On July 1, 2012 at 00:41 a.m., Deputies responded to a disturbance call
on Pelican Place in Valley Springs. Upon arrival, a Deputy Sheriff
noticed a subject with a gun. The subject pointed the gun toward the
Deputy Sheriff. The Deputy Sheriff fired at the suspect. Suspect was
not hit.
A third subject, who had been witness to the incident, disarmed the
suspect and the suspect was taken into custody by the Sheriff’s
Department. The suspect was arrested and booked into Calaveras County
Jail.
The Deputy Sheriff received some minor ear injuries due to shooting
from a closed confined space (inside of his patrol vehicle). The Deputy
was then transported to Mark Twain Hospital and later released.
The Sheriff Deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard policy.
A shot gun was recovered at the scene; this is the same gun the suspect pointed at the Sheriff Deputy.
The District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office are handling
the investigation in accordance with policies and procedures.
