BUMP V has arrived

Please use caution when driving past Poker Flat and Lake Tulloch Resort as parking for the BUMP V along the roadway has begun. Copper Cab is running fast for local transportation, call 785-7433. Additional caution should be used on the lake today as the boat population has increased greatly.

The event has tight security and a heavy law enforcement presence both on and off the lake.

Gearing up for the BUMP V party at the resort

Each year the Lake Tulloch Resort hosts a summertime party titled the BUMP. This year marks the fifth annual BUMP party. The party begins at 12 noon on the 23rd and runs to 2 am the 24th. Advertised as an all age event the event brings in people and boats from all over the valley and the foothills. It also brings in money that the resort reportedly needs to meet operating costs. Each year extra personnel are put on staff at the Sheriff Department and the Copperopolis Fire Department for this event.

Book review - 'A Hard Ride' by, Dennis Dooley

While many of us have heard tales of the movement west in the early 1900's, the hard work, the tough lifestyle, yet, we rarely get a glimpse into the real life of those who lived it.

When local author Dennis Dooley's father passed away, the duty of clearing out his father Dick's desk fell upon him. Though he had seen him scribbling this and that over the years Dooley was completely surprised at the volume of written work left behind from his father, poems on napkins, memories written on scraps of paper, and a few sacred pictures tucked in the back for good measure. Sorting through the massive amount of loose paperwork, Dooley knew he had to organize his fathers words into a book. The journey was a long one but allowed Dooley to once again worship his father for the strong yet gentle man that he was. 'A Hard Ride' is Dick's story.

Hwy 4 Fires suspicious and under investigation

5 vegetation fires scorching over 100 acres have occurred along the Hwy 4 corridor from Angels Camp to Copperopolis in the last 10 days; all but one remain under investigation.  
 

Baby born at Fire Station turns One

Little 1 year old Riley Marie Contreras brought her brithday cake to the CFPD station to celebrate her first birthday with one of the firefighters that brought her into the world, Keith Cantrell.

One year ago Riley's mother, Allison Contreras and her husband Richard were on the way to the hospital from Diamond XX when Allison knew she would not make it to the hospital. Richard stopped at the fire station waking a sleeping -then Chief- Keith Cantrell. Cantrell quickly notified CalFire paramedic Lisa Fender. Soon thereafter little Riley Marie was brought into the world, right there at CFPD station #1. Allison to this day states that it was an amazing day, both embarrassing because she knew most of the firefighters from working the deli booth at McCartys, but also moving as both Keith and Lisa made what could have been a dangerous and difficult situtaion safe and secure. "They are my daughter's heroes."
 

Combat Veteran Motorcycle run through Copper

The Combat Veteran Motorcycle Association (CVMA),a non-profit Association of Combat Veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who ride motorcycles as a hobby, will be stopping by the Sports Pub on Sunday at approximately noon for a bite to eat and to show their support for Copperopolis's newly formed VFW Post 12118. 

The CVMA mission is 'to support and defend those who have defended our country and our freedoms. Our focus is to help veteran care facilities provide a warm meal, clothing, shelter, and guidance, or simply to say "Thank You." and "Welcome Home."'

To Dine or Not to Dine

This weeks restaurant – Panini’s, Copperopolis

First I must point out the obvious attraction of Panini’s…location, location, location. No matter where you live in Copper Panini’s is just minutes away in the new Town Square. The second best attribute is the option for outside dining; fans in the summer, propane heaters in the winter. 

Now, on to the food. As per my usual MO (modus operandi) I tend to dine a few times at a restaurant before I can make an somewhat educated critique. This proved to be helpful for Panini’s…no so helpful for my waistline. When the weather was cooler I went through a soup phase, you know where the craving for soups won’t stop…much like my craving for tootsie rolls and hostess cherry pies with my pregnancies (hence the whale status at the ob gyn) I digress… when the weather was cool I visited at least once per week sampling each of their rich and creamy soups. Scrumptious! It was the soups that had me back for more.

Letter to the Editor - Be Wildlife Aware...Please - from, Charity Maness

When I moved to Copperopolis I tried to become aware of the issues both environmental and population based. I quickly learned that the parcel of land I was residing on belonged to the wildlife first, I was the trespasser. With this realization came my acceptance that at least once a year I would lose a new born goat (kid) or chicken to a coyote, raccoon, fox, hawk, owl, etc.  I also learned that I would need to share my garden with rodents or be proactive and put mesh down before I planted.  Why share my garden and not just put out mole poison? Well let me tell you...


In the past two years I have lost two family dogs to secondary poisoning.

Secondary poisoning is the poisoning of a domestic or or wild animal by ingestion of a poisoned animal. Which means when a neighbor one acre or more away chooses to poison moles, those moles - looking for a place to rehydrate and/or die - walk through their labyrinth of tunnels coming out, who knows where, to the surface, making easy pickin's for domestic animals and wildlife alike.

The death is painful, especially when an anticoagulant rodenticide (most common) is used, causing internal bleeding.

There is no fence that keeps these poisoned rodents out, no shot to protect your pet, and no guarantee that the vet can save your pets life once the poison is ingested. I beg of you to please be aware of the chemicals in and around your home, for the local wildlife and your own pets sake.

CFPD Volunteers graduate County Fire Academy

On the evening of June 16, 2012, four Copperopolis Fire Protection District Volunteers proudly graduated the 19 week long County Fire Academy. Chief Jeff Millar, along with incoming Chief Steve Kovacs, CFPD Board member Steve Marks, Firefighter Matt Moore, and many family and friends were present to watch as the graduates proudly received their well earned diplomas.

Upon successful completion of the Firefighter Academy the volunteers received training/certification in:

Haz-Mat First Responder Operational

Sheriff Dept press release re: Drowning Victim from Hogan Lake passed away

On 6-19-12 at about 7:15pm, Calaveras Sheriff received a report of a possible drowning victim in the Wrinkle Cove area of Hogan Lake in Valley Springs. The 20 year old male was already out of the water and CPR in progress by subjects on scene when first responders arrived. Isaias Zurita (20) of Valley Springs was taken by ambulance and later flown to UC Davis. This morning, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office informed the Sheriff that Zurita had passed away and next of kin had been notified. There are no other details available at this time regarding events that led up to the drowning.

Farmers Market in Copper

Beginning June 30 and running through August 30 a farmers market will be held every Saturday evening from 5 pm to dusk at the Copperopolis Nursery 318 Main Street.

Music in the Park with Coyote Hill in Town Square - smooth sounds

The opening of the much awaiting Calaveras Arts Council Music in the Park series began in Copperopolis on June 13, 2012 in Town Square featuring Coyote Hill. Coyote Hill performed a nice selection of Bluegrass, folk, country, and Americana music. Calling themselves the 'Mighty Coyotes' in jest they use a variety of instruments to create everything from smooth sounds to energetic music that makes you want to get up and dance. Including in their instrumental repertoire: fiddle, acoustic guitar, banjo, electric guitar, keyboard, mandolin, harmonica, and drums.

The evening was warm, as was the laughter and the friendship. It seemed as if this was the perfect Copperopolis evening to be shared with friends and surrounded with sweet music.

Summer Solstice - June 20, 2012

Summer begins in the Northern Hemisphere on June 20, 2012, at 7:09 P.M. (EDT).

Each year, the timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. This occurs annually on June 20 or June 21 in North America, depending on your time zone.
The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice).

Multiple Vegetation Fires in Copper

At approximately 11:15 am 6-19-12 a vegetation fire was reported at 2750 Pommel in Diamond XX, within minutes another vegetation fire was reported in the 8000 block of Riata Way a in Circle XX.

By 3:16 pm the Pommel Way fire was in mop up with a possible 5-10 acre burn. Cause of fire is still under investigation.

Also within the mop up time frame for Pommel, the Riata Way fire entered mop up stage with a total of approximately 1.5 acres burned. Cause of fire still under investigation.

New Melones fishing report from Glory Hole Sports 6-18-12

Water Conditions:  New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,788,937 acre-feet of water. The lake level has dropped three feet this week and is currently at 1032 ft. above sea level and 56 ft. from full.  Water temperature is in the mid-70's, and climbing.  Lake is slightly stained, with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days.

Comedy night at the pub - grins and giggles

Once again the Sports Pub brought laughter to Copperopolis in the form of comedians coming from as far away as Vallejo and Sacramento. Of course none of them could resist poking fun at the remoteness of our town, some expressing concern about the law enforcement and the likelihood of them returning to their hometowns in tact.

The third Friday of each month the Sports Pub brings live comedy to Copper through stand-up comedy promoter Del Van Dyke, a righteous comedian in his own right. Del carefully selects comedians that he thinks will tickle our funny bones and hopefully entertain us with their humor.

Gentry assumes CCWD interim manager position

According to Dennis Dooley, CCWD representative for Copperopolis,  as of 6-18-12 "CCWD is without a General Manager as Joone has taken another General Manager position in Southern California where she and her family really wish to be.   She has brought stability and organization to CCWD that has been missing for too long.   She also was a very good spokesperson for the Bay-Delta and state water issues for the Mother Lode in General and Calaveras County in particular.   She will be hard to replace for this purpose.   It is my goal to find someone who will be able to cut through the "process" and get results.   I will try to keep you up on situations that I think will be of interest to Copperopolis and Copper Gazette readers.

Sonora PD Press Release re:fake bomb at courthouse arrest

28 Nov. 2011, at approx. 9:05 am, the Sonora Police Department was advised of a possible bomb located just outside the north door (Yaney Ave. entrance) of the Tuolumne County Courthouse.
The item was located in a canvas bag and consisted of three red cylinder type objects that were taped together. There was a wire running from the cylinders to a black box, which was also attached to the cylinders.

SACRAMENTO – In an effort to protect public safety by reducing the use of toxic flame retardants, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today directed state agencies to revise flammability standards for upholstered furniture sold in the state.

Sheriff Dept Press releases re:Subject arrested near Railroad Flat after attempting to flee from Deputies on a motorcycle and crashing

On Monday night, 6-18-12 at about 8:15pm, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on an OHV motorcycle (“dirt bike”) on Railroad Flat Road. The motorcycle failed to yield to the marked Sheriff’s vehicles’ lights and sirens and sped away at a high rate of speed crossing the double yellow lines.

Sheriff Dept press release re: probation/parole compliance checks yield arrests in Valley Springs

On Friday 6-15-12, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Deputies along with CDCR parole officers conducted probation and parole compliance checks in the Valley Springs and Burson areas. Several subjects contacted were found to be in compliance with the terms of either their probation or parole conditions and needed no further action.

Sheriff Dept press release re: man arrested for burglary and resisting arrest San Andreas

On Sunday 6-17-12 at about 4:30pm, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the Treats General Store in San Andreas for a report of an intoxicated male who was suspected of shoplifting alcohol and fleeing in a vehicle. Deputies were provided a description of the suspect, license plate number, and description of the vehicle.

Gov Brown appointments - 39th ag district

Gay Callan, 62, of San Andreas, has been appointed to the 39th District Agricultural Association, Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, where she has served since 1991. Callan has been owner of Chatom Vineyards and Winery since 1978. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no compensation. Callan is a Republican.

On June 16, 2012 Governor Brown issued a proclamation proclaiming June 16, 2012 as "Juneteenth." The following day he issued a proclamation proclaiming June16 and 17, 2012 as "Let's Move California! Weekend."

Copper Parks and Rec Kids Camp - where fun and games = learning and friendship

This years Copper Parks and Rec Kids Camp saw an increase in registered children with a total of 63 Copper kids playing, learning and just being kids.

The week long camp, run from 9-12 at Blackcreek Park, included activities such as archery, hide and seek, 'lizard and snake' hunt (wooden lizards and snakes), nature hikes, water toss, team ball games and more. Each game came with a series of instruction and skills that were learned.

The camp children ranging in age from 6-12 were split into 4 groups where the first thing they were able to do was pick their own group name. There were the Anacondas, the Black and orange tigers, the Pythons, and the Ocelots. 14 volunteer camp counselors age 14 years and up helped camp coordinator Tim Reed with the events and running of the games. (In the months prior to the camp, the counselors also spent endless hours washing cars to raise funds for the kids camp.)

What does the Copper VFW have to offer you?

On June 13, 2012 that was just what VFW Post 12118 Commander Al Gilbert was telling folks about, just what the VFW can do for them.

Commander Gilbert was at the Copperopolis Umpqua Bank handing out literature and answering questions, both about the VFW and about veterans interests. The VFW benefits are far reaching beginning locally with a solid group of veterans that have served during combat, allowing them the opportunity to be among others who have an idea of what they themselves have experienced. This group is involved in community events and functions and strives to be a strong community presence.

The benefits then reach beyond the community to include discounts from service providers and a representative to the district to help deal with VA red-tape.
