On
Sunday, 01/13/13, at approximately 12:07 PM, an officer from the Angels
Camp Police Department responded to a reported non-injury traffic
collision near the intersection of SR 49 and SR 4. Upon arrival the
officer spoke with the involved parties and found that one of the two
drivers involved was complaining of minor pain to her neck and back
after being rear-ended by the other vehicle involved. The second person
involved, Joshua J. Fernandes, a 26 year-old Angels Camp resident,
initially told the officer that he was not suffering from any pain or
injuries.
During
the course of speaking with Fernandes the officer determined that he
displayed symptoms associated with being under the influence of
narcotics. The officer conducted an investigation and Fernandes was
subsequently arrested for suspicion of driving a motor vehicle while
under the influence of drugs.
Subsequent
to being placed in handcuffs Fernandes became hostile and combative and
he turned toward the officer several times, intentionally stepping on
the officer’s feet and spitting on the officer. Fernandes also
intentionally slammed his head into the hood of the patrol car, denting
the hood of the patrol car.
Fernandes
was transported to Mark Twain Medical Center for a blood draw and for a
medical clearance prior to being booked into jail, and he is facing
criminal charges related to Driving Under the Influence, Assault and
Battery on a Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Vandalism.
