facts and this office will then make a decision on the appropriate enforcement actions, which may or may not occur prior to August 18, 2012."

Please watch for motorcycles on the road this weekend

In years past the Truckin' for Hospice Bike run has brought through Copper up to 500 motorcycles all with one mission in mind...to raise money for Hospice of San Joaquin and Community Hospice.

The riders will stop in Copper at the Old Corner Saloon for lunch and a bit of a break. Please keep you eyes open for motorcycles on the road, look twice and share the road.
