On Tuesday July 12, 2011, the Riverside County Board of Supervisors will consider Supervisor/Temecula pharmacist Jeff Stone's proposal to host a statewide summit for city and county leaders to draft a framework for secession, thereby creating a new state with 13 conservative counties, totaling 13 million people, to be called "South California."
Facing "dismal economic times" Stone claims has brought many supporters of this effort. Stating that California is "ungovernable" and pointing to Sacramento's "pillaging" of local governments, Stone is undaunted by the many previous failed attempts at creating two separate states.
Spokesman Gil Duran was quoted, responding to the effort, saying, "If you want to live in a Republican state with very conservative right-wing laws, then there's a place called Arizona." Stressing that Riverside County should be concentrating on closing the expected $130 million revenue shortfall projected for the next budget year.
The counties named are Riverside, Fresno, Imperial, INyo, Kern, Madera, Mariposa, Orange, San Bernardino, San Diego and Tulare.
Stone has said that he is not opposed to adding other interested counties.
