Update on Counterfeit Money in Copperopolis

According Sheriff PIO Chris Hewitt, Copperopolis was the only town within Calaveras County to recieve counterfeit money.

It was reported that Lake Tulloch Resort received $660.00 in counterfeit $20.00 dollar bills. According to the police report the money from the Resort was reported on Monday June 25, 2012 two days after the BUMP V event. Hewitt stated that the report said in part, that the money looked to be printed on fake paper, washed, and had an odd green tint.

In addition to the counterfeit $20.00's received was a report of a modified $5.00 bill passed at the Copperopolis Shell station. The $5.00 had reportedly been modified to appear as a $100.00 bill.

Hewitt impressed that businesses can protect themselves with the use of a counterfiet detector pen. Though he pointed out that the pen may have not worked on the altered $5.00 bill.

The money will be turned over to the Secret Service, as their 'sole purpose is to suppress counterfeiting of US currency.'
